What 5V Crimp is
5V Crimp Metal Roofing is an exposed-fastener roof system from Gibraltar Building Products, Building Accessories Division. The panel has a crimp profile and a coastal look. It is fire resistant and suitable for residential applications. Panels are sold in a wide variety of colors, with matching accessories.
The profile is also a preformed roof and wall panel. Uses cover roofing, fascia, siding, soffit and mansard work. Equipment screens on roofs and mansards. For reroofing and metal roof replacement with exposed-fastener panels, 5V Crimp is one of the profiles in this class.
Each panel has a sidelap seam. An anti-siphon channel is built into the sidelap. The panel can be cut with standard snips. A recommended roof slope of 3:12 or greater applies.
Profile and sizes
- Rib height: 7/16"
- Coverage width: 24"
- Overall panel width: 25 1/2"
- Crimp rib spacing in the profile: 11 1/2"
- Panel length: various
- Texture: smooth
- Style: sidelap seam, exposed fastener
- Yield strength: minimum 56ksi
Each panel provides 24 in. of roof coverage. The 1 1/2 in. difference between overall width and coverage width is the sidelap. Panels are made to length, so runs from eave to ridge are formed in one piece.

Materials and finishes
Three substrates are used. Galvalume steel sheet, AZ50, conforms to ASTM A792 and is used for all panels. Galvanized steel sheet, G90, conforms to ASTM A446 and is used for unpainted panels. Galvanized steel sheet, G60, conforms to ASTM A446 and is used for painted panels.
The aluminum-zinc alloy coating is 55% aluminum, 43.4% zinc and 1.6% silicone. It is applied over a steel core at the steel mill by a hot-dipped process. The aluminum gives barrier protection and the zinc gives sacrificial protection. A clear acrylic coating prevents hand and foot marking. It also adds formability and corrosion protection during transit and storage. Bare galvanized steel carries a layer of pure molten zinc over a steel core. It is shiny when new and weathers to a dull gray.
Two finishes are available.
- Silicone Modified Polyester (SMP) paint, with a 40-year warranty. A 2-coat system of primer and color coat goes on the exposed surfaces, with a 2-coat system on the unexposed side.
- Bare mill-finished Galvalume with a clear acrylic coating, with a 25-year warranty against rupture, structural failure and perforation.
Bare galvanized steel is not covered by any warranty. Surface rusting is not covered by the acrylic Galvalume warranty or the SMP warranty.
Colors
Twenty SMP colors are offered with the 40-year paint finish warranty.
- Bright White, Polar White, Ivory, Light Gray, Smoke
- Armadillo, Black, Black Crinkle, Light Stone, Timber Tan
- Desert Sand, Brown, Burnished Slate, Crimson Red, Rustic Red
- Hawaiian Blue, Gallery Blue, Colony Green, Pine, Copper Penny
Substrate and installation
The roof deck is plywood. Minimum 19/32" CDX plywood is used inside Miami-Dade for new construction. Minimum 15/32" CDX plywood is used for re-roofing. Minimum 15/32" CDX plywood is used outside Miami-Dade.
The Miami-Dade assembly is a non-insulated wood deck of 19/32" or greater plywood, CDX, 4-ply. The deck is attached with 8d ring shank nails at the spacing in the tested table. Underlayment is ASTM D 226 Type II with 4" side-laps and 6" end-laps. It is fastened with corrosion resistant tin-caps and 1 1/4" annular ring-shank nails. Spacing is 6" on center at all laps and two staggered rows 12" on center in the field of the roll. Valleys follow Roofing Application Standard RAS 133. Flashings and penetrations follow the same standard.
Installers carry a minimum of two years of experience on panel projects of this kind. Panels are unloaded, stored and erected with care to prevent bending, warping, twisting, and end and surface damage. Material is stored above ground on well skidded platforms under waterproof covering. Ventilation between panels prevents condensation buildup.
Accessories for the system are numbered 1 to 11.
- Eave drip or eave flashing: ED-1 or EF-3
- End wall flashing: ED-1 or EF-3
- Ridge cap: RC-3
- Ridge or hip cap: RC-2 or RC-8
- Transition flashing: TF-1
- Gable rake: GR-2 or GR-4
- Preformed valley: PV-1 or PV-2
- Side wall flashing: SW-1
- Fascia cover: FC-5, FC-7 or FC-9
- Pipe boot
- Gambrel flashing: GF-1
Fastening and design pressures
Roof zones set the fastener spacing. Zone 1 is the field. Zone 2 and Zone 3 are the perimeter and corners. Dimension (a) is 10% of the minimum width of the building or 40% of the mean height of the roof, whichever is smaller. Dimension (a) is never less than 4% of the minimum width of the building or 3 feet.
- Zone 1: maximum fastener spacing 16" on center. Maximum design pressure -82.25 psf over minimum 19/32" plywood and -63.75 psf over minimum 15/32" plywood.
- Zone 2: maximum fastener spacing 8" on center. Maximum design pressure -176 psf over minimum 19/32" plywood and -112.5 psf over minimum 15/32" plywood.
- Zone 3: maximum fastener spacing 8" on center. Maximum design pressure -176 psf over minimum 19/32" plywood and -112.5 psf over minimum 15/32" plywood.
Interpolation is allowed between field and perimeter and corner test pressure values. Extrapolation and rational analysis by a Florida licensed architect or structural engineer is allowed outside the Miami-Dade HVHZ compliance area. It is not allowed above the maximum tested design pressures within the Miami-Dade HVHZ compliance area.
Approvals and testing
5V Crimp carries a Florida Building Code approval and a Miami-Dade Notice of Acceptance for the 5V Crimp Metal Roofing Panel System. The Miami-Dade approval covers non-structural metal roofing in steel, with a maximum design pressure of -176 psf, tested to TAS 125. It is designed to comply with the Florida Building Code, including the High Velocity Hurricane Zone. The panel is listed in the UL Fire Resistance Directory and holds UL 2218 Hail Impact Class 4. A TDI approval is coming soon.
- Fire testing per ASTM E108 or UL790
- Wind driven rain test per TAS 100
- Structural capacity test per TAS 125
- Salt spray testing of coating, 2000 hours per ASTM G23/G155
- Accelerated testing of coating, 1000 hours per ASTM B117
Fastening design pressure capacities meet uplift resistance requirements of UL 580 Class 90 or higher. Panels carry permanent ink marking that identifies the manufacturer, building code approvals and date of production.
What each version is for
SMP painted panels suit roofs where color matters. They offer the 20 listed colors and a 40-year warranted paint finish. The siliconized polyester system is chosen for exterior gloss, color retention, chalk resistance and formability.
Bare mill-finished Galvalume panels suit roofs where a metallic look is wanted. The 25-year warranty covers rupture, structural failure and perforation. The clear acrylic coat keeps new and weathered appearance uniform, but it is still a mill finish. A painted finish is the choice where a uniform appearance is expected.
Bare galvanized panels suit unpainted work on G90 steel. They carry no warranty.
Plywood thickness separates the jobs. Minimum 19/32" plywood goes under new construction inside Miami-Dade. Minimum 15/32" plywood goes under re-roofing and under work outside Miami-Dade.
