Leo-Klip

Leo-Klip is a concealed clip fastening system for Kingspan KS Series and Optimo insulated metal wall panel assemblies. One clip design serves both intermediate and end supports, and the system is used with the QuadCore KS Series panels at 24, 30, 36 and 42 inch module widths. It works with all of the panel facer gauge pairings in the load tables, from 22 ga on both faces to 26 ga on both faces.

The system comes in two configurations, Leo-Klip and Leo-Klip+. Each is built for different loading and performance requirements, and each is published with its own set of span tables. The clip is set in butyl sealant. Fastening with either configuration has no impact on the air, water, vapor or thermal performance of the panel assembly, and it limits the need for back-fastening.

In the Leo-Klip configuration the clip is set in butyl sealant and fixed with two 1/4 inch HWH DP3 fasteners, with the length chosen from the panel thickness. At end supports a 1/4-14 by 7/8 inch HWH DP1 stitch fastener is added, and the fastener is hidden.

The Leo-Klip+ configuration adds two 1/4-14 by 2 inch face fasteners at each end support, and an exposed fastener there is covered by trim. Its DP3 fasteners carry a bonded washer.

The span tables describe the connections as follows.

• Intermediate connection, both configurations: concealed Leo-Klip with two 1/4-14 HWH fasteners at every support
• End connection, Leo-Klip: concealed Leo-Klip with two 1/4-14 HWH fasteners and one 1/4-14 by 7/8 inch stitch fastener at each end support
• End connection, Leo-Klip+: concealed Leo-Klip+ with two 1/4-14 HWH fasteners and one 1/4-14 by 7/8 inch stitch fastener, plus two 1/4-14 by 2 inch face fasteners at each end support

In single-span wall conditions, each configuration raises allowable span over the standard clip by an amount that depends on the gauge of the steel support. Leo-Klip+ increases spans by up to 40 percent.

• 16 ga steel support: 19 percent with Leo-Klip and 31 percent with Leo-Klip+
• 14 ga steel support: 20 percent and 39 percent
• 12 ga steel support: 20 percent and 40 percent
• 1/4 inch steel support: 20 percent and 40 percent

The Leo-Klip load and span tables cover KS Series panels in 42, 36, 30 and 24 inch widths on 12 ga and 1/4 inch steel supports, for six facer pairings each: 22/22, 22/24, 22/26, 24/24, 24/26 and 26/26, exterior gauge first. Each table gives allowable spans for single, double and multiple span conditions at negative wind pressures from 20 psf to 50 psf in 5 psf steps, for panel thicknesses of 2, 2.5, 3, 4, 5 and 6 inches.

For a 42 inch wide panel with 22 ga on both faces on 12 ga support steel, a 2 inch panel spans 11 feet 10 inches single span at 20 psf and 4 feet 10 inches at 50 psf. A 6 inch panel spans 17 feet 1 inch single span at 20 psf and 6 feet 10 inches at 50 psf. The 2 inch panel in double span is 11 feet 1 inch at 20 psf, and in multiple span it is 12 feet 1 inch.

The 22/24 table for the same width and support gives the 2 inch single span at 20 psf as 11 feet 6 inches, and the 6 inch single span as 17 feet 1 inch.

The Leo-Klip+ tables are laid out the same way and start with 24 inch wide panels, then 42, 36 and 30 inches, on 12 ga and 1/4 inch support steel. The deflection limit is L/180, the wind pressures are unfactored ASD service loads, and thermal differential is excluded.

For a 24 inch wide panel with 22 ga on both faces on 12 ga steel, single spans at 20 psf are 11 feet 11 inches at 2 inches, 15 feet 11 inches at 3 inches, 19 feet 6 inches at 4 inches and 25 feet 3 inches at 6 inches. At 50 psf the same panels span 7 feet 3 inches, 9 feet 10 inches, 11 feet 10 inches and 11 feet 10 inches. The 4 inch panel in double span reaches 20 feet at 20 psf, and in multiple span it also reaches 20 feet.

With a 24 ga interior in the 22/24 table, the 3 inch single span at 20 psf is 15 feet 5 inches, against 15 feet 11 inches with a 22 ga interior.

Both sets of tables are for negative uniform loads only. Fastener pull-out values are based on published data for 1/4-14 Triangle Blazer fasteners, and 12 ga support steel (grade 50, FU 65 ksi) carries a pull-out value of 1,450 lbs per fastener. Spans can also be governed by temperature differentials, deflection requirements, support steel gauge and unequal spacing of secondary members.

These panels are a kind of metal wall panel assembly, and the clip is the fastening component for their support conditions.
