Overview

DECRA Panel Vent is a roof exhaust component that provides a ventilation outlet for attic air near the roof ridge. It is made in versions matched to six DECRA profiles: Villa Tile, Tile, Shingle XD, Shingle Plus, Shake XD and Shake.

Panel Vents are used with attic ventilation inlets at the eave or soffit areas that access the attic air space. They are not used as air ventilation inlets. The recommended total net free area of the inlets equals or exceeds the total net free area of the outlet ventilation from all installed Panel Vents.

DECRA provides an attic ventilation calculator on its website to help determine the number of vents needed, based on the 1-in-150 or 1-in-300 ventilation calculation rules, as applicable to the local building code and the use of a vapor retarder.

Location

Panel Vents are installed on the last full course below the roof ridge, and no more than four feet down from the roof ridgeline peak.

Opening and sequence

The installation sequence has a 19-inch wide by 7-inch high opening marked and cut in the sheathing, centered between the planned vent layout lines or battens. An exterior-grade sealant is applied at the primary vent screen, the screen is fastened around its perimeter and flashed, and the profile-matched vent unit is then installed in the panel course.

On a direct-to-deck installation the screen flange enters the cut hole. On a batten installation the flange rises upward. The flashing order shown is bottom strip, sides, then top strip, and the adjacent panels overlap the vent unit as detailed for the roof system.
