Geocel Phantom Metal Roof Sealant

Geocel Phantom Metal Roof Sealant is a gun-grade sealant based on a proprietary formulation of polymers. It has no plasticizers, so it keeps its flexibility. Six translucent colors let the metal panel color radiate through while adding a hint of color to the sealant. The result is a monolithic appearance on the roof.

It is used for sealing seams and through-roof projections on metal roof restoration and repair work. It bonds to PVDF, SMP and polyester-coated steel, including Kynar 500, and applies even when damp. It is exterior use only, is UV resistant and is paintable. The cured sealant is mildew resistant.

Properties

  • Chemistry: proprietary polymer formulation, solvent technology, no plasticizers
  • Grade: gun-grade consistency
  • Primer: not required on most surfaces
  • Elongation at break: 585% (ASTM D412)
  • Tensile strength at peak: 386 psi (ASTM D412)
  • Shore A hardness: 39 (ASTM C661)
  • Tack-free time: 120 min (ASTM C679)
  • Adhesion to Kynar: 13.7 lbf (ASTM C794)
  • Adhesion to aluminum: 16.4 lbf (ASTM C794)
  • Adhesion to vinyl: 18.6 lbf (ASTM C794)
  • Adhesion to wood: 17.1 lbf (ASTM C794)
  • Not a flammable liquid under NFPA liquid guidelines
  • Weather and ultraviolet light resistant
  • Applies even when damp; dampness from dew does not interfere with adhesion
  • Resealable; may be applied over itself
  • Non-stringing formulation; tools and cleans up
  • Application below 40 °F: easier if the sealant is warmed
  • Surface above 140 °F: do not apply until the surface cools
  • Paint after at least 24 hours of cure; some paints need three to five days
  • Shelf life: 18 months from date of manufacture

Where it is used

  • Sealing metal roof seams and through-roof projections
  • Primer-less application to brick, concrete, metal, glass, treated and untreated wood, asphaltic materials and vinyl
  • Where ultraviolet resistant material is required
  • Where a paintable sealant is required
  • Adheres to coated steel (Kynar 500-based finishes), asphalt shingles, modified bitumen, vinyl, steel and other common building substrates
  • Not for extruded polystyrene insulating sheathing, acrylic skylight glazing surfaces, areas where food is processed or stored, or potable water applications

Application

  1. Clean the joint of dust, dirt and other contaminants with a dry rag or brush. The surface should be basically clean and dry.
  2. Do not use xylene or MEK to clean joints unless the surface can dry before sealant is applied.
  3. Size the joint at least 4 times the anticipated movement. Minimum joint size is 1/4" x 1/4". Maximum joint size is 1/2" wide by 3/8" deep.
  4. Control joint depth, not over 3/8", with an open cell backer rod. In shallow joints, install bond breaker tape to prevent three-point contact.
  5. Apply with conventional caulking equipment, filling the joint completely.
  6. Tool the bead. A soap solution may be used as a lubricant.
  7. Clean excess sealant from the surface and tools promptly with a regionally compliant cleaning solvent.
