Overview
QuadCore KS Shadowline is an insulated wall and ceiling panel in the Kingspan KS Series, used in cold storage and controlled-environment construction. It is made for both interior and exterior wall applications, and the QuadCore insulation core sits between two steel facers that both carry the Shadowline profile. Recorded uses include cold storage, food processing, food and life science, pharmaceutical and biotechnology laboratories, and research and advanced technology facilities.
KS Shadowline is offered in four module widths, 24, 30, 36 and 42 inches. It uses the KS joint, which forms a vapor barrier in enclosures of any size, and its non-porous surface aids cleaning and resists bacterial growth.
Panel specification
- Insulation core: QuadCore Technology
- Profile: Shadowline on the exterior face and Shadowline on the interior face
- Embossing: stucco or non-embossed on both faces
- Gauge: 26, 24 or 22 ga on each face
- Width: 24, 30, 36 or 42 inches, with 42 inches the standard coverage
- Thickness: 2, 2.5, 3, 4, 5 or 6 inches
- Length: 8 feet to 53 feet
- Orientation: vertical or horizontal
The standard reveal is 1/8 inch or 3/8 inch for vertical panels and 3/8 inch for horizontal panels. For horizontal runs the 3/8 inch reveal is the standard, and a 1/8 inch reveal is available with exterior joint sealant.

Thermal performance
The core measures about R-8 per inch at a mean temperature of 75 degrees F and about R-9 per inch at 35 degrees F, from ASTM C518 testing. Published panel values rise in step with thickness.
- 2 inches: R-18 at 35 degrees F and R-16 at 75 degrees F
- 2.5 inches: R-22.5 and R-20
- 3 inches: R-27 and R-24
- 4 inches: R-36 and R-32
- 5 inches: R-45 and R-40
- 6 inches: R-54 and R-48
Weight by panel width
Panel weights in pounds per square foot fall as the module widens. The KS Series weight table, shared with the Azteco, Mini-Wave, Micro-Rib and Mini Micro-Rib profiles, lists these values for Shadowline at the lightest combination, 26 ga on both faces, and the heaviest, 22 ga on both faces.
- 24 inch width, 2 inches thick: 2.35 lb/sq ft with 26 ga on both faces and 3.51 with 22 ga on both faces; 6 inches thick: 3.15 and 4.31
- 30 inch width, 2 inches thick: 2.29 and 3.42; 6 inches thick: 3.09 and 4.22
- 36 inch width, 2 inches thick: 2.25 and 3.35; 6 inches thick: 3.05 and 4.15
- 42 inch width, 2 inches thick: 2.22 and 3.31; 6 inches thick: 3.02 and 4.11
For the 24 inch width at 3 inches thick the intermediate gauge pairings run 2.85 lb/sq ft with a 24 ga exterior and 26 ga interior, 3.13 with 24 ga on both faces, 3.16 with a 22 ga exterior and 26 ga interior, and 3.44 with a 22 ga exterior and 24 ga interior.
Fire and structural results
- FM 4880: Class 1 fire rating of building panels or interior finish materials
- FM 4882: smoke sensitive occupancies, interior and exterior use
- FM 4881: passed, with complete wind pressure ratings on ApprovalGuide.com
- ASTM E84: flame spread 25 or less, smoke developed 90 or less
- CAN/ULC-S101: fire endurance of 10 minutes, with fastener conditions depending on panel thickness
- CAN/ULC-S102: flame spread 20, smoke developed 45 for the panel insulation core
- CAN/ULC S138: passed, fire growth of foamed plastic insulated building panels in a full scale room configuration
- CAN/ULC-S134: passed, fire test of exterior wall assemblies
- ASTM E72: vacuum chamber tested
These results apply to thicknesses of 2 to 6 inches, widths of 24 to 42 inches, a minimum panel length of 8 feet and minimum facer gauges of 26 ga outside and 26 ga inside. FM compliance depends on installation to the FM installation specifications on ApprovalGuide.com.
Allowable load and span
KS Shadowline shares its span table with KS Flat. The values are for negative uniform loads on a single span at a 42 inch panel width and an interior design load of plus or minus 5 psf, at L/180 and L/120 deflection, with six facer gauge pairings and temperature differentials of 50, 75 and 100 degrees F.
With 26 ga on both faces and no temperature differential, a 3 inch panel spans 24 feet 8 inches at L/180 and 28 feet 1 inch at L/120, and a 5 inch panel spans 35 feet and 36 feet 8 inches. At a 50 degree F differential the 4 inch panel spans 22 feet 11 inches and 28 feet 7 inches, at 75 degrees F it spans 19 feet 10 inches and 25 feet 7 inches, and at 100 degrees F it spans 17 feet 1 inch and 22 feet 11 inches.
Moving to a 24 ga exterior with a 26 ga interior lifts the no-differential spans of a 6 inch panel to 40 feet 4 inches at both deflection limits, against 39 feet 6 inches and 40 feet 3 inches with 26 ga on both faces.
Colors and facings
The standard finish is Imperial White. The Sherwin-Williams WeatherXL siliconized modified polyester standard colors, with solar reflectance (SR), emissivity (E) and solar reflective index (SRI), are as follows.
- Imperial White: SR 0.62, E 0.86, SRI 74
- Driftwood: SR 0.55, E 0.86, SRI 64
- Sandstone: SR 0.49, E 0.86, SRI 56
- Surrey Beige: SR 0.41, E 0.86, SRI 45
A custom color can be selected. For interior heavy washdown areas, plastisol (PVC) coatings and stainless steel facings are available, for interior use only. CLEAN safe 120 coating is also available for protection against corrosion.
Cold storage detail set
The KS Series cold storage vertical CAD detail set is organized by condition: panel profiles, expanded and engaged joints, standard fastening, fastening patterns 1A through 8A and 1B through 5B, girt clip section, thermal cuts at the joint and in the field, joint fastening to steel framing, hat channel on masonry and masonry, and base details at insulated slab base channels, slab Z angles, partitions, curbs and thermal breaks.
The set continues with partition connections to floor and roof, outside and inside corners with flat or profiled trim, framed openings at head, jamb and sill, stack joints, rakes against a membrane roof, low and high eaves, and ceiling details covering channel, tee, seismic or lateral brace plate, and hidden clips. A drawing note adds that cold storage buildings generally need the primary vapor barrier on the exterior, or warm, side of the panel, and that structural supports are not supplied by Kingspan.
Warranty and certification
The QuadCore 30-year limited thermal warranty runs for thirty years from the date of sale by Kingspan Insulated Panels Inc., or Kingspan Insulated Panels Ltd. for projects in Canada. It holds the foam R-value to within 10 percent of the average published for the panel at the sale date, and applies to purchases on or after June 1, 2018. It is available only on QuadCore-equipped panels.
UL GREENGUARD Gold certification to UL 2818 covers Kingspan insulated wall and roof panel systems (certificate 86747-420). The panel belongs with other insulated metal panels in the Kingspan controlled environment range, next to KS Flat, KS Azteco and KS Micro-Rib.
