Identify the Super Span X roof panel

Super Span X is Whirlwind Steel Buildings' exposed-fastener roof and wall panel. Whirlwind also calls the named product a PBR panel, but this record is for its own measured section, not for every panel sold under that broad description. The current Miami-Dade notice 25-0701.01 covers a 24-gauge Super Span X steel roof-panel system. Its manufacturer drawing 14-117_R was first dated April 15, 2014 and revised for the second time on March 25, 2021. This page uses that revision for its dimension and angle values. The notice was approved August 7, 2025 and runs to July 17, 2030. Those dates distinguish the drawing generation from the later approval that carries it.

The manufacturer photo shows the named roofing on Whirlwind's Pineywoods Storage project. Whirlwind identifies that installation as 26-gauge Super Span X, so the photograph helps recognize the rib pattern without defining the approved 24-gauge sheet in the drawing. The filed drawing supplies a straight cross-section, an enlarged major rib, a shallow intermediate bead and a separate side-lap view. A replacement inquiry should name Whirlwind, Super Span X, drawing 14-117_R revision 2, the measured building sheet and whether the requested material is steel or fiberglass. The linked files include the exact roof approval, Whirlwind's panel flyer and erection manual, an archived earlier revision and a one-page ordering summary.

Three tall ribs and shallow four-inch beads

The 2021 revision 2 section gives 36 inches of installed roof coverage. Tall ribs repeat on 12-inch centers, making three major modules across the cover. Between the tall ribs, low formed beads repeat at four-inch intervals. The drawing labels an 18-inch rollspace dimension separately; that is a production callout rather than the finished cover or a flat-coil blank width. Count the tall ribs and the intermediate beads when comparing an old sheet with a new sample. Matching the 36-inch cover and 12-inch main pitch alone can miss the low features that run along each pan and align with the adjoining sheet.

Each full major rib rises one and one-quarter inches above the pan. Its crest is one inch wide, shown as a half-inch on either side of the centerline. The enlarged cross-section labels a 3.3125-inch base, 1.656 inches from the centerline to each base end, and a 47.2312-degree web angle. The low bead has a 0.188-inch rise, a 0.75-inch crest made from two 0.375-inch halves, and a 1.4375-inch base made from two approximately 0.719-inch halves. The details also mark a 0.0938-inch typical bend radius. These are printed metal-section callouts, not measurements inferred from a roof photograph. The one-page ordering sheet lists them beside an original non-scale identification sketch.

Check the bearing leg and both edge shapes

Super Span X has a side-lap bearing leg, a feature the Whirlwind panel flyer distinguishes from the Super Span family drawing. The 2021 approved roof drawing shows one outer rib joining the next panel and marks where side-lap stitching and a continuous tape line belong in that assembly. Its roof layout uses 36-inch installed coverage after the joint is made. The side view is valuable for identifying lap hand: mark which edge of the existing sheet sits over its neighbor and which one supports it. Record the weather face, eave direction and the direction in which sheets were installed across the roof. An edge that has been field-trimmed should be identified separately from an original factory-formed edge.

The approved drawings do not provide a complete numeric schedule for both free-edge tails, finished overall panel width, nesting clearance and every bend at the joint. The flyer’s 3 5/16-inch figure describes the major-rib base; it does not give an independent lap-tail length. The drawing’s partial end-rib measurements likewise cannot be combined into an invented die shape. For a replacement that must join an existing run, send an undamaged full-width sheet end or a measured cross-section preserving both factory edges. A trial length can then be laid against the roof's existing under-lap and over-lap before full-length sheets are ordered. This same edge comparison belongs in a separate GRP fabrication inquiry.

Metal roof assembly and dated revisions

The current notice documents 24-gauge steel with a 0.024-inch minimum painted-panel thickness in its approved roof assembly. The panel-properties block also records 50-ksi yield strength, AZ55 steel coating and a Kynar 500 paint coating for that described construction. The drawing calls for panel fastening to the roof supports, stitching at side laps and continuous sealant along the relevant joint. Its end-lap detail requires at least six inches of overlap for the approved metal-panel assembly. It sets a maximum allowable panel span of five feet in that specific approval. Those assembly values belong to the dated steel roof system, not to a separately fabricated fiberglass sheet or to every gauge shown in Whirlwind's general marketing flyer.

