Overview
DECRA Shake XD is an interlocking, aggregate-coated steel roof panel shaped to resemble heavy-weight dimensional roofing shakes. The profile is formed with multiple vertical ribs that make 2 flat steps, each of which has raised and lowered pan sections.
The panel is pre-corrugated, pressure-formed aluminum-zinc alloy-coated steel to ASTM A 792/A 792M, with a ceramic-coated, colored-stone chip finish. Shake XD maximum recycled steel content is 30 percent. Shake XD belongs to the DECRA residential roof coverings family and is a different profile from the batten-installed Shake panel.
Materials and construction
The panel steel is 26 gauge, 0.0179 inch (0.455 mm) thick. The XD Valley, side flashing, roof-to-wall flashing, pipe jack flashing, Shake XD Underpan, fascia metal and Shake XD Hip & Ridge are all specified at 26 gauge, 0.0179 inch.

- Exposed area of a Shake XD panel once installed: 12-3/8 inches by 49-7/8 inches (314 mm by 1,267 mm).
- Side panel laps: 2-1/2 inches (64 mm).
- Panel leading edges are bent down 1/2 inch (13 mm), which provides overlap for weather protection and adjoining to the prior roof panel course.
- Installed weight: 150 pounds per 100 square feet.
Finishes and colors
Shake XD is offered in four colors: Antique Chestnut, Pinnacle Gray, Midnight Eclipse and Woodland Green. Midnight Eclipse and Woodland Green are made to order, with longer production times possible. The finish is the ceramic-coated, colored-stone chip finish on all four.
Performance and approvals
- Fire rating: Class A, B or C is selected for ASTM E 108 and UL 790, and the panel is classed as non-combustible.
- Impact resistance: UL 2218 Class 4.
- ICC-ES Evaluation Report ESR-1754 covers DECRA Shake XD for direct-to-roof deck installation.
- Florida Building Code approval for Shake XD direct-to-roof deck installation: FL9759-R10.
- Miami-Dade County, Florida Building Code approval for direct-to-roof deck installation: NOA No. 23-0207.04 (Shake XD)
- CCMC National Building Code of Canada approval for Shake XD direct-to-roof deck installation: 13551-R.
The warranty period written for Shake XD on single-family detached residential use is lifetime limited, and for multi-family residential and non-residential use it is 50-year limited. Both Shake XD terms carry a wind term of resisting blow-off in wind speeds up to 120 mph and a hail term with a hail stone size limit of 2.5 inches.
Installation
Shake XD requires a minimum slope of 3:12 (25 percent). On Shake XD, slopes from 2:12 (16 percent) to less than 3:12 make the panels decorative, to be installed over a roof covering system in accordance with the local building code.
Shake XD panels are installed direct to the roof deck. Direct-to-deck installation requires a minimum of 5 fasteners in the back panel clip, placed horizontally along the clip in the target screw hole punch-outs. Each Shake XD panel is laid in a random stagger pattern. Shake XD valleys have a minimum 6-inch (152 mm) overlap in the direction of flow, with panels cut into each side of the valley straight and true to its line.
Exposed ends of hips and ridges are bent and folded and capped with an end cap or a piece of similar material. Racking, vertical alignment of panels, even offsets and patterned layouts are not used. Lead, copper and pressure-treated lumber containing copper compounds are excluded from the system.
Accessories and trims
- XD Valley: pressure formed into a valley with a stone-coated valley cap, the upper surface matched to the shingle material.
- Side flashing: finished in the ceramic-coated, colored-stone chip finish to match the roofing.
- Underpan: pressure formed to counter flash roof penetrations in the Shake XD profile.
- Fascia metal: a pressure formed angle in 3.5 inch (89 mm) or 5 inch (127 mm) sizes, in stone-coated or painted versions.
- Hip & Ridge: covers, fasciae, drips, rakes and other trim matching the roofing material, color and finish.
Accessories include ASTM D 226 Type I number 15 or Type II number 30 felt underlayment, 40 mil self-adhering bituminous perimeter underlayment to ASTM D 1970 for ice dam protection, ASTM C 920 elastomeric sealant, and corrosion-resistant No. 9 screws that penetrate the substrate at least 1/2 inch (13 mm).
