Overview

ALUCOBOND FaceFastened is a flat-panel ALUCOBOND PLUS assembly fastened through its visible face into matching attachment rails. The panels are fabricated to flat sizes with hemmed or exposed edges, without routed returns. It is a drained and back-ventilated rainscreen and is used on interior or exterior surfaces.

Color-coated face screws attach the panel to black-coated extruded aluminum joint and end rails. This leaves an open-joint shadow line, so screw color and placement are part of the visible facade. The data sheet is dated July 28, 2023.

Components

Four components are listed.

  • ALUCOBOND PLUS panel: 4 mm aluminum composite panel in 91 standard finishes or custom finishes, in customized widths of 6 to 62 inches and customized lengths of 7 inches to 16 feet, weighing 1.56 lb/ft2.
  • Joint rail: extruded aluminum, black, 4.25 inches wide and 8 feet long, 0.502 lbs/ft.
  • Start, end and mid rail: extruded aluminum, black, 3.19 inches wide and 8 feet long, 0.409 lbs/ft.
  • Attachment screw: 304 stainless steel, in 10 standard colors or a custom color, with a head width of 0.472 inch and a length of 0.825 inch, weighing 1.5 lbs per 250-count.

Edges, screws and terminations

  • The front skin folds over the perimeter edges, so the color is consistent on all sides.
  • Fastener heads are oversized and painted, either to match the panel face or in a contrasting color.
  • Part of each fastener shaft is unthreaded, which prevents over-rotating the screw on the panel face.
  • The system ends in a powder-coated end extrusion or in ALUCOBOND AXCENT flashing painted to the designer's choice.

Listed uses are facades, soffits, canopies, roofs, screen walls, column covers and interior walls. Components are the End Rail, Joint Rail and screws. The system does not route the panels and uses exposed fasteners.

Fastening

The screw spacing is engineered to meet and exceed the standards of ASTM E330, and a separate screw spacing document is published.

Expansion holes

ALUCOBOND PLUS has a rate of expansion of 1/8 inch of movement in an 8-foot panel with a 100 degree F temperature change. Expansion holes are pre-drilled with a P drill bit (0.323 inch). The pinning hole is pre-drilled with a #2 (0.221 inch) drill bit in the bottom left corner of each panel. A drilling jig for each bit is shown.

Storage and handling

ALUCOBOND PLUS is stored in a cool dry area with relatively stable temperatures. Excessive temperature fluctuation can form condensation on stored sheets and cause permanent surface damage, especially on anodized material. Crates shipped horizontally need support to prevent sagging, which can leave a permanent bow. Small quantities can be stored on edge on an A-frame rack with a solid base and back rest.
