What RidgeLine is and where it is used

RidgeLine is an insulated standing-seam roof panel made by Green Span Profiles. It is an exterior standing-seam roof panel, so it is used on insulated metal panel roofs and walls projects where the roof itself is the insulated assembly.

The panel has a patented tee-seam. The tee-seam lets installers slide the panels together rather than lifting or rolling them into place. The U.S. patent number is 9,206,606 B2.

The interior tongue-and-groove joint works together with a factory-caulked batten. Together they give a double layer of weather-tight protection. The minimum slope is ½ : 12.

Versions and sizes

Every RidgeLine panel has one coverage width, and the thickness and gauge are chosen per job. The sizes are:

  • Coverage width: 42-inch.
  • Thickness: 2.5, 3, 4, 5 and 6-inch.
  • Length: 12'-0" to 53'-0".
  • Exterior gauge: 26, 24 and 22.
  • Interior gauge: 26.

The section drawing marks the thickness range as 2.5" to 6" and the coverage as 42". The exterior face is smooth. The interior face is embossed or smooth.

Materials and finishes

The exterior substrate is Galvalume. The interior substrate is Galvalume or stainless steel. Both facers are steel, so the panel is a steel-faced sandwich around an insulating core.

  • Exterior finish: siliconized polyester or standard gloss PVDF.
  • Interior finish: polyester, siliconized polyester or plastisol (PVC).
  • Exterior texture: smooth.
  • Interior texture: embossed or smooth.

The core is continuously poured-in-place polyisocyanurate insulating foam. The nominal R-value is R-8 per inch of thickness. K-factor is 0.139 BTU-in/hr-ft² -F° at 75° mean and 0.129 BTU-in/hr-ft² -F° at 35° mean, tested to ASTM C518.

Joints and panel profile

The exterior joint is a 2"-tall, tee-shaped vertical rib with a mechanically seamed batten. The rib stands above the flat of the panel and carries the seam on the roof surface.

The interior joint is the Green-Lock, an offset tongue-and-groove. The batten is caulked at the factory. On the section drawing, a clip sits under the tee rib and a fastener runs through the interior joint into the support.

The panel is made in one 42-inch coverage width. Pairs of panels slide together at the tee-seam, and the seam is closed with the batten.

Panel weights

Panel weight depends on thickness and on the facer and liner gauge. The table below gives weights in pounds per square foot (psf) for the 42-inch width. The gauge pair is facer/liner.

  • 2.5-inch thick: 2.21 psf at 26/26, 2.42 at 24/26, 2.74 at 22/26, 2.41 at 26/24, 2.62 at 24/24, 2.94 at 22/24, 2.72 at 26/22, 2.93 at 24/22 and 3.25 at 22/22.
  • 3-inch thick: 2.31 psf at 26/26, 2.52 at 24/26, 2.84 at 22/26, 2.52 at 26/24, 2.73 at 24/24, 3.05 at 22/24, 2.83 at 26/22, 3.04 at 24/22 and 3.36 at 22/22.
  • 4-inch thick: 2.52 psf at 26/26, 2.73 at 24/26, 3.05 at 22/26, 2.72 at 26/24, 2.94 at 24/24, 3.26 at 22/24, 3.03 at 26/22, 3.25 at 24/22 and 3.57 at 22/22.
  • 5-inch thick: 2.73 psf at 26/26, 2.94 at 24/26, 3.26 at 22/26, 2.93 at 26/24, 3.15 at 24/24, 3.46 at 22/24, 3.24 at 26/22, 3.45 at 24/22 and 3.77 at 22/22.
  • 6-inch thick: 2.94 psf at 26/26, 3.15 at 24/26, 3.47 at 22/26, 3.14 at 26/24, 3.35 at 24/24, 3.67 at 22/24, 3.45 at 26/22, 3.66 at 24/22 and 3.98 at 22/22.

Test results

The panel is tested for air, water, fire, foam strength and bond strength.

  • Air leakage (ASTM E1680): 0.001-cfm/sf at 12-psf.
  • Water penetration (ASTM E1646): zero penetration at 12-psf.
  • Surface burning (ASTM E84): flame spread under 25 and smoke developed under 450.
  • Foam shear strength (ASTM C273): 16-psi.
  • Foam compressive strength (ASTM D1621): 18-psi.
  • Foam apparent density (ASTM D1622): 2.25-pcf.
  • Foam tensile strength (ASTM D1623): 21-psi.
  • Closed cells (ASTM D6226): at least 90%.

Bond strength tests cover fatigue, freeze/heat, humidity and autoclave exposure. Fatigue endurance is 2,000,000 alternating cycles of L/180 deflection, with no facer or liner delamination, foam core fracture or permanent set. The freeze/heat test is twenty-one eight-hour cycles from –20° F to 180° F, with no delamination, blistering or permanent set. Humidity endurance is 1,200 hours of 93% humidity at 158° F, with no delamination, blistering or interface corrosion. The autoclave test is exposure to 218° F and a pressure of 2-psig for 2½ hours, with no facer or liner delamination.

Approvals and ratings

RidgeLine carries these approvals and ratings:

  • Miami-Dade County Notice of Acceptance, tested to the Florida Building Code impact procedure TAS 201.
  • State of Florida Product Approval.
  • Underwriters Laboratories Roof Deck Construction, Class 90.
  • FM Class 1 approval for panel roofs (FM 4471).
  • Class 1 fire rating under FM 4880.

The panel is also tested to FM 4771 for Class 1 panel roofs. Structural performance is tested to ASTM E1592 and ASTM E72, and the results are in the load tables.

What each version is for

The 42-inch coverage width is the only width. Thickness sets the insulation value, because R-8 applies per inch of thickness. A 2.5-inch panel gives about 2.5 times the R-8 figure, and a 6-inch panel gives six times it.

Gauge sets weight and steel thickness. The 26-gauge exterior is the lightest, at 2.21 psf in 2.5-inch thickness with a 26-gauge interior. The 22-gauge exterior with a 22/22 pairing is the heaviest of the listed 42-inch combinations, at 3.98 psf in 6-inch thickness.

Finish sets the look and coating. Siliconized polyester and standard gloss PVDF are the exterior choices. A stainless steel interior substrate is the alternative to Galvalume inside.
