What Isobox is and where it is used
Isobox is a double-steel sheet wall panel insulated with rigid foam. It serves as insulated metal panel roofs and walls cladding on industrial buildings and as internal partitions. It is suitable for cooling chambers. The tongue-and-groove joint is completed by exposed fasteners and a saddle clip.
The Isobox range includes Isobox and Super Isobox, and the same wall panel family includes Isobox Piano. The panel is available in 45¼" width, a size suited to cold storage, and in thicknesses of up to 8".
Isocindu groups the uses of the panel into these building types:
- Industrial: warehouses, factories and distribution centers.
- Cold chain: cold chambers, freezers and mid-size labs.
- Commercial: offices, retail and restaurants.
- Architectural: schools, museums and government buildings.
- Specialized: airports and green building.
Versions and sizes
Isobox comes in three modules. Each has a male joint on one edge and a female joint on the other, and each has a box-profile interior face.
- Isobox: 39⅜" module width, with box, striated or flat exterior face.
- Super Isobox: 45¼" module width, with box, striated or flat exterior face.
- Isobox Piano: 39⅜" module width, with a piano-profile exterior face.
Face profiles are striated, box and flat. The flat face is also made embossed. The interior face is standard in the box profile.
Panel thicknesses are 1⅝", 2", 2½", 3", 4", 5", 6" and 8". Panels are installed vertically or horizontally. Minimum panel length is 8'-0". The load chart covers walls and does not apply to ceilings.
Panel weight with 26/26 steel runs from 2.07 PSF at 1⅝" to 3.27 PSF at 8". The 26/26 weights by thickness are:
- 1⅝": 2.07 PSF
- 2": 2.14 PSF
- 2½": 2.24 PSF
- 3": 2.33 PSF
- 4": 2.52 PSF
- 5": 2.70 PSF
- 6": 2.89 PSF
- 8": 3.27 PSF

Materials, coatings and colors
Both faces are prepainted steel. The core is rigid foam, and the core options are PUR, PIR, PIR R+ and Leaf. The foam core has a maximum flame spread of 25 and a maximum smoke developed index of 450.
Exterior steel gauges are 22, 24 and 26. Interior gauges are 22, 24, 26 and 28. Striated and flat profiles use 24 gauge or higher.
Coating options are polyester standard G60, Kynar G90 and Stainless Steel 314. The standard coating is USDA approved. Polyester standard G60 and PVDF (Kynar) G90 USDA approved finishes are available in all the standard white colors for food processing and storage. Other paint systems are available on demand.
Standard colors are Pure White RAL 9010, White Gray RAL 9002, Signal White RAL 9003, Silver Gray RAL 9006 and Anthracite Gray RAL 7016.
Coatings are matched to thermal expansion. White colors do not need an expansion joint or gap. Dark colors, such as silver gray, gray anthracite, red, brown and green, require a standard gap of 1/8" to reduce thermal expansion.
The gasket is open cell. A butyl gasket is available on request, and butyl seal can be placed in the plant. The gasket barrier prevents vapor leaks.
Tolerances and structural data
Dimensional tolerances for Isobox are:
- Length, up to 9' 10": ± ⅛"
- Length, over 9' 10": ± ⅜"
- Working length: ± 1/16"
- Thickness, over 4": ± 2 %
- Perpendicularity deviation: ¼"
- Misalignment of the internal metal surfaces: ± ⅛"
- Bottom sheet coupling: 1 + ⅛"
Allowable spans for simple and multiple supports are tabulated at each panel thickness. Loads run from 16 to 40 PSF for the 26/26 gauge PIR panel, with a 10% safety factor. Results assume a maximum deflection of L/180. They are calculated without fasteners and do not take into account the thickness of the supports or the fastening method. They exclude the temperature differential.
Deflection limits used are commonly L/180 or L/240. Load calculations for each project are set by the design team and the structural engineer.
Fire, approvals and water resistance
Isobox, striated and flat, is Factory Mutual certified in thicknesses from 1⅝" to 6", under standards 4880 and 4881. Standard 4880 is the approval standard for Class 1 fire rating of insulated wall panels. Standard 4881 is the approval standard for Class 1 exterior wall systems.
The approved panel has a polyisocyanurate core and prepainted steel faces of 0.016 in or heavier on both sides. Under 4881 the panel carries a Severe (SH) hail resistance rating and a wind pressure rating of +70/-70 in Zone TC. Maximum support steel spacing is 46.9 in. Minimum support steel thickness is 0.08 in, with a minimum yield stress of 50 ksi.
Approved fastening system A through-fastens the panel with three EJOT JT3-6-5.5 fasteners at each panel and support interface, every 46.9 in on center. One fastener sits on each side of the panel joint and one passes through the joint.
Fire tests follow ASTM E84 and FM Approval 4880 and 4881. Panels with PIR core can reach a higher fire resistance classification. Interlocking joints and sealant systems give resistance to water infiltration.
Handling, cutting and installation
Panels are lifted, not slid off bundles, to avoid scratching. The printed handling steps are:
- Use 2-3 people per panel depending on size.
- Always wear gloves, long sleeves and safety glasses.
- Grab panels from the side or underside, never the face.
- Use suction lifters or panel grips to avoid bending.
- For long panels, 13 ft ½", use support at 3 or more points.
- Always carry panels edge up or face up.
Site cuts are made on a stable, clean, flat surface, ideally a workbench with wood supports. The panel lies face up, supported under the cutting line, and cuts run away from other panels and finished surfaces. Nibblers or shears cut the metal face only. A fine-tooth jigsaw cuts wall or roof panels. A fine-tooth circular saw makes straight cuts in the face only. A fine-tooth hand saw handles small adjustments. An angle grinder is not used, because its hot sparks burn the coating and create rust points. Metal shavings come off with a soft brush or air blower, and aggressive solvents are not used.
Before panels go up, the supporting structure of steel framing, concrete or masonry is plumbed, level and aligned in all planes.
Fasteners are square pancake screws #14 with a washer with gasket. Length depends on panel thickness:
- 1⅝": 14x2"
- 2": 14x3"
- 2½": 14x3", with 14x4" optional
- 3": 14x4"
- 4": 14x5"
- 5": 14x6"
- 6": 14x8"
- 8": 14x10"
Installation under Factory Mutual requirements uses only stainless-steel fasteners.
Orientation and standard details
A horizontal installation emphasizes the length of the wall. It needs vertical supporting structures at defined intervals and gives more vertical joints. A vertical installation emphasizes building height and can reduce the number of vertical joints, because panels can run the full length of the wall.
Standard details for vertical mounting include a parapet condition and a base step. Factory-installed continuous butyl sealant sits in the vertical panel joint. At the parapet, an ISO-L48 cap trim takes ¼" 14 x 1" pancake DP3 fasteners without washers at 12" o.c., with continuous sealant on both sides of the trim.
At the base, an ISO-L53 base flashing sits over continuous sealant. A base angle or channel with a minimum 3" vertical leg for panel attachment is set in sealant. ¼" HWH through fasteners with 1⅛" bonded washers hold the exterior face.
What each version is for
Super Isobox at 45¼" width suits cold storage. The module width is 45¼".
Isobox at 39⅜" width serves industrial wall cladding and internal partitions. Thicknesses run from 1⅝" to 8".
Isobox Piano pairs a piano-profile exterior face with the box interior face.
Striated, flat and embossed faces suit architectural work in schools, museums and government buildings, and the box profile suits warehouses and distribution centers. Where the faces meet food-processing and storage needs, the USDA approved coatings in the standard white colors apply. Stainless Steel 314 is a coating option.
