Overview
Carriage House is a CertainTeed laminated asphalt shingle in the residential shingle roofing category, built on the manufacturer's patented design of two full-size base shingles. The two bases give four full layers of shingle in the applied roof. The one-piece construction is applied as a single shingle.
Its deep 8-inch tabs, shadow lines and chamfered corners give a scallop-edged finish that recalls handcrafted slate roofs. The shingle shows its design most clearly on slopes of 9 inches per foot or greater. The scalloped geometry is part of the shingle form and granule surface, not a separate applied texture.
Materials and construction
Carriage House shingles have a fiber glass mat base. The Carriage House granule surface is ceramic-coated mineral granules set in refined, water-resistant asphalt. The laminated tabs are bonded with an asphaltic cement, and the shingles carry a self-sealing adhesive.
The shingle is offered in an algae-resistant (AR) form, which helps protect against staining or discoloration caused by algae (gloeocapsa magma). Colors of Carriage House vary by region and are listed in the product brochure and on the CertainTeed website.

Slope limits and underlayment
Carriage House is used on roofs with slopes of 2 inches per foot or greater. Slopes greater than 9 inches per foot show the product design most clearly. On Carriage House, slopes from 2:12 to less than 4:12 call for additional underlayment.
Where icing along the eaves can cause water to back up, CertainTeed Waterproofing Shingle Underlayment or an equivalent is applied as described in the instructions provided with the product and on the shingle package. On slopes greater than 21 inches per foot, four spots of roofing cement are applied under the shingle.
Hips, ridges and blending
Shangle Ridge accessory shingles of the matching color are the only caps used on hips and ridges of a Carriage House roof.
Carriage House can be blended into a CertainTeed Grand Manor roof. A common method uses several courses of Carriage House in the middle of a Grand Manor roof.
Warranty as published
Carriage House carries a lifetime transferable limited warranty against manufacturing defects for the original homeowner when applied to stated CertainTeed application instructions, plus up to 10-year SureStart Protection. Carriage House AR shingles also carry a 30-year algae resistance warranty when installed with the CertainTeed Hip and Ridge accessories named above.
