Overview

EverGuard PVC Fleece-Back Membrane is a reinforced PVC roofing membrane with a factory-applied polyester fleece backing. It belongs to the GAF EverGuard single-ply family and is made for low-slope commercial roofs in the United States.

The membrane is supplied in nominal thicknesses of 50, 60 and 80 mil and meets ASTM D4434 Type III. The fleece backing means the sheet can be installed over a variety of existing roof systems without a slip sheet. The 10 foot (3.05 m) wide sheets are heat-welded at the seams, and positive bleed-out at the weld gives a visual indication of welding.

Because it is a PVC membrane, it is welded with hot air rather than taped. Heat-welded seams give greater seam strength than taped seams. In a PVC roofing system, the fleece-back sheet is the version used where the membrane is bonded to the substrate with adhesive or low-rise foam.

Construction and thickness

The sheet is a PVC membrane over a polyester scrim with a fleece layer bonded to the underside at the factory. Overall thickness is measured under ASTM D751, and the thickness over the scrim is measured under ASTM D7635.

  • 50 mil: overall thickness 50 mil (1.27 mm), thickness over scrim 21 mil (0.53 mm).
  • 60 mil: overall thickness 60 mil (1.52 mm), thickness over scrim 28 mil (0.71 mm).
  • 80 mil: overall thickness 80 mil (2.03 mm), thickness over scrim 36 mil (0.91 mm).

The ASTM D4434 Type III minimum for overall thickness is 45 mil (1.14 mm), and the minimum for thickness over scrim is 16 mil (0.41 mm).

Roll sizes and weights

The 50 mil and 60 mil sheets come in full rolls 10 feet by 100 feet (3.05 m by 30.48 m). The 80 mil sheet comes in full rolls 10 feet by 80 feet (3.05 m by 24.38 m). Half rolls are 5 feet wide in the same lengths.

  • 50 mil full roll: 318.0 lb (144 kg); half roll 5 feet by 100 feet, 159.0 lb (72 kg).
  • 60 mil full roll: 398.0 lb (181 kg); half roll 5 feet by 100 feet, 199.0 lb (90 kg).
  • 80 mil full roll: 422.0 lb (191 kg); half roll 5 feet by 80 feet, 211.0 lb (96 kg).

Rolls are shipped horizontally on pallets. The 60 mil and 80 mil sheets are stocked in white and gray. The 50 mil sheet and the other colors are special order. Rolls are made at Cedar City, UT.

Colors and reflectance

The membrane is available in White, Gray, Tan and Energy Gray. Cool Roof Rating Council values are published for each color under a separate product ID. The aged values are three-year values, and the Tan, Gray and Energy Gray aged figures are interim laboratory-aged values that simulate naturally aged values.

  • White (0676-0134a): initial solar reflectance 0.87, thermal emittance 0.87, SRI 110; aged solar reflectance 0.70, thermal emittance 0.88, SRI 86.
  • Tan (0676-0168): initial solar reflectance 0.74, thermal emittance 0.88, SRI 91; aged 0.66, 0.88, SRI 80.
  • Gray (0676-0169): initial solar reflectance 0.58, thermal emittance 0.88, SRI 69; aged 0.53, 0.88, SRI 61.
  • Energy Gray (0676-0170): initial solar reflectance 0.75, thermal emittance 0.88, SRI 92; aged 0.67, 0.88, SRI 82.

The white PVC sheet has a highly reflective and emissive surface. The membrane is usable for Title 24, Part 6 cool roof compliance in California.

Physical properties

Published test values for the fleece-back sheet are approximate and carry normal manufacturing variation. MD is machine direction and CD is cross direction.

  • Breaking strength (ASTM D751): 453 lbf (2,015 N) MD and 410 lbf (1,824 N) CD at 50 mil; 515 lbf (2,291 N) MD and 383 lbf (1,704 N) CD at 60 mil; 464 lbf (2,064 N) MD and 408 lbf (1,815 N) CD at 80 mil. The ASTM D4434 minimum is 200 lbf/in. (890 N).
  • Elongation at break (ASTM D751): 30% by 33% at 50 mil; 35% by 35% at 60 mil and 80 mil. The minimum is 15% MD and 15% CD.
  • Factory seam strength (ASTM D751): more than 75% at 50 mil, 85% at 60 mil and 100% at 80 mil. The minimum is 75%.
  • Tear strength (ASTM D751): 111 lbf (494 N) MD and 205 lbf (912 N) CD at 50 mil; 136 lbf (605 N) MD and 167 lbf (743 N) CD at 60 mil; 110 lbf (489 N) MD and 152 lbf (676 N) CD at 80 mil. The minimum is 45 lbf (200.2 N).
  • Breaking strength and elongation at break after heat aging (ASTM D3045): 90% minimum at all three thicknesses.
  • Low-temperature bend (ASTM D2136): pass at -40°F (-40°C) at all three thicknesses.
  • Linear dimensional change (ASTM D1204): less than 0.5% at 50 mil, -0.12% at 60 mil and less than 0.5% at 80 mil. The maximum is 0.5%.

Weathering and fire performance

Xenon arc accelerated weathering (ASTM G155, tested at 0.7 W/m² against a G155 minimum of 0.35 W/m²) exceeds 34,900 hours (88,000 kJ/m²) at all three thicknesses. The ASTM D4434 minimum is 5,000 hours (6,300 kJ/m²).

Fluorescence QUV accelerated weathering (ASTM G154, tested at 1.55 W/m² against a G154 minimum of 0.68 W/m²) exceeds 42,800 hours (239,000 kJ/m²) at all three thicknesses. The minimum is 5,000 hours (12,240 kJ/m²).

In Class A ASTM E108 testing, specific EverGuard PVC roofing assemblies extinguished even when the flame source remained applied to the assembly.

Installation options

Mechanical attachment and adhesion are both used. Adhered applications use EverGuard WB 181 Bonding Adhesive (water based) or hot asphalt.

  • LRF Adhesive O: a low-VOC, low-rise foam for minor surface irregularities, supplied in a cartridge or a 5-gallon container.
  • LRF Adhesive M: a low-rise foam like LRF-O, also used for ISO insulation.
  • GAF LRF Adhesive XF: a two-part, low-VOC low-rise foam that can adhere up to 24 squares of fleece-back membrane when installed in accordance with the GAF application instructions.
  • OlyBond 500 Adhesive Fastener: a two-part, low-VOC low-rise foam that can adhere up to 24 squares of fleece-back membrane when installed in accordance with the GAF application instructions.

Storage is on pallets in a clean, dry area below 100°F (38°C), with no double-stacking. Rolls stay on the pallet until use, in a shaded, ventilated area, covered with a light-colored tarp. Two people at minimum position and install each heavy roll.
