Overview

CertainTeed Vycor Ice & Water Shield is the original self-adhered roofing underlayment in the Vycor range. It combines an aggressive rubberized asphalt adhesive with a layer of slip resistant coated high density cross-laminated polyethylene film.

It is used on sloped roofs under mechanically attached roof coverings such as asphalt shingles, slate, tile, cedar and standing seam metal. The membrane resists water penetration from water back-up behind ice dams and from wind-driven rain, and it protects valleys, skylights, protrusions and other flashing areas.

Product identification

The membrane bonds to the deck without heat or added adhesives. The product SKU is prfa-665.

Construction and surface

The rubberized asphalt surface is backed by a foldless release paper. A RIPCORD embedded in the adhesive provides split release on demand. The embossed surface is slip resistant, and unlike granular surfaced membranes it does not adhere to the underside of the exposed roof covering.

The membrane resists attack from fungus and bacteria. Color is gray-black.

Roll data

The membrane is supplied in 3 ft wide rolls in three lengths, packed in corrugated cartons.

  • 75 ft (22.9 m): 225 ft2 (20.9 m2), 61.4 lbs (27.9 kg), 35 rolls per pallet
  • 66.6 ft (20.2 m): 200 ft2 (18.6 m2), 55 lbs (24.9 kg), 35 rolls per pallet
  • 36 ft (11.0 m): 108 ft2 (10.4 m2), 33.6 lbs (15.3 kg), 25 rolls per pallet

Performance properties

  • Thickness: 40 mil (1.02 mm), ASTM D3767 method A
  • Tensile strength: 250 psi (1720 kN/m2), ASTM D412 (Die C modified)
  • Elongation: 250%, ASTM D412 (Die C modified)
  • Low temperature flexibility: unaffected at -20 degrees F (-29 degrees C), ASTM D1970
  • Adhesion to plywood: 3.0 lbs/in width (525 N/m), ASTM D903
  • Permeance (max): 0.05 perms (2.9 ng/m2 s Pa), ASTM E96
  • Installed material weight (max): 0.3 lb/ft2 (1.3 kg/m2), ASTM D461

Ice dam and wind-driven rain coverage

Several variables set the height of an ice dam and so the membrane coverage: climate and annual snowfall, slope, overhang width, insulation and ventilation, valleys and exposure. On a low slope, ice dams extend farther inward from the roof edge. A northern or shaded exposure generally contributes to larger ice dams.

The membrane is extended above the highest expected level of water back-up, and above the highest expected snow and ice level on the wall sheathing of vertical side walls and front walls. A double layer can be used along eaves and in valleys. For wind-driven rain protection, the membrane covers the entire roof deck.

Installation

The membrane goes directly on a clean, dry, continuous structural deck of plywood, wood composition, metal, concrete or gypsum sheathing. Concrete, masonry and DensGlass Gold are primed with Perm-A-Barrier WB Primer at 250-350 ft2/gal (6-8 m2/L). Application is at 40 degrees F (5 degrees C) or higher.

Side laps measure 3.5 in. (90 mm) at minimum, end laps 6 in. (150 mm) at minimum. The dashed line on the membrane surface marks the 3.5 in. side lap alignment for successive courses. Valley and ridge pieces are centered and pressed in place, working outward from the center. Smooth shank, electro-plated galvanized nails fasten the shingles.

Limitations

  • Cover within 90 days; the membrane is not left permanently exposed to sunlight.
  • It is not installed under copper, COR-TEN or zinc metal roofing at high altitudes; Vycor Ultra underlayment is named for those roof types.
  • Certain product applications are prohibited in hot desert areas in the southwestern United States.
  • The membrane is not compatible with EPDM or TPO, and Vycor Ultra is named for tie-ins.
  • It is not compatible with polysulfides, flexible PVC or high concentrations of resin (pitch) in some wood plank decks.
  • It is an air and vapor barrier.
  • The standard membrane is stored unopened in its original packaging, dry, at 40-90 degrees F (5-32 degrees C), and used within one year of manufacture.