Whirlwind's technical erection manual includes a Super Span X roof layout and a separately titled light-transmitting-panel installation for that panel. The light-transmitting detail has its own four-inch minimum end-lap note and minimum three-member support condition. It does not name the light-transmitting material as fiberglass, and its four-inch note is not the six-inch end-lap instruction on the 24-gauge steel approval drawing. An older Miami-Dade notice, 16-0211.04, holds drawing 14-117_R revision 1 dated January 21, 2016. That archived section prints the same headline 36-inch cover, 12-inch tall-rib pitch and 1.25-inch rise as revision 2. The older notice expired July 17, 2019; it is available as a dated file rather than a second Super Span X product page.

Prepare a measured metal replacement request

A useful metal quotation starts with the exact 2021 revision 2 roof drawing and the one-page profile sheet. State 36-inch installed cover, 12-inch major pitch, four-inch minor-bead pitch, 1.25-inch tall-rib rise, 47.2312-degree web and the side that contains the bearing leg. Add the required number of sheets, measured finished length of each run, steel gauge, coating and color, roof slope, purlin spacing and position of any end lap. Supply a square photograph of the full cross-section with a ruler perpendicular to the ribs, plus close photographs of both intact side edges. A supplier can compare those inputs with its own rolls and identify the proposed panel by its actual section rather than by a generic PBR label.

The metal-panel shop should state its proposed effective cover, section dimensions, lap hand, material thickness, maximum sheet length and whether a short trial piece is available. For a repair adjoining older roofing, physically compare that trial piece with both edge shapes and the shallow pan beads before setting the final count. The published 2025 Whirlwind flyer lists the broader Super Span family in 22, 24 and 26 gauge; this page's Miami-Dade roof drawing is specifically 24 gauge. An inquiry in another gauge requires that gauge's own specification and project engineering. For a roof survey and installation sequence, the built-up metal roof installation service can help establish sheet lengths, support positions and where the replacement will meet existing metal.

Take a separate GRP or fiberglass route

A translucent GRP replacement is a different material order using the Super Span X section as a shape reference. Give a fiberglass panel maker the 2021 roof drawing, the single-page dimensional summary and a physical sheet sample preserving both side laps. Identify the installed 36-inch cover, the three 12-inch major modules, the low four-inch bead spacing and the one-and-one-quarter-inch rib rise. State whether the replacement joins metal on one side or both, the required finished length and quantity, and the intended light-transmission and color choice. The maker needs to confirm its pattern and edge geometry against the existing roof before quoting a matched sheet. Steel-panel approval values do not become GRP span or fastening values merely because the outside profile appears similar.

Whirlwind's erection manual documents a light-transmitting-panel assembly for Super Span X, but does not identify a fiberglass product or publish a GRP profile sheet for it. Dipcraft Manufacturing supplies corrugated fiberglass panels, accepts sketches of existing roof and wall sections, and reviews custom shapes against available patterns, tooling and order quantity. That is an independent fiberglass feasibility route for a Super Span X request, not evidence that a Dipcraft stock sheet already fits this exact side lap. Ask the GRP fabricator for its own sample, laminate thickness, span and fixing instructions, and compare the proposed side joint against a sound metal panel. Keep the metal and GRP quotations separate so each producer identifies the material and section it would actually supply.

For a fiberglass match, request a profile review from Dipcraft Manufacturing.

Five regional Texas metal quotation contacts

A measured Super Span X metal inquiry can be circulated to roof-panel businesses in different parts of Texas. Metal Warehouse serves the Sherman area of North Texas with formed roofing panels. Xtreme Metals describes in-house metal-panel work near Flint and Tyler. Quality Metals operates panel-forming facilities around San Antonio. Lucid Metal Works describes roofing-metal fabrication in Houston, and All Precision Metals lists formed R-panel roofing from El Paso. These businesses provide five regional starting points for discussing a replacement sheet. Their public product pages do not establish that each owns Whirlwind's exact 2021 tooling. Attach the same Whirlwind drawing, a full-width field sample and the one-page profile sheet to every inquiry so any proposed alternative can be checked on the same measurements.

Ask each contact to identify where its proposed metal section agrees with the Whirlwind drawing and where it differs: cover, rib and bead spacing, web angle, side-lap hand, gauge, finish and available lengths. Request a short formed sample for a mixed old-and-new roof. Record whether the shop would manufacture from an existing compatible roll, commission special tooling or refer the request back to Whirlwind. The separate fiberglass inquiry belongs with a GRP specialist rather than with these steel suppliers. The manufacturer drawing in the file section remains the shared reference for the geometry of the 24-gauge 2021 revision, while the undamaged roof sample resolves the unprinted lap details on the actual building.
