Grocery Store Flat Roof: Liquid-Applied Waterproofing and Walkways

A grocery store's large flat roof was waterproofed with a liquid-applied system laid over the existing roof, and textured walkway routes were added to the rooftop equipment.

The roof

The store’s flat roof is large and busy. Rooftop mechanical units, pipe and cable runs on supports, and edge guardrails cover much of the surface, and maintenance staff and contractors need regular access to the equipment. Every support and upstand is a detail the waterproofing has to seal.

What was installed

A liquid-applied waterproofing system was laid over the existing roof surface as an overlay, so the old roof stayed in place as the base. The liquid membrane was carried around the equipment supports and up the upstands, forming one continuous waterproof layer without seams.

Walkway routes with a textured, contrasting finish were then laid on top of the membrane, marking the paths that people use to reach the rooftop equipment.

Why liquid-applied suits a roof like this

On a roof with many supports, pipes and upstands, a liquid membrane can be worked around each detail as part of the same coat, instead of cutting and welding a separate flashing for every one. An overlay also avoids stripping the roof above an open store, which keeps noise, debris and the risk of leaks during the work to a minimum. See liquid-applied roofing and flat roof waterproofing.

Why walkways matter

Foot traffic is one of the main causes of wear and damage on flat roofs. Marked walkways keep people on protected routes, take the wear off the waterproofing, and show anyone on the roof the safe way to the equipment, away from the edges.

Keeping the roof in service

A liquid-applied roof can be maintained with the same system it was built from. Worn or damaged areas are cleaned and recoated, and supports or penetrations added later are sealed with the same liquid membrane. Keeping foot traffic on the walkways, and checking the details around the equipment after any rooftop work, are the simplest ways to extend its life.

UK refurbishment experience, a Texas office

Refurbishment specialists

Our business grew through roof and cladding refurbishment in the UK. That experience shapes the work we now offer from our Texas office.

Repair what can be retained

We investigate the roof problem and explain what can be repaired, restored or replaced, so you can decide how to invest in the building.

Roofing and cladding together

We can coordinate roof, insulation, wall panel and drainage work, including the connections where separate repairs can leave problems behind.

A plan for your working building

We agree access, work areas and protection with your site team, including any restrictions needed while the roof is opened.
