Overview
Owens Corning
Owens Corning is a building-materials manufacturer with its world headquarters in Toledo, Ohio. The company describes its operations as four integrated businesses: Roofing, Insulation, Doors and Composites. Its roofing business manufactures asphalt shingles at 17 manufacturing facilities in the United States, and the company has announced a new shingle plant in Prattville, Alabama, with a four-wide laminator.
The roofing site at owenscorning.com/en-us/roofing presents shingles and roof-system components for residential steep-slope roofs in the United States. The shingle collections relevant to the Technical Library are the Duration family, Oakridge, Woodmoor and Woodcrest.
The Duration family in the library includes TruDefinition Duration, TruDefinition Duration STORM and TruDefinition Duration FLEX. The Duration series is promoted with SureNail Technology. TruDefinition Duration FLEX uses a blend of SBS polymer-modified asphalt together with SureNail Technology, and carries a UL 2218 Class 4 impact rating. TruDefinition Duration STORM carries a UL 2218 Class 4 rating as well, which the company attributes to WeatherGuard Technology, a polymeric backing material applied to the back of the shingle. Corresponding hip and ridge shingles form part of the Class 4 roof system.
Oakridge is an architectural shingle that the company positions as a step up from three-tab shingles.
Woodmoor and Woodcrest form a collection designed to follow the shape and dimension of natural wood shake. Both have a nominal size of 14 1/4 inches by 40 inches, and Woodcrest is packaged at 90 shingles per square. Woodmoor has a thicker profile than Woodcrest, with a deeper shadow line, and its listing gives 130 MPH wind resistance. Woodcrest has a textured cut. Both shingles returned to the Owens Corning portfolio with enhanced product features, and they have installation instructions published jointly for the Woodcrest and Woodmoor pair.
Owens Corning publishes product data sheets, installation instructions and warranty documents for these lines on its roofing documents page. The library entries for the six shingles named in this record draw on those documents.
Relevant manufacturer history
Owens Corning was formed in 1938 from a partnership between Corning Glass Works and Owens-Illinois, which had begun in 1935 to develop fiberglass. The company was incorporated in Delaware as Owens-Corning Fiberglas Corp. on October 31, 1938, with offices in Toledo, and treats that date as the start of its business.
Its early products included Navy Board insulation in 1939. In 1954 it introduced the rotary fiberizer for centrifugally spun fiberglass wool. It appeared on the first Fortune 500 list in 1955. In 1977 it acquired a shingle and asphalt company and began converting plants to produce fiberglass-reinforced shingles. Its roofing and asphalt business expanded from that point.
The company moved into its present world headquarters on the Maumee River in Toledo in 1996. It filed for Chapter 11 protection in 2000 and emerged on October 31, 2006. It marked its 75th anniversary in 2013. The TruDefinition Duration FLEX shingle was introduced in February 2019 at the International Roofing Expo in Nashville, Tennessee.
