Overview
CertainTeed WinterGuard Sand and Granular is a self-adhering waterproofing shingle underlayment. It is made for roof decks as a barrier beneath shingle, slate and tile roofs, and it is used to prevent leakage from water back-up caused by ice dams or wind-driven rain.
It is most often installed at roof eaves and valleys, and as a waterproofing underlayment for low-slope shingle, slate and mechanically fastened tile roofing. The technical data sheet covers three products together: WinterGuard Sand, WinterGuard Granular and WinterGuard Sand X.
Composition
WinterGuard is a reinforcement impregnated and coated with SBS-modified asphalt. The top surface is mineral matter, either sand or granules, which gives traction during application. The adhesive bottom surface is covered by a disposable silicone-coated release film that is split longitudinally down the middle.
The surface finish names the variants. Sand has a sand surface, Granular has a granule surface, and Sand X is a separate listing with its own standards. A short-roll version of Sand is also listed.

Roll sizes and physical data
All versions are 3 feet wide. Roll data by surface finish follows.
- Sand (short): 32.5 feet long, 97.5 square feet, 60 mils typical thickness, 6 inch side laps, 6 inch end laps, about 34 pounds per roll, 48 rolls per pallet.
- Sand: 65 feet long, 195 square feet, 60 mils, 6 inch side laps, 6 inch end laps, about 66.4 pounds per roll, 30 rolls per pallet.
- Granular: 65 feet long, 195 square feet, 60 mils, 4 inch side laps, 6 inch end laps, about 66.4 pounds per roll, 30 rolls per pallet.
- Sand X: 65 feet long, 195 square feet, 55 mils, 3 inch side laps, 6 inch end laps, about 55 pounds per roll, 25 rolls per pallet.
Performance data
WinterGuard Granular, Sand and Sand X are tested to ASTM D1970. Each of the following results is reported as Pass.
- Maximum load at break, machine and cross-machine direction: greater than 25 lbf/in (ASTM D2523).
- Elongation at break of the modified bitumen portion: greater than 10% (ASTM D2523).
- Adhesion to plywood at 75 degrees F: greater than 12 lbf/ft (ASTM D903).
- Thermal stability: less than 3 mm (ASTM D1204).
- Flexibility temperature: pass at -20 degrees F (ASTM D1970).
- Tear resistance, machine and cross-machine direction: greater than 20 lbf/in (ASTM D4073).
- Moisture vapor permeance: less than 0.1 (ASTM E96).
- Sealability around nail: no leakage (ASTM D1970).
- Waterproof integrity of laps: no leakage (ASTM D1970).
Construction and warranty
WinterGuard is a composite of asphalt and polymers formed into a rolled sheet. The asphalt makes the sheet vapor-tight, and the polymers keep it elastic and tacky so it seals around driven nails. Granular carries embedded granules and Sand carries embedded sand for traction during application. It is a component of the CertainTeed Integrity Roof System. It is warranted against manufacturing defects and stays watertight for the warranty period of the shingles above it, up to a maximum of 50 years.
Standards and approvals
WinterGuard Sand and WinterGuard Granular are listed to ICC-ES ESR-1492, ASTM D 1970, Florida Product Approval FL 11288 and CSA A123.22, and are Miami-Dade Product Control Approved. They are UL 790 classified for use as underlayment beneath Class A, B or C fire rated asphalt shingles.
WinterGuard Sand X is listed to NEMO NER-CTR-003, ASTM D 1970 and Florida Product Approval FL 46783, and carries the same UL 790 classification beneath Class A, B or C fire rated asphalt shingles.
Application limits
The minimum allowable application slope is 2:12. WinterGuard Sand and Granular products are applied beneath shingles, slate and mechanically fastened tile on acceptable roof decks. In asphalt shingle roofing the membrane sits under the field shingles at eaves and valleys or across the deck.
- Permanent exposure to sunlight is not allowed. The maximum exposure time is six months.
- WinterGuard does not adhere to wet or cold surfaces. For cold weather tack down, only roofing nails are used, and staples are not used under any circumstances.
- It is not applied over shingles or underlayment of any sort.
- It is a vapor barrier. Where it covers a majority of the roof deck, deck ventilation is provided.
- Where it contacts sealants or cements, solvent-based products are used sparingly, because excessive solvent-based adhesive can damage the polymer modified asphalt coating. Silicone-based sealants do not maintain adequate long-term adhesion to asphalt.
- The surface may become slippery under certain weather conditions.
