What MesaLine HSE is

MesaLine HSE is an insulated metal wall panel from Green Span Profiles. HSE stands for Heavy Stucco Embossed. The panel is made for exterior walls on commercial and industrial buildings. Its listed uses include commercial, industrial and low temp or cold storage structures.

MesaLine HSE carries the attributes of the MesaLine profile and adds a heavy stucco embossment on the exterior face. It suits buildings that need insulated metal panel roofs and walls with a more pronounced textured look.

The side joint is the Green-Lock joint, which is built to give a vapor seal. All of the Green Span wall profiles use it. The panel is a sandwich of two steel faces around a foam core, and the foam is poured in place.

Versions and sizes

One panel width is made. The coverage width is 42-inch. The exterior face carries the heavy embossed texture.

  • Panel use: exterior wall
  • Coverage width: 42-inch
  • Thickness: 2, 2.5, 3, 4, 5, 6 and 8-inch
  • Length: 8'-0" to 75'-0"
  • Exterior gauge: 26 or 24
  • Interior gauge: 26

Seven thicknesses are available, from 2-inch to 8-inch. Lengths run from 8'-0" to 75'-0", so many wall heights can be covered with a single piece of panel.

Materials and finishes

The exterior substrate is Galvalume. The interior substrate is Galvalume or stainless steel. The exterior finish is siliconized polyester or low-gloss PVDF. The interior finish is polyester, siliconized polyester or plastisol (PVC).

The exterior texture is heavy embossed. The interior texture is embossed or smooth. The two interior textures give a choice of face on the inside of the wall.

The core is continuously poured-in-place polyisocyanurate insulating foam. Tested open cell content is at least 90% closed cells. Apparent density is 2.25-pcf.

Joint and panel section

The joint is Green-Lock, an offset double tongue-and-groove. The panel section is shown with the exterior face on one side and the interior face on the other. Panels interlock along the 42-inch coverage width, and the tongue-and-groove edges meet as a vapor seal.

The foam core runs the full thickness of the panel, from 2-inch to 8-inch.

Test coverage spans thermal transmission (ASTM C518), air leakage (ASTM E283), water penetration (ASTM E331), foam core properties (ASTM C273, D1621, D1622, D1623 and D6226), fire (ASTM E84, NFPA 285 and FM 4880), impact (FM 4881 and TAS 201) and structural performance (ASTM E1592 and E72).

Thermal values

The nominal R-value is R-8 per inch of thickness. Tested R-values are higher at the colder mean temperature. Values for each thickness are:

  • 2-inch: 15.25 at 75° mean and 16.35 at 35° mean
  • 2.5-inch: 18.85 and 20.23
  • 3-inch: 22.45 and 24.10
  • 4-inch: 29.65 and 31.85
  • 5-inch: 36.85 and 39.60
  • 6-inch: 44.05 and 47.35
  • 8-inch: 51.25 and 55.10

The R-values come from ASTM C518 results. The K-factor is 0.139 BTU-in/hr-ft2-F° at 75° mean and 0.129 BTU-in/hr-ft2-F° at 35° mean. Air leakage is 0.0011-cfm/sf at 20-psf under ASTM E283. Water penetration under ASTM E331 is zero at 20-psf.

Panel weights

Weights are given in pounds per square foot for a 42-inch wide panel with 26-gauge or 24-gauge exterior face over a 26-gauge interior face. The first figure is 26/26 and the second is 24/26.

  • 2-inch: 2.10 and 2.32
  • 2.5-inch: 2.21 and 2.42
  • 3-inch: 2.31 and 2.52
  • 4-inch: 2.52 and 2.73
  • 5-inch: 2.73 and 2.94
  • 6-inch: 2.94 and 3.15
  • 8-inch: 3.36 and 3.57

A 2-inch panel with 26/26 gauges weighs 2.10-psf. An 8-inch panel with 24/26 gauges weighs 3.57-psf.

Fire, foam core and bond tests

Surface burning under ASTM E84 gives a flame spread below 25 and smoke developed below 450. The panel passed NFPA 285. It is Class 1 fire rated under FM 4880 and Class 1 approved under FM 4881.

Foam core properties are shear strength 16-psi (ASTM C273), compressive strength 18-psi (ASTM D1621) and tensile strength 21-psi (ASTM D1623).

Bond strength tests found no delamination or permanent set:

  • Fatigue endurance: 2,000,000 alternating cycles of L/180 deflection, with no facer or liner delamination, no fracture of the foam core and no permanent set
  • Freeze and heat cycle: twenty-one eight-hour cycles from –20° F to 180° F, with no delamination, blistering or permanent set
  • Humidity endurance: 1,200 hours of 93% humidity at 158° F, with no delamination, blistering or interface corrosion
  • Autoclave: exposure to 218° F and 2-psig for 2½ hours, with no facer or liner delamination

Approvals and where each version is used

MesaLine HSE holds a Miami-Dade County Notice of Acceptance, tested to the TAS 201 Florida Building Code impact procedure. It holds a Florida Product Approval and a state insurance department product evaluation. It also carries FM Approved status for Class 1 exterior wall systems.

Each approval covers MesaLine HSE itself. The 42-inch coverage and eight-foot minimum length suit exterior wall cladding. Thinner panels of 2-inch and 2.5-inch carry R-8 per inch at lower weight. Thicker panels of 6-inch and 8-inch give R-values of 44.05 and 51.25 at 75° mean. The 24-gauge exterior face adds weight over the 26-gauge face at every thickness. The stainless steel interior substrate and the smooth interior texture are options for the wall interior.
