Relevant manufacturer history
The company traces its roofing to the Second World War, when the Decraspray Company in the United Kingdom developed a bituminous emulsion coating for corrugated metal buildings. The coating was non-reflective and was used to shield structures from air raids.
After the war, the New Zealand entrepreneur Lou Fisher acquired the rights to manufacture the coating outside the United Kingdom. In 1955 he trademarked the product as Decramastic and added crushed stone granules, which kept panels from sticking together and improved appearance. This led to stone-coated metal roofing for the residential market. The website also states that DECRA stone-coated metal roofs have been made since 1957.
The DECRA name was trademarked in 1978. In the 1980s demand grew after California wildfires led to a ban on traditional shake roofing, and the product became known nationwide. Underwriters Laboratories later gave DECRA its highest fire rating.
