What Snap Lock is
Snap Lock 1 1/2" is a standing seam metal roof panel from Fasteel Metal Roof Solutions. The panel has an ultra-thin rib profile and hidden fasteners. It belongs to the standing seam family; the standing seam metal roofing page covers the wider system, including clips.
The seam snaps together without mechanical seaming. No seaming tool is part of the process. Fasteel also makes a mechanically seamed standing seam panel with 1", 1 1/2" and 2" seam heights. Snap Lock is the version whose seam closes by snapping.
Fasteel lists Snap Lock for commercial, residential and industrial roofing among its metal panels. The panel is a roof panel attached to solid substrates such as plywood or metal decking. Its rib profile is ultra-thin, and the fasteners stay hidden under the seam.
Sizes and profile
The panel is sold in one standard size, 1 1/2". That figure is the nominal seam height. The cross-section drawing marks the 1 1/2" height at the raised seam and the 17" width across the flat of the panel.
- Nominal seam height: 1.5"
- Standard panel width: 17"
- Minimum slope: 3:12
- Surface: smooth, 2 ribs, or striations
The profile has a flat pan with a short return at one edge and a raised, hooked leg at the other. The 3:12 minimum slope is the same as the Nail Strip panel and is steeper than the 2:12 minimum of the mechanically seamed Standing Seam panel.
The panel is attached to solid substrates like plywood or metal decking, and the seam height stays at 1.5" on every version. Both the 26 Ga and the 24 Ga gauge keep the 17" width.
The 17" standard panel width is shared with the Standing Seam panel, which is listed at 17" and 18".

Surface patterns
Three surface options are offered for the 1 1/2" Snap Lock panel: smooth, 2 ribs, or striations. The choice changes the look of the flat pan between the seams. Each option is available in the same 17" width and 1.5" seam height.
The Nail Strip and Standing Seam panels carry the same three surface options. The soffit panel also offers smooth, 2 ribs, or striations.
Materials, coatings and colors
Snap Lock is made in 26 Ga and 24 Ga steel with several coating and finish choices. The available combinations are listed below.
- Acrylic Coated Galvalume: 26 Ga and 24 Ga
- Paint Grip: 26 Ga and 24 Ga
- SMP Color Finish: 26 Ga
- Kynar 500 Color Finish: 24 Ga
Acrylic coated Galvalume and Paint Grip are offered in both gauges. SMP color finish is offered only in the lighter 26 Ga. Kynar 500 color finish is offered only in the heavier 24 Ga.
Fasteel also lists copper and aluminum for the Standing Seam panel, but not for Snap Lock.
How the panel is installed
Snap Lock attaches to solid substrates like plywood or metal decking. Clips hold the panel to the deck, and the seam closes by snapping the neighboring panels together.
- Substrate: solid, such as plywood or metal decking.
- Fastening: hidden fasteners.
- Clips: the one-piece clip allows unlimited thermal movement; an expansion clip is available.
- Seam: snapped together, with no mechanical seaming.
Clip relief is available. The seam height of 1.5" and the 17" width set the module of the roof: each panel covers one 17" width between seams.
Thermal movement and clips
Two clip types are listed, and clip relief is available as well. The available expansion clip allows for thermal expansion and contraction of the panel if needed. The one-piece clip allows for unlimited thermal movement.
Clip relief is available as a further option. Thermal expansion and contraction of the panel is the reason for the expansion clip.
The standing seam page on this site covers clips and how they pair with seamed panels.
Testing and certifications
Three UL ratings are listed for Snap Lock.
- UL 580 Class 90 Wind Uplift Rated
- UL 790 Class A Fire Rated
- UL 2218 Class 4 Impact Rated
Wind uplift is Class 90, fire is Class A and impact is Class 4. The Fasteel literature also carries the UL, Energy Star and Cool Roof Rating Council marks under its certifications heading.
With the right substrate, the panel can last up to 60 years. The listed performance features are wind uplift resistance and weather-tight capability.
What each version is for
Snap Lock suits roofs that call for hidden fasteners and a thin rib, on solid decking, at a slope of 3:12 or steeper. The snap seam removes the seaming step, which fits jobs where mechanical seaming is not wanted.
- Smooth: a flat pan between the 1.5" seams.
- 2 ribs: two ribs in the 17" pan.
- Striations: the third surface option for the pan.
- 26 Ga: the lighter gauge, with Galvalume, Paint Grip or SMP color finish.
- 24 Ga: the heavier gauge, with Galvalume, Paint Grip or Kynar 500 color finish.
Mechanically seamed standing seam, at a 2:12 minimum slope, is the alternative for lower slopes. Nail Strip, at 16" wide with a 1" seam height, needs no clips or seamers and can also be used as a wall panel.
