Legacy Scotchgard

Legacy Scotchgard Protector, Malarkey inventory SKU 273, is a laminated, high-profile architectural shingle made with NEX polymer-modified asphalt. It sits in the Architectural category of Malarkey's steep-slope residential shingles and is listed for the United States market.

The shingle has a pronounced, distinctive look and uses The Zone, a nailing area designed to improve the accuracy of nail placement. Like the other Scotchgard Protector shingles, it includes Scotchgard Protector from 3M to protect against discoloration and black streaks caused by blue-green algae. It is one of the asphalt shingles in Malarkey's steep-slope range.

Legacy Scotchgard Protector is a mineral-surfaced, self-sealing shingle coated with NEX polymer-modified bitumen (asphalt) and fire retardant fillers on a non-woven fiberglass mat. The NEX coating brings increased flexibility, extreme weather protection and stronger granule adhesion.

Its ceramic granules give varied color and weatherability, protection from blue-green algae, and smog reduction through 3M Smog-Reducing Granules. The algae protection covers blue-green algae (Gloeocapsa magma) only, and excludes other algae, mold, mildew, lichens, moss and other biological growths. The shingle also has a double rain seal.

• The exposure is 5⅝ inches (143 mm).

Legacy Scotchgard Protector is listed under ICC approval ESR-3150 with ICC-ES AC438, and under FBC approval #14809.

Shingles are applied over a Malarkey underlayment or an approved, code-compliant substitute and fastened to the deck with approved, corrosion-resistant nails. Staples are not allowed. Instructions are on the wrapper through a QR code.

• The minimum slope is 2:12 (2 inches [51 mm] per 12 inches [305 mm]).
• From 2:12 up to 4:12 (4 inches [102 mm] per 12 inches [305 mm]), a double layer of underlayment is required. The IBC and IRC make an exception for a single layer of ASTM D1970 underlayment.
• The factory-applied self-sealing strip activates in warm weather. Hand-sealing is recommended in cold weather or windy locations, but is not required if the sealant activates.
• Above 21 inches (533 mm) per 12 inches (305 mm) of slope, Legacy Scotchgard Protector needs hand-sealing underneath and six nails.

Pallets are not double-stacked, and the shingles are stored in a cool, dry, well-ventilated area until applied.

Legacy Scotchgard Protector carries a Limited Lifetime Warranty and a 110 mph (177 kph) Limited Wind Warranty. It can be combined with other Malarkey products for a 130 mph (209 kph) Enhanced Wind Warranty. A Limited Lifetime Scotchgard Protector Warranty covers the growth of blue-green algae.
