Overview
High Performance Starter is an asphalt starter shingle from CertainTeed for the first course of a shingle roof. It is made for use with Belmont, Grand Manor or Highland Slate shingles in the 18 inch by 36 inch size. It belongs to the CertainTeed Integrity Roof System.
Composition and format
The starter has a fiber glass mat base and ceramic-coated mineral granules embedded in water-resistant asphalt. The shingles are pre-cut to size and carry two parallel factory-applied self-sealing adhesive stripes, which are activated by the heat of the sun. The dual sealant strips are there for increased wind resistance.
- Overall size: 10 inches by 36 inches

Application limits
The starter is used on shingle roofs with slopes greater than 2 inches per foot and a weather exposure under 8 inches. Low slope applications, 2 to 4 inches per foot, take additional underlayment. Where icing along the eaves can back up water, CertainTeed WinterGuard waterproofing shingle underlayment or an equivalent is applied to the deck. With Carriage House shingles, the starter course color and sealant show through the scalloped edge of the first course.

Installation and warranty
Installation instructions with diagrams are on the main roof shingle bundle wrap. The starter runs along eaves ahead of the field courses on asphalt shingle roofing.
Starter shingles carry a limited transferable warranty to the consumer against manufacturing defects. The limited warranty is concurrent with the warranty of the field shingle they are installed with.
