Overview
DECRA Shake is an interlocking, aggregate-coated steel roof panel in the DECRA residential roof coverings family. The panel is pressure formed with multiple vertical hand-split style shakes that make up one shake step, and it resembles heavy-weight dimensional roofing shakes.
The product is specified as a pre-corrugated, pressure-formed, aluminum-zinc alloy-coated steel panel to ASTM A 792/A 792M. The finish is a ceramic-coated, colored-stone chip finish. Shake maximum recycled steel content is 30 percent.
Other DECRA tile, shingle and shake profiles have different exposures, slope limits and supporting details, so Shake is a separate profile in the range.
Materials and construction
The base metal is 26 gauge steel, 0.0179 inch (0.455 mm) thick. The same 26 gauge thickness is specified for the Shake valley, side flashing, roof-to-wall flashing, pipe jack flashing, underpan, fascia metal and hip and ridge pieces.

Profile and dimensions
- Overall panel size: 14-5/8 inches wide by 53 inches long (371 mm by 1,346 mm).
- Installed exposure: 12-5/8 inches by 51 inches (321 mm by 1,295 mm).
- Side panel laps: 2 inches (51 mm).
- Panel leading edges are bent down 1 inch (25 mm), which provides overlap for weather protection and nailing purposes.
- Installed weight: 150 pounds per 100 square feet.
Finishes and colors
Shake comes in six colors: Charcoal, Chestnut, Granite Gray, Shadowood, Weathered Timber and Woodland Green. Woodland Green is made to order, with longer production times possible. Each is applied as the ceramic-coated, colored-stone chip finish.
Performance and approvals
- Fire rating: Class A, B or C is selected for ASTM E 108 and UL 790, and the panel is classed as non-combustible.
- Impact resistance: UL 2218 Class 4.
- ICC-ES Evaluation Report ESR-2901 covers DECRA Shake with batten installation.
- Florida Building Code approval for batten installation: FL9759-R10.
- Miami-Dade County, Florida Building Code approval: NOA No. 23-0207.04 (Shake)
- CCMC National Building Code of Canada approval for batten installation: 10241-R.
The warranty period written for Shake on single-family detached residential use is lifetime limited, and for multi-family residential and non-residential use it is 50-year limited. Both Shake terms carry a wind term of resisting blow-off in wind speeds up to 120 mph and a hail term with a hail stone size limit of 2.5 inches.
Installation
Shake requires a minimum slope of 3:12 (25 percent). At slopes from 2:12 (16 percent) up to less than 3:12 the panels are considered decorative and are installed over a roof covering system in accordance with the local building code.
Shake is installed on battens. The batten layout is 1 by 4 inch counter-battens placed vertically over the rafters or trusses at 24-inch (610 mm) centers maximum, with staggered ends, and 2 by 2 inch battens set perpendicular to the rafters or trusses at 12-5/8 inch (321 mm) centers, also with staggered ends.
Each panel is installed in a random stagger pattern. Batten installation requires a minimum of 4 fasteners, placed in the nose and penetrating the back-shelf of the preceding course, with 2 fasteners at overlaps and 2 at other intermediate points. Shake valleys have a minimum 6-inch (152 mm) overlap in the direction of flow, with panels cut into each side of the valley straight and true to its line.
The panels are not racked, lined up vertically, set with even offsets or laid in a pattern. Lead, copper and pressure-treated lumber containing copper compounds in the treatment solution are not used with the system.
Accessories and trims
- Valley: 26 gauge aluminum-zinc alloy-coated steel.
- Side flashing: pressure formed to flash vertical roof surface transitions, with a ceramic-coated, colored-stone chip finish to match the roofing.
- Roof-to-wall flashing: finish matched to the exterior.
- Underpan: pressure formed to counter flash roof penetrations in the Shake panel profile.
- Fascia metal: a pressure formed angle installed at the first batten to cover build-up, in 3.5 inch (89 mm) or 5 inch (127 mm) sizes.
- Hip & Ridge: covers, drips, rakes and other trim matching the roofing material, color and finish.
Shake underlayment is ASTM D 226 Type I number 15 or Type II number 30 non-perforated asphalt-saturated organic felt, with an optional perimeter underlayment of 40 mil self-adhering polymer-modified bituminous sheet to ASTM D 1970. Fasteners are corrosion resistant, minimum number 9, long enough to penetrate the substrate 1/2 inch (13 mm), in silver or color matched to the panels. Sealant is one-part elastomeric roofing-grade sealant to ASTM C 920.
