What the boots are and where they are used

Specialty Boots are pipe flashings made by Marco Industries. They seal a pipe where it passes through a roof. The line includes square boots, round boots and extreme angle boots. Each boot has a flexible sleeve that is cut on site to fit the pipe.

Pipe flashings are part of restoring and repairing metal roofs, alongside sealants and fastener replacement. The round and square boots are used for retrofits. The extreme angle boot is used on roofs with a steep pitch.

The line is sold under the heading Flashing. The product family also covers multi-flash, solar, multi-port and other specialty boots. Those boots are available by contacting Marco.

The three versions covered here are listed below.

  • Square boots in three sizes, numbered #1, #2 and #3.
  • Round boots in three sizes.
  • Extreme angle boot in one size.

Square boots and their sizes

Square boots come in three sizes. Each size has a pipe range, a top opening, a cut-to-suit range and a base. The cut-to-suit range matches the pipe range for every size.

  • #1: pipe range 3/4" - 2 3/4" (19-70mm), top opening 3/4" (19mm), cut to suit 3/4" - 2 3/4" (19-70mm), base 6 1/4" (158mm).
  • #2: pipe range 2" - 7 1/4" (50-184mm), top opening 2" (50mm), cut to suit 2" - 7 1/4" (50-184mm), base 10 3/4" (273mm).
  • #3: pipe range 3 1/4" - 10" (95-254mm), top opening 3 1/4" (95mm), cut to suit 3 1/4" - 10" (95-254mm), base 14 1/2" (368mm).

The top opening of each size equals the smallest pipe in its range. The sleeve is trimmed from that opening up to the pipe diameter needed. The #3 boot has the largest base of the three, at 14 1/2" (368mm). The #1 boot has the smallest, at 6 1/4" (158mm).

Square boots are available in black or gray EPDM or silicone. They carry a 20-year warranty. Square boots are used for retrofits.

Round boots and their sizes

Round boots also come in three sizes. Like the square boots, each round size lists a pipe range, a top opening, a cut-to-suit range and a base. Each cut-to-suit range equals its pipe range.

  • Small: pipe range 1/2" - 4" (12-101mm), top opening 1/2" (12mm), cut to suit 1/2" - 4" (12-101mm), base 8 3/16" (205mm).
  • Medium: pipe range 4" - 9 1/4" (101-235mm), top opening 4" (101mm), cut to suit 4" - 9 1/4" (101-235mm), base 14 1/4" (362mm).
  • Large: pipe range 9 1/4" - 16 1/4" (235-412mm), top opening 9 1/4" (235mm), cut to suit 9 1/4" - 16 1/4" (235-412mm), base 21 1/2" (546mm).

The three round pipe ranges run one after another. The first ends at 4" (101mm) where the second begins. The second ends at 9 1/4" (235mm) where the third begins. Together they cover pipes from 1/2" (12mm) to 16 1/4" (412mm).

Round boots are available in black or gray EPDM or silicone. They carry a 20-year warranty on all three sizes. Round boots are used for retrofits.

Extreme angle boot

The extreme angle boot is made for roofs with a steep pitch. It has a built-in 40º pitch. That allows it to handle any extreme roof pitch from 35º to 65º.

  • Pipe range: 1/4" - 5 3/4" (6-146mm).
  • Top opening: closed.
  • Cut to suit pipe size: 1/4" - 5 3/4" (6-146mm).
  • Base: 11" (279mm).
  • Warranty: 20 years.

The top of this boot is closed. The sleeve is cut to open it to the pipe size. The cut-to-suit range is the same as the pipe range, from 1/4" (6mm) to 5 3/4" (146mm).

The extreme angle boot is one size with an 11" (279mm) base. The square and round boots are sold in three sizes each. The extreme angle boot is sold in one.

Materials and what is included

The boot sleeves are made of EPDM or silicone. Square and round boots are available in black or gray in either material. Both materials are made for maximum resistance to weathering from ozone and ultraviolet light. The sleeve is marked so that it can be cut on site to the pipe diameter needed.

The fittings that come with the boot depend on the material.

  • EPDM boots: a plastic zip tie and fastener snaps are included.
  • Silicone boots: an aluminum zip tie and fastener snaps are included.

Every version in the line carries a 20-year warranty. The sleeve is flexible, so one boot size fits a range of pipe diameters rather than a single diameter. A sleeve cut to the pipe size leaves an opening that matches the pipe.

How the boots are installed

Installing a specialty boot takes three steps. Customizing the fit is part of the first step.

  1. Choose the pipe opening and trim the sleeve.
  2. Apply Weather-Tite Metal Roof Sealant, slide the boot over the pipe and form it to the roof profile.
  3. Fasten the boot to the roof with Marco QuikGrip or QuikDrill fasteners to complete the installation.

The sealant goes on before the boot is slid over the pipe. The boot is then formed to the roof profile. The fasteners are the last step and finish the installation.

Marco publishes an installation video for its boots.

Which version suits which job

Each version is made for a different condition on the roof.

  • Square boots, #1 to #3: used for retrofits. The three sizes cover pipes from 3/4" (19mm) to 10" (254mm).
  • Round boots: used for retrofits. The three sizes cover pipes from 1/2" (12mm) to 16 1/4" (412mm), the widest range in the line.
  • Extreme angle boot: used where the roof pitch is extreme, from 35º to 65º. The 40º pitch is built into the boot.

Pipe diameter decides the size. The pipe range of each boot is printed in the size lists above. A pipe at 4" (101mm) or 9 1/4" (235mm) sits at the end of one round range and the start of the next.

The base sizes also differ. Square bases run from 6 1/4" (158mm) to 14 1/2" (368mm). Round bases run from 8 3/16" (205mm) to 21 1/2" (546mm). The extreme angle base is 11" (279mm).

Multi-flash, solar and multi-port boots are separate specialty boots from the same line. Marco supplies those on contact.
