Overview

Double Eagle Ponderosa is a textured, low-profile concrete roof tile from Eagle Roofing Products. A center bevel suggests smaller hand-split wood shakes and changes the perceived scale compared with the undivided Ponderosa face. The profile appears in residential concrete tile roofing.

It is one of the Double Eagle profiles in Eagle's flat tile range, next to Double Eagle Bel Air. A standard and an Eaglelite weight are both made.

Dimensions and weight

  • Nominal size: 17 inches long by 12 3/8 inches wide
  • Headlap: 3 inches
  • Tiles per 100 square feet: 88.5
  • Standard installed dry weight: 9.7 psf, approximately 970 pounds per 100 square feet
  • Eaglelite installed dry weight: 7.2 psf, approximately 720 pounds per 100 square feet
  • Tile type: Type III, low profile
  • Tile factor: 1.4683 cubic feet, ratio 1.044

Eaglelite version

Code recognition

IAPMO Uniform Evaluation Service report ER-1900, held by Eagle Roofing Products of Rialto, California, covers the Eagle and Eaglelite interlocking concrete roof tiles and their accessories. It was first issued on 01/15/2016 and revised on 11/24/2025, and it is valid through 01/31/2029 under CSI section 07 32 16 Concrete Roof Tiles.

The tiles were evaluated as concrete roof tile assemblies. Weather resistance, wind uplift resistance and fire classification were found to comply with IBC Chapter 15 and IRC Chapter 9 for use as a component in a Class A, B or C roof covering.

  • 2024, 2021 and 2018 International Building Code
  • 2024, 2021 and 2018 International Residential Code
  • 2025 and 2022 California Building Code, supplement attached
  • 2025 and 2022 California Residential Code, supplement attached
  • 2023 Florida Building Code, Building, supplement attached
  • 2023 Florida Building Code, Residential, supplement attached

The code sections the report cites are IBC Sections 104.2.3 (104.11 in earlier editions), 1504.3, 1505 and 1507.3, and IRC Sections R104.2.2 (R104.11 in earlier editions), R902 and R905.3.

Fire classification

The tiles and their accessory trim pieces satisfy ASTM C1492 and provide a Class A fire classification under ASTM E108 when tested on combustible decks. Installed on minimum 15/32-inch (12 mm) plywood solid sheathing or on noncombustible decks, the assembly reaches an ASTM E108 Class A rating under IBC Section 1505.2 and IRC Section R902.1. For adhesively attached systems the roof classification follows the adhesive manufacturer's research report.

The substantiating data are test reports from ISO/IEC 17025 laboratories, reports to ASTM C1167 and ASTM E108, and quality control documentation. The tiles are made under a quality control program with periodic inspections supervised by IAPMO UES.

Installation provisions

  • Minimum roof slope: 2½ units vertical in 12 horizontal (21 percent)
  • Anchoring: fasteners complying with IBC Section 1507.3.6 or IRC Section R905.3.7 (R905.3.6 in the 2021 and 2018 IRC)
  • 2024 IBC and IRC: installation to IBC Section 1507.3 and IRC Section R905.3
  • 2021 and 2018 IBC and IRC: installation to Section 1507.3 or R905.3 and the Concrete and Clay Roof Tile Installation Manual dated March 2024 (revised May 2025) from the Tile Roofing Institute Alliance
  • Mortar anchoring: permitted where the building code allows, with the TRI manual (IAPMO UES ER-2015)
  • Adhesive attachment: in accordance with the adhesive manufacturer's research report
  • Underlayment: conforms to IBC Section 1507.1.1 or IRC Section R905.1.1
  • Reroofing, 2024 codes: IBC Section 1512 and IRC Section R908
  • Reroofing, 2021 and 2018 codes: the installation manual for moderate climate regions plus IBC Section 1512 (2021), 1511 (2018) or IRC Section R908

California and Florida supplements

The California supplement recognizes the tiles under the 2025 and 2022 California Building Code and Residential Code. They may be used as a Class A, B or C roof covering system under CBC Section 1505.1.1 or CRC Section R902.1.1. Use in new buildings in any Fire Hazard Severity Zone or Wildland-Urban Interface Fire Area follows Sections 101.3.4, 501.1 and 504 of the CWUIC. Structures regulated by the Division of the State Architect or the Office of Statewide Planning and Development follow CBC Section 1513.

The Florida supplement recognizes the tiles under the 2023 Florida Building Code, Building and Residential. A quality assurance agency audits the manufacturer's program under Section (5)(d) of Florida Rule 61G20-3.008. The FRSA/TRI Florida High Wind installation manual allows tile on a minimum slope of 2 in 12 (1.67 percent) with a sealed roof underlayment system and a code approved adhesive. Reroofing follows Florida Building Code, Building Section 1511. Evaluation to the high-velocity hurricane zone provisions in Section 1512 of the FBC, Building and Chapter 44 of the FBC, Residential is beyond the report's scope.

Production and identification

Double Eagle Ponderosa is made at Rialto and Stockton, California, at Phoenix, Arizona, and at Sumterville, Florida. The Eaglelite version is listed in the California production table only. In the Sumterville table the standard weight is 9.7 psf, the same as at the other plants.

Shipping pallets carry the report holder's name, manufacturing location address, product name, installed weight, shift and date of production, the UES Mark of Conformity and the report number IAPMO UES ER-1900. Tiles made in Sumterville, Florida, are also imprinted with "Florida" on each tile. Eaglelite tiles are produced like the standard tiles except that lightweight aggregates replace sand.

Regional availability

Double Eagle Ponderosa is offered in California, the Intermountain region, Hawaii, the Northwest and Canada.
