Overview
The Pipe Boot is a prefabricated roof accessory from Portals Plus, made to flash a projection where it passes through a roof system. Each boot has a compression-molded body of 60 mil rubber and is closed around the projection with the Portals Plus Snaplock Clamp. The flange at the base of the boot is attached to the roofing following the roofing membrane manufacturer's specifications.
This page folds three versions into one product: the Small, Medium and Large Pipe Boot. They differ in the diameter of projection each one flashes, in body material and in the colors offered. Small boots serve projections under 3 inches, Medium boots serve projections under 6 inches, and Large boots serve projections from 6 to 12 inches or from 8 to 12 inches, depending on the part.
The Pipe Boot is one of the penetration details used where pipes, conduit and similar projections pass through flat roofing systems. The specification wording for every version reads the same way: the boot is furnished and installed at all points where a projection penetrates the roof system.
Small, Medium and Large versions
The three versions are sorted by the size of the projection:
- Small Pipe Boot: projections less than 3 in. in diameter. Catalog sizes run 1 in. to 3 in.
- Medium Pipe Boot: projections less than 6 in. in diameter. Catalog sizes run 1 in. to 6 in.
- Large Pipe Boot: projections 8 in. to 12 in. in diameter, or 6 in. to 12 in. in diameter for the parts sold as 6-12 in. boots.
The Large version is split into two size ranges. An 8-12 in. boot and a 6-12 in. boot are shown side by side, and the parts table assigns each part number to one range or the other.
Round penetrations smaller than 1 in. in diameter are handled with an accessory rather than with a larger boot. The Small version is paired with Portals Plus Adapter Rings for round penetrations under 1 in. The Medium version uses Portals Plus Adapters for round penetrations under 1 in. and for sealing to square tubing and angle iron.

Installation steps
The Portals Plus installation instructions for the Pipe Boot run in four steps:
- Step 1: Clean and prepare the surface 15 in. in all directions from the penetration. Any special preparation the roofing manufacturer requires is carried out at this point.
- Step 2: Select the proper step of the flashing and cut it off above the index ring. When in doubt, the smaller size is cut. The flange is cleaned and primed in accordance with the roofing manufacturer's recommendations.
- Step 3: Apply the adhesive specified by the roofing manufacturer to the base flange of the boot, place the boot around the projection and complete the attachment of the flashing to the roofing following the roofing manufacturer's specifications.
- Step 4: Using the stainless steel Snaplock Clamp, place the clamp at the top of the boot and tighten it to the projection.
Attachment of every version to the roof system follows the Portals Plus installation instructions and the roofing membrane manufacturer's requirements.
