Overview

Landmark TL is a CertainTeed asphalt shingle made of three laminated layers, with a thick profile styled after classic wood shakes. Standard Landmark and Landmark PRO, by contrast, are two-piece laminated shingles.

The overall size is 13 1/4 inches by 40 inches. Landmark TL is designed to resist blow-off in high winds up to 110 mph with normal installation and up to 130 mph with special installation. In residential shingle roofing it is the field covering, with starter, underlayment, flashing and ridge products specified separately.

Materials and construction

The shingle has a fiber glass mat base, with ceramic-coated mineral granules embedded in refined, water-resistant asphalt. Three pieces are laminated together in a special asphaltic cement, and every Landmark TL shingle has self-sealing adhesive strips.

Landmark TL algae-resistant (AR) shingles help protect against dark or black discoloration, sometimes called staining or streaking, caused by blue-green algae (Gloeocapsa magma). AR shingles are not available in California. Available colors vary by region. The colors offered for Landmark TL algae-resistant (AR) in each region are listed in the product brochure and on the CertainTeed website.

Slope limits and underlayment

Landmark TL is recommended for slopes of 4 inches per foot and greater to achieve optimum appearance. Low-slope applications, from 2:12 to less than 4:12, require CertainTeed WinterGuard Waterproofing Shingle Underlayment, or an equivalent meeting ASTM D1970, over the entire deck surface.

Where icing along the eaves can cause water to back up, WinterGuard or its equivalent is applied on all slopes of a Landmark TL roof, following the instructions supplied with the product and on the shingle package.
