Relevant manufacturer history
Company materials give Whirlwind's start as 1955 in Houston, Texas, when C.O. Sturdivant founded the business. It began as a maker of attic fans before moving into metal building parts. The company's website describes it as a family-run business with 65 years of history.
By 1961 the company was manufacturing metal building components, including panels, secondary structural framing and trim. In 1966 a structural engineer joined the company to begin designing pre-engineered building systems. After the death of C.O. Sturdivant in 1972, his son Jack Sturdivant became president and chief executive officer. In 2012 Jack's son Ty became president.
The original Houston plant is one of two manufacturing facilities of 250,000 square feet each. The second is in Tallapoosa, Georgia. Company brochures describe the business as family owned.
