Overview

Seal-Tite Gold Industrial Gutter is a roof-edge gutter from Metal-Era's Seal-Tite family. It is sold as the IGG-1, IGG-2, IGG-3 and IGG-B versions, and this page covers the IGG-B version, with the other three named where their drawings differ. The gutter is supplied in 12-foot lengths with pre-punched holes, and each fastening hole is slotted so the metal can move with thermal expansion and contraction.

The system is held by two kinds of strap. A 2-inch-wide external wind strap goes on every 6 feet, and gutter hangers sit every 24 inches on center between the wind straps, against a standard hanger spacing of 30 inches on center. The wind straps are designed to meet the ANSI/SPRI GT-1 design standard. The heavy aluminum gutter strap design removes the need for drilling and riveting, and the free-floating, hook-in strap allows full thermal movement of the gutter.

Factory-fabricated miters come as standard, which removes field fabrication at corners. All gutter straps are supplied with the product. An optional roof flange or slotted drain bars can be added for ballast retention, and the gutter adapts to optional drainage bars or flow-through gravel stops. On a low-slope roof, the gutter is one of the components that carry water off the edge and sit alongside the membrane, as in commercial gutter and drainage systems.

Versions and gutter sizes

The IGG-B version is made in four sizes, C6 to C9, named for the dimension C. The product IDs are IGGB-C6, IGGB-C7, IGGB-C8 and IGGB-C9.

  • C6: C is 6 in., B is 4 1/8 in., A is 4 1/2 in.
  • C7: C is 7 in., B is 6 in., A is 6 in.
  • C8: C is 8 in., B is 7 in., A is 7 in.
  • C9: C is 9 in., B is 8 in., A is 8 in.

On the IGG-B drawing the maximum downspout dimension must not exceed B minus 9/16 in.

The IGG-1 version has its own table, with a second width dimension. Its product IDs are IGG1-C6 to IGG1-C9:

  • IGG1-C6: C is 6 in., B1 is 4 3/4 in., B2 is 3 3/4 in., A is 4 1/2 in.
  • IGG1-C7: C is 7 in., B1 is 6 in., B2 is 5 in., A is 6 in.
  • IGG1-C8: C is 8 in., B1 is 7 in., B2 is 6 in., A is 7 in.
  • IGG1-C9: C is 9 in., B1 is 8 in., B2 is 7 in., A is 8 in.

On the IGG-1 drawing the maximum downspout dimension must not exceed B2 minus 9/16 in. Both profiles carry a 3-in. dimension on the inner leg. Separate print approvals are published for IGG-1, IGG-2, IGG-3 and IGG-B.

Materials, finishes and colors

The gutter is manufactured in 24-gauge steel and in .040-, .050- and .063-inch aluminum. The order form for the IGG-B version offers 24-gauge galvanized steel, .040-in. aluminum, .050-in. aluminum and .063-in. aluminum, with color and finish entered separately. The wind strap is 24-gauge galvanized steel or .040-in. aluminum, 2 in. wide.

For Seal-Tite Gold Industrial Gutter, coil-coated standard colors carry a 30-year Kynar 500 finish warranty. Custom post-coated Kynar 500 colors carry an included 10-year Kynar 500 finish warranty, and a 20-year warranty is available on request. Anodized finishes carry a 5-year warranty. Coil anodized finishing has no warranty, and post-coat Class 1 batch anodizing is available with a 5-year warranty that can be raised to 10 years for an upcharge.

Express colors are offered in 24-gauge, .040-in. and .050-in. only. Specially fabricated products are available for individual project needs.

Wind testing

The gutter is tested to comply with ANSI/SPRI GT-1, the standard for gutter systems. Two tested loads apply by material:

  • 24-gauge and .040-in. material: tested at 150 lbs per sq ft.
  • .050-in. and .063-in. material: tested at 210 lbs per sq ft.

The same loads are printed on the IGG-1 and IGG-B drawings. For FM approval, either a termination bar, a gravel stop or a drip edge is required.

Fasteners, straps and parts supplied

The IGG-B gutter is provided with these parts:

  • #10 x 2 in. stainless steel fasteners, which hold the hangers and the optional gutter flange.
  • Pre-slotted holes in the gutter hanger.
  • 5/32 x 1/2 in. holes at 12 in. on center in the gutter, with 1 1/4 in. galvanized roofing nails.
  • #14 x 2 in. metal, wood and masonry screws.
  • Zip screws.
  • 6-in.-wide splice plates.
  • 1/8-in. stainless steel pop rivets.

