SwiftStart

CertainTeed SwiftStart is an asphalt starter shingle for the first course at the eaves and rakes of a shingle roof. Availability depends on sales region. It combines flexibility and sealant adhesive for resistance to blow-off and uplift. Each shingle measures 15-1/4 inches by 38-3/4 inches overall and yields two starter pieces, each 7-5/8 inches by 38-3/4 inches. The pieces are separated by folding along the perforated lines. A bundle covers 116-1/4 linear feet.

SwiftStart has a fiber glass mat base with ceramic coated mineral granules embedded in water-resistant asphalt. It is a two-piece shingle with perforated lines for folding apart.

SwiftStart is a starter course for shingle roofs with slopes greater than 2 inches per foot and a weather exposure under 5-5/8 inches. Low slope application, 2 to 4 inches per foot, takes additional underlayment. Where icing along the eaves can back up water, CertainTeed WinterGuard waterproofing shingle underlayment or an equivalent is applied to the deck.

The metric version of SwiftStart is designed for CertainTeed Landmark Series shingles and for similar metric shingles such as Landmark CertaSeal products. Its sealant adhesive is CertaSeal modified asphalt. In the metric listing a bundle holds 18 pieces and covers 116 linear feet.

• Meets the 2 inch minimum headlap requirement for metric shingles.
• Installed along the eaves and rakes, it qualifies Landmark Series roofs for an upgraded wind warranty of 130 mph.
• It takes the place of cut field shingles for the starter course.

Each bundle carries installation instructions with diagrams. SwiftStart sits at the roof perimeter beneath the first course of asphalt shingle roofing.

SwiftStart has a limited warranty against manufacturing defects, concurrent with the warranty of the field shingle it is installed with.
