Overview

EverGuard TPO Smooth Membranes are smooth reinforced thermoplastic polyolefin (TPO) single-ply roof membranes with heat-welded seams. They are made in 45, 60 and 80 mil for low-slope commercial roofing in the United States and are suited to mechanically attached, adhered and induction-welded systems.

TPO needs no plasticizers for flexibility and has natural fungal resistance, meeting ASTM G21. The EverGuard TPO core formula has been installed on more than 7 billion square feet of roofs and in the field for more than 20 years.

It is the standard white and colored line of TPO membrane roofing from GAF. It is made at Mount Vernon, IN; New Columbia, PA; Cedar City, UT; Gainesville, TX; and Valdosta, GA.

Thickness and construction

Nominal thickness is tested under ASTM D751 and thickness over scrim under ASTM D7635. The ASTM D6878 minimums are 0.039 in. and 0.015 in. The 60 mil membrane is also available in a minimum 60 mil version.

  • 45 mil: nominal thickness 0.045 in. (1.14 mm); 15.8 mil nominal over scrim.
  • 60 mil: 0.060 in. (1.52 mm); 24.1 mil nominal over scrim.
  • 80 mil: 0.080 in. (2.03 mm); 31.4 mil nominal over scrim.

In the ASTM D6878 weather-resistance test the membrane lasts 2 to 2.5 times the industry standard, depending on thickness. Guarantees for eligible systems are available up to 20 years for 45 mil, 25 years for 60 mil and 30 years for 80 mil, with additional requirements.

Roll widths and weights

Rolls are 100 feet (30.5 m) long. The 12 foot width covers more area with fewer rolls and fewer seams.

  • 12 ft (3.66 m), 1,200 sq ft (111.5 sq m): 307 lb (139 kg) at 45 mil; 386 lb (175 kg) at 60 mil; 504 lb (228 kg) at 80 mil.
  • 10 ft (3.05 m), 1,000 sq ft (92.9 sq m): 256 lb (116 kg); 322 lb (146 kg); 420 lb (191 kg).
  • 8 ft (2.43 m), 800 sq ft (74.3 sq m): 204 lb (93 kg); 257 lb (117 kg); 336 lb (152 kg).
  • 6 ft (1.83 m), 600 sq ft (55.7 sq m): 153 lb (70 kg); 194 lb (88 kg); 252 lb (114 kg).
  • 5 ft (1.52 m), 500 sq ft (46.5 sq m): 128 lb (58 kg); 162 lb (74 kg); 210 lb (95 kg).

Smooth TPO rolls ship horizontally, banded and stacked pyramid-style on pallets. A clean, dry area below 100°F (38°C) is the storage condition, and two people or more are needed per roll.

Colors and reflectance

Available colors are White, Gray, Energy Gray, Slate Gray, Tan, Energy Tan, Desert Tan, Dark Bronze, Dark Brown, Goldenrod, Sky Blue, Regal Blue, Electric Blue, Hartford Green, Patina Green, Regal Red and Terra Cotta.

White, Energy Tan and Energy Gray form the reflective group that can reduce cooling costs and the urban heat island effect.

Each color has a CRRC rating based on ASTM C1549, C1371 and E1980. Aged values marked with an asterisk are interim laboratory figures.

Field study

GAF acquired and analyzed EverGuard TPO samples from roofs across the United States. Roofs 8 to 16 years old were performing well, and in most instances met the ASTM D6878-19 requirements for new membranes.

Installation

  • Mechanically attached: installed practically year-round.
  • Induction welded: no adhesives, practically year-round, with the same guarantee length as an adhered system.
  • Adhered: with EverGuard TPO Quick Spray, TPO Quick Spray LV50, TPO Low VOC Bonding Adhesive, TPO 3 Square Low VOC Bonding Adhesive, TPO SBA 1121 Bonding Adhesive or WB 181 Bonding Adhesive.

The 60 mil and 80 mil smooth membranes are available with MembraneShield Temporary Dirt-Blocking Film, a monolayer protective sheet adhered with a water-insoluble acrylic-based adhesive. It stays on during roof installation and is removed after installation or up to 90 days later. Only labeled rolls include it.

Accessories

  • EverGuard TPO Primerless 6 in. Cover Tape: self-adhering unreinforced TPO with a butyl backing.
  • EverGuard TPO Split Pourable Sealer Pocket: low-profile, can be cut down to fit around penetrations.
  • EverGuard TPO Vent Boot: molded in one size for pipes and conduits of 1 to 6 in. (25.4 to 152 mm), with stainless steel clamping rings.
  • EverGuard TPO Scuppers: TPO-coated metal and unreinforced membrane for wall scuppers.
