Overview
Windsor Scotchgard Protector, Malarkey inventory SKU 285, is a heavyweight designer shingle in the Malarkey steep-slope residential line. It is an open-tab shingle made with NEX polymer-modified asphalt, and it carries Scotchgard Protector from 3M for protection against discoloration and black streaks caused by blue-green algae.
The product belongs to the Designer category of Malarkey's asphalt shingles. It is one of the asphalt shingle products sold for steep-slope roofs, and it is listed for the United States market.
Materials and construction
Windsor Scotchgard Protector is a mineral-surfaced, self-sealing shingle. Its coating is NEX polymer-modified bitumen (asphalt) on fiberglass reinforcement. The NEX coating brings increased flexibility, higher tensile strength, and tear and impact resistance.
The surface combines ceramic granules that give varied color, weatherability and protection from blue-green algae. The granules also include 3M Smog-Reducing Granules. The algae protection applies only to blue-green algae (Gloeocapsa magma) and excludes other algae, mold, mildew, lichens, moss and other biological growths.

Installation and slope limits
The shingles are applied over a Malarkey underlayment or an approved, code-compliant substitute. They are fastened to the deck with approved fasteners, and Malarkey recommends corrosion-resistant nails. Staples are not allowed. Installation instructions are on the shingle wrapper through a QR code, and industry standards are in the NRCA manuals.
- The product is not used on roofs with a slope below 2:12 (2 inches [51 mm] per 12 inches [305 mm]).
- On slopes from 2:12 up to 4:12 (4 inches [102 mm] per 12 inches [305 mm]), a double layer of underlayment is required. The IBC and IRC allow a single layer of ASTM D1970 underlayment in place of a double layer.
- A factory-applied self-sealing strip activates in warm weather. In cold weather or windy locations hand-sealing is recommended, but it is not required if the sealant activates.
- On slopes of 21:12 (21 inches [533 mm] per 12 inches [305 mm]) and greater, hand-sealing of the tabs and nine nails per shingle are required.
Storage
Windsor Scotchgard Protector shingles are stored in a cool, dry, well-ventilated area, protected from the weather, until they are applied. Pallets are not double-stacked.
Warranty as published
The shingle carries a Limited Lifetime Warranty and a 110 mph (177 kph) Limited Wind Warranty. Combined with other Malarkey products it can carry a 140 mph (225 kph) Enhanced Wind Warranty. A separate Limited Lifetime Scotchgard Protector Warranty covers the growth of blue-green algae.
