Highlander

Highlander, Malarkey inventory SKU 241, is a laminated architectural shingle made with NEX polymer-modified asphalt. It is part of the Architectural category of Malarkey's steep-slope residential shingles, sold in the United States. The shingle uses The Zone, a larger nailing area designed to improve fastener placement.

Highlander is one of the residential asphalt shingles in the range. Its distinguishing feature is cool roof listing for four colors, described below.

Highlander is manufactured on a non-woven fiberglass mat impregnated on both sides with NEX polymer-modified bitumen (asphalt) compounded with a fire-retardant mineral stabilizer. The surface combines ceramic granules that give varied color and weatherability with 3M Smog-Reducing Granules. Other granules add solar reflectivity. The shingle has a double rain seal.

Dimensions of the Highlander shingle:

• Width is 13¼ inches (337 mm) with a 1/8 inch tolerance either way.
• Length: 38⅞ inches (0.99 m), plus or minus ¼ inch.
• Each course shows 5⅝ inches (143 mm).
• The typical granule adhesion result is 0.35 g.

Highlander packs 66 shingles to the square in 3 bundles, with 16 squares per pallet.

Highlander lists ICC-ES ESR-3150 (AC438) and Florida Building Code approval FL36890.

Highlander Golden Amber, Ivory Mist, Sienna Blend and Silverwood have radiative property values listed with the Cool Roof Rating Council (Licensed Manufacturer ID 0850, classification Production Line). They can be used to comply with California Energy Code Title 24 Part 6 and Los Angeles County, California Title 31 cool roof requirements. The CRRC and Title 24 statements apply only to these four colors.

• Golden Amber (0850-0024): solar reflectance 0.21 initial and 0.21 weathered; thermal emittance 0.94 and 0.91; SRI 22 and 21.
• Ivory Mist (0850-0055): solar reflectance 0.25 and 0.24; thermal emittance 0.92 and 0.95; SRI 26 and 26.
• Sienna Blend (0850-0025): solar reflectance 0.21 and 0.20; thermal emittance 0.92 and 0.92; SRI 21 and 20.
• Silverwood (0850-0065): solar reflectance 0.21 and 0.21; thermal emittance 0.93 and 0.93; SRI 21 and 21.

Shingles are applied over a Malarkey underlayment or an approved, code-compliant substitute and attached with approved fasteners. Malarkey recommends corrosion-resistant nails, and staples are not allowed. Installation instructions in three languages are on the wrapper through a QR code.

• The minimum pitch is 2:12 (2 inches [51 mm] per 12 inches [305 mm]).
• From 2:12 up to 4:12 a double layer of underlayment is required. The IBC and IRC make an exception for a single layer of ASTM D1970 underlayment.
• The factory-applied self-sealing strip activates in warm weather, and hand-sealing is recommended in cold weather or windy locations.
• Highlander on a slope steeper than 21 inches (533 mm) per 12 inches (305 mm) requires hand-sealing underneath and six nails.

The warranty packages available for Highlander include a Limited Lifetime Warranty and a 110 mph (177 kph) Limited Wind Warranty. With other Malarkey products it can carry a 130 mph (209 kph) Enhanced Wind Warranty.
