What the flashing is and where it is used

Pipe-Master is a flexible pipe flashing made by Triangle Fastener Corporation. The cone is flexible, weather resistant EPDM rubber or silicone. The base is aluminum and is flexible, so it conforms to any panel profile.

The flashing seals a pipe where it passes through a metal roof panel. That makes it a standard part of restoring and repairing metal roofs, alongside sealants and fastener replacement. The cone fits over the pipe and the base is fastened and sealed to the panel.

Gray EPDM is ozone and ultraviolet resistant. The product is made in Mexico. Related versions cover pipes that are already in place, wall penetrations and oversized holes.

Standard sizes and part numbers

Ten flash numbers cover pipes from 1/4" to 24" outside diameter. Each size lists its top opening diameter, overall height, base diameter, TFC part number and fastener count.

  • #1: pipe 1/4" - 2 1/2", EPDM. Top closed, height 2.77", base 4.75". Part 001DEKR. 10 fasteners.
  • #2: pipe 1 3/4" - 3", EPDM. Top opening 1.44", height 3.53", base 6.21". Part 002DEKR. 13 fasteners.
  • #3: pipe 1/4" - 5", EPDM or silicone. Top closed, height 3.64", base 7.74". Parts 003DEKR and 003DEKS. 16 fasteners.
  • #4: pipe 3" - 6 1/4", EPDM. Top opening 2.38", height 5.05", base 9.26". Part 004DEKR. 19 fasteners.
  • #5: pipe 4 1/4" - 7 3/4", EPDM or silicone. Top opening 3.50", height 4.43", base 10.75". Parts 005DEKR and 005DEKS. 22 fasteners.
  • #6: pipe 5" - 9", EPDM. Top opening 4.25", height 5.60", base 12.50". Part 006DEKR. 26 fasteners.
  • #7: pipe 6" - 11", EPDM. Top opening 4.90", height 5.84", base 14.60". Part 007DEKR. 30 fasteners.
  • #8: pipe 7" - 13", EPDM or silicone. Top opening 5.80", height 7.53", base 16.5". Parts 008DEKR and 008DEKS. 35 fasteners.
  • #9: pipe 9" - 19", EPDM or silicone. Top opening 7.45", height 8.09", base 25.25". Parts 009DEKR and 009DEKS. 54 fasteners.
  • #10: pipe 15" - 24", EPDM, square base only. Part 010DEKRSQ. 148 fasteners.

In the part numbers, the R suffix marks EPDM and the S suffix marks silicone.

Closed tops and steep or ribbed roofs

Sizes #1 and #3 are closed top. The #3 closed top reaches pipe diameters from 1/4" to 4" in the color range, and the size list gives 1/4" to 5" for the same flash number.

A steep pitch roof greater than 20 degrees needs the next larger flashing for increased flexibility. A profile with a rib height of 1-1/2" or more also needs the next larger flashing.

Flashings are packed by the box. Box quantity is 30 pieces for the mini size, 15 pieces each for #1, #2 and #3, 10 pieces each for #4, #5, #6 and #7, and 5 pieces each for #8, #9 and the maxi size.

EPDM and silicone materials

EPDM is the standard compound. Silicone is offered in sizes #3, #5, #8 and #9. Both compounds are tested for ozone resistance at 70 hours at 500 pphm.

  • High temperature, continuous: EPDM +100 C (212 F). Silicone +225 C (+437 F).
  • Compression set, maximum: EPDM 25%. Silicone 50%.
  • EPDM tensile strength, minimum: 10 MPa (1450 psi).

The EPDM engineering specification is ASTM D2000 M3 BA510 A14 B13 C12 F17 Z1 Z2 Z3 Z4 Z5 Z6 Z7. Hardness is 50 durometer as the range and 55 as the specific target. Heat aging runs 70 hours at 100 C. Compression set is measured over 22 hours at 70 C with a 25% maximum under ASTM D395B. Ozone resistance is 70 hours at 50 pphm under ASTM D1171. Low temperature brittleness passes 3 minutes at -40 C under ASTM D2137.

The silicone engineering specification is ASTM D2000 M4 GE 505 A19 B37 C12 F19 G11 Z1 Z2 Z3 Z4. Silicone hardness has the same 50 range and 55 target. Heat aging runs 70 hours at 225 C, with a maximum hardness change of +10 points and a maximum tensile and ultimate elongation change of -30%. Compression set is measured over 22 hours at 175 C with a 50% maximum. Volume swell is 80% maximum. Low temperature brittleness passes 3 minutes at -40 C.

Both compounds carry a horizontal flame resistance rating under UL 94 of not more than 3" per minute.

Colors

The standard flashing is available in 11 colors: brown, black, dark gray, light gray, white, dark green, light green, dark blue, light blue, bright red and terra cotta. Sizes #3 and #5 in EPDM cover pipe diameters of 1/4" to 4" and 4 1/4" to 7 3/4" in the color range.

Dark and light gray EPDM are the gray compounds. Resistance to discoloration under ASTM D1148 applies to gray EPDM only.

Fasteners and sealant

Corrosion resistant fasteners go around the base, one every 1-1/2 inches, as per the United Plumbing Code (UPC) recommendations. The fastener count for each size is in the size list above. The fastener named for the base is the 1/4-14 x 1-1/8" DP1 BLAZER Stainless Cap Head with VRT Technology.

Ultra 1000 or APS 500 sealant goes under the base for a proper seal. Additional sealant can be applied around the base after installation.

The same fastener and sealant pairing applies to the Fix-A-Flash oversized version.

Retrofit, low profile and oversized versions

Retrofit flashing is sold in three sizes. Each size comes in black EPDM, gray EPDM and silicone.

  • #1: pipe 3/4" - 2-3/4", opening diameter 3/4", base 6-3/10". Parts Black RF 101 BS, Gray RF 101 GS, Silicone RF 102 RD.
  • #2: pipe 2" - 7-1/4", opening diameter 2", base 10-3/4". Parts Black RF 201 BS, Gray RF 201 GS, Silicone RF 202 RD.
  • #3: pipe 3-1/4" - 10", opening diameter 3-1/4", base 14-1/2". Parts Black RF 301 BS, Gray RF 301 GS, Silicone RF 302 RD.

Low profile flashing is made for sidewall and low profile applications. It fits pipes up to 4". The top is closed, with an opening range of 0" to 4". Overall height is 3/8" and the base is 6-1/4". Parts are LP101BA in black EPDM, LP101GA in light gray EPDM, LP101NG in dark gray EPDM and LP102WT in FDA white silicone. It seals wall and roof penetrations in drywall, stucco wall and corrugated metal siding. It carries a 20 year warranty and comes in 13 colors.

Fix-A-Flash is the oversized version. It has a 19 1/2" square base, takes pipe up to 15" in diameter and flashes holes up to 16" wide. It is made of EPDM or silicone and carries a 20 year warranty.
