Product overview

EQUITONE tectiva is a high-density, through-colored fiber cement panel with no coating. The color runs throughout the panel, and the face is the bare, hydrophobated fiber cement surface.

The panel has natural color variations and hues. Light or dark inclusions, and the production process itself, can accentuate the natural character. The orientation of the panel, the viewing angle, and the effects of light and moisture all change how the variation reads on a facade.

The surface has fine sanding lines in the longitudinal direction. The panels are not directional and may be installed in any direction. tectiva has been made water-repellent by hydrophobation.

tectiva is one of three uncoated autoclaved EQUITONE panels, with lunara and linea. It is used as rainscreen cladding on ventilated facades and in the other applications listed below.

Color

Every tectiva panel has its own individual character, and random hues are part of the material. Color is chosen from samples, since literature cannot show the available colors realistically.

Color differences are measured with a simplified CIELAB model that follows only the lightness parameter. The tolerated color difference on a dry facade is ΔL* = ±2.5. Tolerance is measured on dry surfaces only.

tectiva can be combined with lunara and linea in the same color.

Composition and production

tectiva panels consist of cement, quartz sand, cellulose, natural calcium silicate, inorganic color pigments, water and additives.

The material is a highly compressed, autoclaved fiber cement manufactured in Belgium. In the Hatschek process, a slurry of cement, sand, cellulose, pigments and water is pumped into vats with rotating cylindrical sieves. A film of fiber cement forms on each sieve and is carried by a felt belt to a forming drum. Several layers are collected and squeezed together until the thickness is reached. An automatic knife cuts the fresh sheet, and the sheets are stacked with interleaving steel plates and highly compressed.

The panels then cure in an autoclave under high temperature and pressure. After curing they receive their final finish, and finally a hydrophobation that makes them water-repellent.

Thickness, sizes and weights

tectiva has a standard thickness of 5/16 inch (8 mm) and a 3/8 inch (10 mm) thickness for specific applications or fixings. It is supplied untrimmed (production dimension) or trimmed (maximum usable size).

  • Trimmed width is 48 inches (1220 mm), and untrimmed width is 48 3/4 inches (1240 mm).
  • Trimmed lengths are 98 or 120 inches (2500 or 3050 mm). Untrimmed lengths are 99 or 121 inches (2520 or 3070 mm).
  • Nominal weight per area is 3.05 pounds per square foot at 5/16 inch and 3.8 pounds per square foot at 3/8 inch (14.9 and 18.6 kg/m²).
  • At 5/16 inch the panels weigh 100 and 122 pounds trimmed and 103 and 125 pounds untrimmed (45.4, 55.4, 46.6 and 56.7 kg).
  • At 3/8 inch the panels weigh 125 and 153 pounds trimmed and 128 and 156 pounds untrimmed (56.7, 69.2, 58.1 and 70.8 kg).
  • A pallet holds 40 panels at 5/16 inch and 30 panels at 3/8 inch.
  • Usable surface per pallet is 1313.2 and 1601.7 square feet at 5/16 inch, and 984.9 and 1201.3 square feet at 3/8 inch (122.0 and 148.8 m², and 91.5 and 111.6 m²).

tectiva must not be installed with untrimmed edges. About 3/8 inch (10 mm) is trimmed from each raw edge.

Trimmed-panel tolerances are -1/32 inch to +1/16 inch on thickness, ±1/8 inch on width and length, and ±1/16 inch per foot on squareness. In metric these are -0.5 mm to +0.8 mm at 8 mm and -0.5 mm to +1.0 mm at 10 mm, ±3 mm on width and length, and ±1.0 mm/m on squareness. Untrimmed panels are held to ±3/16 inch (±5 mm) on width and length and ±2.0 mm/m on squareness in metric. The factory tolerances outperform EN 12467 Level I and Level II and all criteria in ASTM C1185.

ASTM properties and fire data

tectiva is an ASTM E84 Class A material with a flame spread index of 0 and a smoke development index of 5. The ASTM E119 assembly fire resistance rating is 1 hour, the assembly hose stream test is a pass, and the ASTM E136 vertical tube furnace test gives a pass with a non-combustible result.

  • Flexural strength classification: Grade IV under ASTM C1186, with trimmed-panel dimensional tolerances passing.
  • Dry mean density: 101.0 pounds per cubic foot.
  • The tectiva moisture movement is 0.02 percent across 30 to 90 percent humidity.
  • Reaches an ultimate flexural strength of 4,475 psi dry and 3,886 psi wet.
  • Passes the water tightness, frost resistance (freeze-thaw) and warm water resistance tests.
  • Moisture content is 5.9 percent, and mean water absorption is 19 percent.
  • Thermal movement is 5.5e-6 in/in°F, and thermal conductivity is 0.226 BTU/h ft°F to ASTM C518.

The panels are evaluated to ICC acceptance criteria AC90 and meet the minimum requirements of the International Building Code. EQUITONE autoclaved products carry ESR report ESR 3910 to ICC AC90.

Working with the material

tectiva is uncoated, and cut edges do not need to be sealed. Minor scratches or stains can be sanded off. No adhesive, tape or sealant goes on the finished surface.

The panel is hail impact tested. Cleaning follows the EQUITONE Cleaning Information guide.

Machining releases dust that can irritate the airways and eyes. Dust extraction, ventilation or both is used, because fine quartz-containing dust inhaled in high concentrations or over long periods can lead to lung disease and an increased risk of lung cancer.

Applications and limits

tectiva is used in ventilated applications, including but not limited to:

  • Ventilated facade or rainscreen cladding.
  • Window and door reveals.
  • Exterior ceilings, as decorative ceiling cladding.
  • Soffits, eaves and verge boards.
  • Interior wall and ceiling lining.

Panels are fixed on the face or concealed, with Etex proprietary or recommended solutions. Restrictions are in the specific application guidelines.

tectiva is not used in roof applications, in interior areas exposed to direct moisture, in contact with standing snow or ice, or where it is exposed to long-term temperatures above 80°C (176°F).

Certification

The manufacturer presents a Declaration of Performance for tectiva under European Regulation 305/2011 (CPR), confirming CE marking. The panel has an Environmental Product Declaration under ISO 14025 or EN 15804, with an expected average reference service life of 50 years.

EQUITONE fiber cement facade materials hold a cradle-to-cradle bronze rating under C2CPII version 3.1. The factory holds ISO 9001, ISO 14001 and ISO 45001 certificates.
