Overview
CertainTeed Vycor Select is a self-adhered rubberized asphalt roofing underlayment, 25 mils (0.64 mm) thick. It is the thinner membrane in the Vycor range; Vycor Ice & Water Shield is 40 mils. The formulation meets industry standards for fastener sealability, equivalent to products that are often significantly thicker and heavier.
Vycor Select is used as a sloped roof underlayment beneath shingles and other roof coverings to resist water penetration from wind-driven rain and ice dams. It is made by the makers of Vycor Ice & Water Shield.

Construction and surface
The rubberized asphalt is backed by a paper release liner. A RIPCORD embedded in the adhesive gives a split release on demand, for faster application on straight runs and easier positioning at valleys and dormers.
The surface is slip resistant and its film resists scuffing and tracking oil in hot weather. Unlike granular surfaced membranes, the membrane does not adhere to the underside of the exposed roof covering. The color is gray-black.

Application
For wind-driven rain, Vycor Select goes over the whole roof deck; it is a vapor barrier, so full coverage requires ventilation in the roof construction. For ice dams, it is adhered along the eaves and carried above the highest expected ice dam. It also covers valleys, rake edges, chimneys and skylights.
Suitable decks are clean, dry, continuous and made of plywood, wood composition, wood plank, metal, concrete or gypsum sheathing. Wood planks are closely butted. Concrete, masonry and DensGlass Gold are primed with Perm-A-Barrier WB Primer, applied at 250-350 ft2/gal (6-8 m2/L).
Application is at 40 degrees F (5 degrees C) or higher for air, deck and membrane. Minimum side lap is 3.5 in. (90 mm) and minimum end lap 6 in. (150 mm) on this membrane. Valley and ridge pieces are centered, draped and pressed in place, working from the center outward and from the low point upward. Maximum recommended exposure is 90 days.
Smooth shank, electroplated galvanized nails fasten the shingles. If the membrane must be nailed on steep slopes in hot or extreme cold weather, it is back-nailed and the nails are covered by overlapping with the next sheet. The membrane may not self-seal open fastener holes left by removed fasteners, so they are patched.
Limitations and storage
- The membrane is not compatible with EPDM or TPO; Vycor Ultra underlayment is named for tie-ins.
- It is not compatible with polysulfides, flexible PVC or high concentrations of resin (pitch) found in some wood plank decks.
- Certain product applications are prohibited in hot desert areas in the southwestern United States.
- It is not applied where it is exposed to interior living space because of its slight asphaltic odor.
- Metal drip edges are placed over the membrane.
- Vycor Select is stored in original unopened packaging at 40-90 degrees F (5-32 degrees C) and used within one year of manufacture.
