Overview

EverGuard Extreme TPO Smooth Membrane is a reinforced thermoplastic polyolefin (TPO) roof membrane with a smooth surface. It carries an enhanced weathering package and is intended for high-heat and solar roof applications on low-slope commercial buildings in the United States.

It is sold in four thicknesses: 50, 60, 70 and 80 mil. The rolls are white only. GAF has produced TPO for more than 20 years and operates five TPO manufacturing plants around the United States. EverGuard Extreme TPO is made at Mount Vernon, IN, and Gainesville, TX.

Within the TPO range it is the white heat-aging grade. A 50 mil Extreme sheet carries the guarantee coverage of a standard 60 mil TPO, and a 70 mil sheet is eligible for the same 30-year guarantee as a standard 80 mil TPO. It is used in TPO single-ply roofing assemblies that are mechanically attached, induction welded or adhered.

Thickness options

Nominal thickness is measured under ASTM D751 and the thickness over scrim under ASTM D7635. The ASTM D6878-21 minimums are 0.039 in. overall and 0.015 in. over scrim.

  • 50 mil: nominal thickness 0.050 in. (1.27 mm); thickness over scrim 20 mil nominal.
  • 60 mil: 0.060 in. (1.52 mm); 26 mil nominal over scrim.
  • 70 mil: 0.070 in. (1.78 mm); 27 mil nominal over scrim.
  • 80 mil: 0.080 in. (2.03 mm); 33 mil nominal over scrim.

The 50 mil sheet can be installed without T-joint patches and still qualify for a 25-year guarantee, unlike 60 mil standard TPO membrane. Only the membrane rolls carry the Extreme designation. TPO accessories are excluded.

Roll sizes and weights

Every thickness is supplied as a 10 foot by 100 foot (3.05 by 30.5 m) roll of 1,000 sq ft (92.9 sq m) or a 5 foot by 100 foot (1.52 by 30.5 m) roll of 500 sq ft (46.5 sq m).

  • 10 foot roll average weight: 271 lb (123 kg) at 50 mil; 322 lb (146 kg) at 60 mil; 373 lb (163 kg) at 70 mil; 420 lb (191 kg) at 80 mil.
  • 5 foot roll average weight: 136 lb (61.7 kg) at 50 mil; 162 lb (73.5 kg) at 60 mil; 136 lb (61.7 kg) at 70 mil; 210 lb (95 kg) at 80 mil.

Extreme TPO rolls leave the plant horizontally on pallets, banded and stacked pyramid-style, and are kept on pallets below 100°F (38°C) in a clean, dry area. Two people are the minimum crew for moving a roll.

Physical properties

The Extreme TPO values below are approximate guides. Several are given as machine direction by cross machine direction.

  • Breaking strength (ASTM D751, grab method): 360 lbf by 320 lbf (1,661 by 1,423 N) at 50 mil; 385 by 345 lbf (1,712 by 1,535 N) at 60 mil; 420 by 375 lbf (1,868 by 1,668 N) at 70 mil; 445 by 205 lbf (1,979 by 912 N) at 80 mil. The minimum is 220 lbf (978 N).
  • Elongation at break (ASTM D751): 29.40% at 50 mil, 29% at 60 mil, 29.60% at 70 mil and 28.60% at 80 mil. The minimum is 15%.
  • Tear strength (ASTM D751, 8 in. by 8 in. sample): 70 by 140 lbf (311 by 623 N) at 50 mil; 71 by 134 lbf (316 by 596 N) at 60 mil; 59 by 125 lbf (262 by 556 N) at 70 mil; 62 by 155 lbf (276 by 689 N) at 80 mil. The minimum is 55 lbf (245 N).
  • Factory seam strength, membrane failure: 123 lbf (547 N) at 50 mil; 134 lbf (596 N) at 60 mil; 149 lbf (663 N) at 70 mil; 161 lbf (716 N) at 80 mil. The minimum is 66 lbf (294 N).
  • Puncture resistance (FTM 101C Method 2031): 437 lb (198 kg) at 50 mil; 462 lb (210 kg) at 60 mil; 479 lb (217 kg) at 70 mil; 524 lb (238 kg) at 80 mil.
  • Linear dimensional change (ASTM D1204): 0.35%, 0.34%, 0.39% and 0.27% at 50, 60, 70 and 80 mil. The limit is plus or minus 1%.
  • Water absorption (ASTM D471): 0.15%, 0.12%, 0.29% and 0.14%. The limit is plus or minus 3%.
  • Brittleness point (ASTM D2137): -40°F (-40°C) at all thicknesses.
  • Ozone resistance (ASTM D1149): pass, with no cracks at 7x magnification.
  • Heat aging (ASTM D573): pass at all thicknesses. The limit is a weight change of 1.5% or less after 8 weeks at 275°F (135°C).

Weathering and heat resistance

Weather resistance under ASTM G155 exceeds 46,000 kJ/m² at 50 mil and 56,000 kJ/m² at 60, 70 and 80 mil. The ASTM D6878-21 minimum is 10,080 kJ/m² at 340 nm with no cracks at 7x magnification.

Accelerated UV exposure (UAWS) passes at all four thicknesses against a requirement of total radiation at 8,400 MJ/m² UV with no cracking.

The enhanced weathering package gives long-term heat and UV resistance, and the membrane meets ASTM G21 for fungal resistance. Heat aging is also tested under ASTM D573-13.

Colors and reflectance

Extreme TPO is available in white only. The CRRC rating (product ID 0676-0088) is listed below, using ASTM C1549 for solar reflectance, ASTM C1371 for thermal emittance and ASTM E1980 for SRI.

  • Initial values: reflectance 0.83, emittance 0.84, SRI 104.
  • Aged 3-year values: reflectance 0.72, emittance 0.91, SRI 90.

Title 24, Part 6 cool roof compliance applies to the white sheet.

Installation

The membrane suits all types of single-ply systems.

  • Mechanically attached: a quick, cost-effective system.
  • Induction welded: no adhesive is used, and the guarantee length equals that of an adhered system.
  • Adhered: installed with EverGuard TPO Quick Spray, TPO Quick Spray LV50, TPO Low VOC Bonding Adhesive, TPO 3 Square Low VOC Bonding Adhesive, TPO SBA 1121 Bonding Adhesive or WB 181 Bonding Adhesive.
