What ShadowLine is

ShadowLine is an insulated metal wall panel made by Green Span Profiles. It is built for exterior walls and is used on commercial, industrial, low-temperature and cold storage buildings. It belongs to the family of insulated metal panel roofs and walls.

Five flutes, each ¼" deep, run along the exterior face. A 1¼" reveal hides the side joint. The result is an aesthetic, monolithic look.

The Green-Lock side joint gives a high-performance vapor seal. The core is continuously poured-in-place polyisocyanurate insulating foam, bonded between a steel exterior facer and a steel interior liner.

Sizes and versions

One panel width is made. Each panel covers 42 inches of wall. Thickness, length and steel gauge vary by version.

  • Coverage width: 42-inch
  • Thickness: 2, 2.5, 3, 4, 5, 6 or 8-inch
  • Length: 8'-0" to 75'-0"
  • Exterior gauge: 26, 24 or 22
  • Interior gauge: 26

The exterior face comes in three gauges. The interior liner is 26 gauge. A thicker panel carries more foam between the two steel faces, and the profile depth runs from 2 inches to 8 inches across the range.

Materials, finishes and textures

The exterior substrate is Galvalume. The interior substrate is Galvalume or stainless steel.

  • Exterior finish: siliconized polyester or low-gloss PVDF
  • Interior finish: polyester, siliconized polyester or plastisol (PVC)
  • Exterior texture: embossed or smooth
  • Interior texture: embossed or smooth

The joint is a Green-Lock offset double tongue-and-groove. The 1¼" reveal covers this joint.

Insulation and thermal tests

The foam core tested at 90% or more closed cells (ASTM D6226). Apparent density is 2.25 pcf (ASTM D1622).

Thermal transmission by the heat flow meter method (ASTM C518) gave a K-factor of 0.139 BTU-in/hr-ft²-F° at 75° mean and 0.129 BTU-in/hr-ft²-F° at 35° mean.

Air leakage (ASTM E283) measured 0.0011 cfm/sf at 20 psf. Water penetration (ASTM E331) was zero at 20 psf.

Core strength and bond tests

Core strength results for the foam:

  • Shear strength: 16 psi (ASTM C273)
  • Compressive strength: 18 psi (ASTM D1621)
  • Tensile strength: 21 psi (ASTM D1623)

Each of these figures is for the foam core alone. Bond between the foam and the steel faces was tested four ways.

  • Fatigue endurance: 2,000,000 alternating cycles of L/180 deflection left no facer or liner delamination, no fracture of the foam core and no permanent set.
  • Freeze/heat cycle: twenty-one 8-hour cycles from –20° F to 180° F left no delamination, blistering or permanent set.
  • Humidity endurance: 1,200 hours at 93% humidity and 158° F left no delamination, blistering or interface corrosion.
  • Autoclave: 2½ hours at 218° F and 2 psig left no facer or liner delamination.

Structural performance is tested to ASTM E1592 and ASTM E72, and the results are published as load tables.

Fire, impact and approvals

Surface burning (ASTM E84) gave a flame spread under 25 and smoke developed under 450. The panel passed NFPA 285 for exterior non-load-bearing wall assemblies containing combustible components. It is Class 1 fire rated under FM 4880.

Approvals issued for ShadowLine itself:

  • FM Class 1 approval for exterior wall systems (FM 4881)
  • Miami-Dade County Notice of Acceptance, with impact testing to TAS 201
  • Florida Product Approval

Panel weights

Panel weight depends on thickness and on the gauge of the facer and liner. The weights below are for the 42-inch width, in pounds per square foot (psf).

  • 2-inch panel, 26/26 gauge: 2.10 psf
  • 2-inch panel, 24/26 gauge: 2.32 psf
  • 2-inch panel, 22/22 gauge: 3.15 psf
  • 4-inch panel, 26/26 gauge: 2.52 psf
  • 4-inch panel, 22/22 gauge: 3.57 psf
  • 8-inch panel, 26/26 gauge: 3.36 psf
  • 8-inch panel, 22/22 gauge: 4.39 psf
  • 3-inch panel, 24/26 gauge: 2.52 psf
  • 3-inch panel, 22/22 gauge: 3.36 psf
  • 5-inch panel, 24/24 gauge: 3.15 psf
  • 5-inch panel, 22/22 gauge: 3.77 psf
  • 6-inch panel, 26/24 gauge: 3.14 psf
  • 6-inch panel, 22/22 gauge: 3.98 psf
  • 2.5-inch panel, 24/24 gauge: 2.62 psf
  • 2.5-inch panel, 22/22 gauge: 3.25 psf
  • 4-inch panel, 24/24 gauge: 2.94 psf
  • 8-inch panel, 24/24 gauge: 3.76 psf

The lightest 42-inch panel is the 2-inch 26/26 version at 2.10 psf. The heaviest is the 8-inch 22/22 version at 4.39 psf. Gauge pairs are written as facer gauge first, then liner gauge.

Versions at a glance

ShadowLine goes on exterior walls. It is not a roof panel.

Each version is set by four choices: thickness, exterior gauge, interior substrate and finish.

  • Thickness: 2, 2.5, 3, 4, 5, 6 or 8-inch.
  • Exterior gauge: 26, 24 or 22, always with a 26 gauge interior liner.
  • Interior substrate: Galvalume or stainless steel.
  • Exterior finish: siliconized polyester or low-gloss PVDF.
  • Interior finish: polyester, siliconized polyester or plastisol (PVC).

Texture is a further choice. Smooth or embossed can be set for either face. The five flutes and the 1¼" reveal are the same on every version. Lengths run from 8'-0" to 75'-0" and the coverage width stays at 42 inches.

The 2.5-inch panel at 26/26 gauge weighs 2.21 psf. The 3-inch panel weighs 2.31 psf. The 5-inch panel weighs 2.73 psf. The 6-inch panel weighs 2.94 psf. Each figure is for the 42-inch width.
