Overview

CertainTeed RoofRunner is a synthetic polymer-based, scrim-reinforced underlayment. It is made for roof decks as a water-resistant layer beneath asphalt roofing shingles. It is manufactured to comply with the physical property requirements of ASTM D226.

Its top surface has a special treatment for slip resistance, including when wet. Printed circular targets on the top surface mark nailing locations.

Product type

RoofRunner is a synthetic residential roofing underlayment with a woven, scrim-reinforced construction. The top layer repels water, and the top surface is treated for slip resistance during installation. When it is used with a CertainTeed roofing product, it takes the same warranty period as the shingle above it.

Composition

RoofRunner is based on a woven polyolefin reinforcement laminated between layers of UV-stabilized polymer films. It is dimensionally stable when wet, so moisture does not cause the wrinkles that standard asphalt felt can show through shingles.

Roll data

The roll is 4 feet wide and 250 feet long.

  • Nominal thickness: 7 mils.
  • Gross roll size: 1,000 square feet.
  • Typical net coverage: 937.5 square feet per roll.
  • Shipping weight: about 23 pounds per roll.
  • Product weight: 110 gsm (ASTM D5261).
  • Roll weight with core: 24.5 pounds (ASTM D5261).

Technical data

Typical values:

  • Breaking strength: 98 lbs machine direction, 93 lbs cross direction (ASTM D5034).
  • Tear strength: 18 lbs machine direction, 16 lbs cross direction (ASTM D4533).
  • Liquid water transmission: passed (ASTM D4869).
  • Fire resistance with a Class A roof shingle: passed Class A (ASTM E108 and UL 790).
  • Moisture vapor transmission rate: 0.06 perms (ASTM E96).
  • UV exposure: passed 3 months (ASTM G155 cycle 1).
  • Coefficient of friction, top side: 0.41 static, 0.39 kinetic (ASTM D1894).
  • Coefficient of friction, bottom side: 0.73 static, 0.68 kinetic (ASTM D1894).

Standards and approvals

RoofRunner conforms to the physical requirements of ASTM D226 and to ASTM E108 Class A fire resistance under QAI file number B1107-1. It conforms to ICC-ES AC188 and has ICC-ES evaluation report ESR 4103. It is a Texas Department of Insurance (TDI) Approved Synthetic Underlayment, holds Florida Approval FL21841 and is Miami-Dade Product Control Approved.

Installation

On slopes of 4:12 and greater, a single layer is applied parallel to the eaves from the lower edge, printed side up. End laps are at least 6 inches, side laps are at least 3 inches, and adjacent end laps are offset at least 6 feet. Cap nails with 1 inch heads are required; staples and roofing nails are not used. Fastener spacing is 15 inches on center vertically and 12 inches on center horizontally, and vertical laps take 8 fasteners at 6 inches on center.

On slopes from 2:12 to below 4:12, CertainTeed WinterGuard waterproofing shingle underlayment or an equivalent covers the entire deck. Equivalents are waterproofing shingle underlayments meeting ASTM D1970 or, in areas not prone to snow or ice, two half-lap layers of RoofRunner. The double-coverage method uses a 25.5 inch starter strip, 48 inch sheets with a 22.5 inch exposure and 12 inch end laps. RoofRunner is not installed as ice dam protection along eaves.

Lap sealing uses asphalt roofing cement meeting ASTM D4586 Type II, or butyl rubber or urethane cements and caulks. Rolls are stored horizontally on the pallet, or on end after opening, below 120 degrees F. The sheet is not for permanent exposure to sunlight and weather, and is tested for UV resistance for up to 90 days; it is covered within 3 months. It is used under asphalt shingle roofing.

Warranty

RoofRunner is warranted against manufacturing defects for the warranty term. Under CertainTeed shingles, the warranty matches the installed shingles' warranty years. Under other manufacturers' shingles, the limited warranty runs 10 years from installation.
