Overview

Presidential Shake IR (Impact Resistant) is a CertainTeed residential shingle roofing product made of two laminated layers with a puncture-resistant nonwoven reinforcement on its back surface. The reinforcement adds an extra level of impact resistance: the shingle can withstand the force of a two-inch steel ball dropped from twenty feet without cracking.

The shades, textures, sculpted edges and staggered design give the roof the look of wood shakes. The shingles are algae resistant and help protect against staining or discoloration caused by algae.

Materials and construction

The shingle has a fiber glass mat base with ceramic-coated mineral granules embedded in refined, water-resistant asphalt. The laminated pieces are bonded with an asphaltic cement. The back surface carries a nonwoven reinforcement, and the shingles have a self-sealing adhesive applied.

Slope limits and underlayment

Slopes of 4 inches per foot and greater are recommended for optimum appearance. Low-slope applications from 2:12 to less than 4:12 use WinterGuard Waterproofing Shingle Underlayment, or an equivalent meeting ASTM D1970, or two layers of 36-inch wide felt shingle underlayment meeting ASTM D226, D4869 or D6757 lapped 19 inches, over the entire deck.

The Class 4 impact resistance applies when the shingles are installed in a new roof or tear-off application and not by roofing over existing shingles. Above 21 inches per foot, Presidential Shake IR is nailed with nine nails and roofing cement spots under each tab.

Starter, hips and ridges

Presidential Starter IR forms the two-layered starter course. Cedar Crest IR or Mountain Ridge shingles in a like color cap the hips and ridges, and the availability of hip and ridge shingles varies by region.

Warranty terms

Presidential Shake IR carries a lifetime limited transferable warranty against manufacturing defects for the original homeowner, plus 10 years of SureStart Protection.

Layers and installation features

The shingle is built from a fiber glass base and a protective outer layer, with color blending technology in the granule surface. A locking system holds the shingles in place in high winds. Self-sealing adhesive strips bond each course.