The wind strap is 2 in. wide at 6 ft. 0 in. on center, and the hangers fall 24 in. on center between wind straps. The drawing also marks a flange length and a flange angle for the optional gutter flange.

Miters are furnished with a non-penetrating quicklock joint and are then factory sealed watertight, unless noted otherwise. On Seal-Tite Gold Industrial Gutter, welded accessories need a minimum material thickness of .050 in. Non-90-degree miters have their own print approval, 11012-10010.

Installation sequence

The Seal-Tite Gold installation instructions for the IGG-1, IGG-2, IGG-3 and IGG-B versions with wind straps run to ten steps.

  1. Membrane installation. The primary roof material manufacturer's recommendations and the architect's details are followed for installing the roof membrane with the gutter system.
  2. Wind straps. The first wind strap is fastened to the wall 7 in. on center from the corner with the provided 14 x 2 in. Profiler screws and fender washers. Straps continue at 6 ft. 0 in. on center.
  3. Miters. Miters go in at the locations on the plans, and the wind straps wrap around them. Each miter is fastened to the nailer through pre-slotted holes with the provided 1 1/4 in. galvanized roofing nails. A heavy bead of non-curing sealant goes on the inside of each miter end.
  4. Miter wind straps. The wind straps wrap around the top of the gutter and are fastened to it with the provided #10 x 2 in. stainless steel fasteners and zip screws.
  5. Gutter. Sections are installed from right to left as seen from the roof. A heavy bead of non-curing sealant goes along the inside length of the gutter, with a 3/8 in. gap left at the splice joint. A 6-in.-wide splice plate is placed at the joint and the sections are riveted with the provided 1/8 in. stainless steel pop rivets at 2 in. on center. The gutter is nailed to the nailer at 12 in. on center with the provided 1 1/4 in. ring shank roofing nails. EPDM butyl pressure-sensitive tape is recommended, centered over the splice plate and lapping the gutter sections a minimum of 1 in.
  6. Wind straps. Gutter installation and the fastening of wind straps to the gutter continue.
  7. Gutter hangers. Each hanger hooks under the leading edge of the gutter and rotates into place. Hangers are fastened 24 in. on center with the provided #10 x 2 in. stainless steel fasteners through the back side of the gutter into the wood nailer.
  8. Expansion joint installation, where necessary. Expansion joints go in at the locations specified on the roof plans or at a maximum of 48 ft. 0 in., and are nailed into place as in step 5.
  9. Outlet installation. Outlet locations are determined and the hole is field cut. The aluminum outlet is inserted, fastened with provided stainless steel pop rivets at 2 in. on center and sealed with non-curing sealant.
  10. End cap installation. Endcaps go in at all terminations, are field riveted with provided stainless steel pop rivets at 2 in. on center and are sealed with non-curing sealant.

Expansion joints

Two expansion joint styles are offered on the order form: Style 1, a SMACNA design, and Style 2, a free-flow design. An expansion joint is assembled in five stages. A 12-ft. 0 in. section of gutter is cut into two 6-ft. 0 in. pieces, and the expansion joint is made to fit between them.

The first gutter section slides over the expansion plate until its lead edge meets the neoprene insert, after a heavy bead of non-curing sealant is applied to the inside of the section. The neoprene center section is 0.15 thick and is factory bonded to .048-in. aluminum. The cover plate slides over the expansion plate and gutter section past the joint, and the second gutter section goes on the same way, meeting the neoprene insert and being riveted. When both gutters are in place, the cover plate slides until it is centered over the joint. The cover plate may be pop riveted to the expansion plate and gutter on one side only, to permit expansion.

30-year, 160 mph wind warranty

A 30-year, 160 mph Seal-Tite Gutter System wind warranty is available on orders that meet a project specification. The warranty form covers Seal-Tite WR Gutter, Seal-Tite Gold Industrial Gutter and Seal-Tite XL Gutter. Metal-Era warrants, for thirty years from the date of final acceptance, to replace or repair the portion of the gutter system that fails because of a defect in Metal-Era supplied materials. The repair or replacement obligation is limited to the owner's original cost of the system.

The terms include:

  • All accessories must be manufactured by Metal-Era.
  • The owner gives written notice within thirty days of discovering a failure.
  • The warranty does not apply where wind exceeds 160 miles per hour or damage comes from flying debris or natural disasters.
  • It does not apply where the wood nailer substrate or other approved attachment member separates from the building.
  • It does not apply where metal work or other material not furnished by Metal-Era is used in the system.
  • It does not apply where installation departs from Metal-Era's specifications and printed installation instructions.

The finish warranties described earlier are separate.
