Overview

QuadCore KS Shadowline Interior is an insulated wall and ceiling panel for interior use in controlled environments. It belongs to the KS Series of Kingspan controlled environment panels and is built on the QuadCore insulation core. Both faces carry the Shadowline profile, in stucco embossed or smooth finishes. The panel is made for vertical orientation only and has a 45 3/8 inch coverage width (1,153 mm), compared with the 42 inch coverage of the KS Flat panels.

Recorded uses are interior walls and ceilings in cold storage buildings, food and meat processing plants, critical temperature and controlled environment areas, data centers, and medical and pharmaceutical facilities. The joint has a caulked seal provision and a double tongue-and-groove form, and it forms the vapor barrier in enclosures of any size.

Thermal performance

The QuadCore core is rated at about R-8 per inch at a 75 degree F mean temperature and about R-9 per inch at 35 degrees F, both tested to ASTM C518. Panel R-values by thickness are shown below.

  • 2 inches: R-18 at 35 degrees F, R-16 at 75 degrees F
  • 2 3/4 inches: R-24.75 and R-22
  • 3 inches: R-27 and R-24
  • 4 inches: R-36 and R-32
  • 5 inches: R-45 and R-40
  • 6 inches: R-54 and R-48
  • 8 inches: R-72 and R-64

Panel weights

Published weights in pounds per square foot for the 45 3/8 inch width depend on thickness and on the gauge of each facer. The figures run from the lightest combination, 26 ga on both faces, to the heaviest, 22 ga on both faces.

  • 2 inches: 2.15 lb/sq ft with 26 ga on both faces, 2.41 with a 24 ga exterior and 26 ga interior, 2.68 with 24 ga on both faces, and 3.20 with 22 ga on both faces
  • 2 3/4 inches: 2.30, 2.56, 2.83 and 3.35 for the same four combinations
  • 3 inches: 2.35, 2.61, 2.88 and 3.40
  • 4 inches: 2.55, 2.81, 3.08 and 3.60
  • 5 inches: 2.75, 3.01, 3.28 and 3.80
  • 6 inches: 2.95, 3.21, 3.48 and 4.00

A 22 ga exterior with a 26 ga interior weighs the same as 24 ga on both faces at each thickness, for example 2.68 lb/sq ft at 2 inches. A 22 ga exterior with a 24 ga interior is 2.94 lb/sq ft at 2 inches and 4 inches reaches 3.34 lb/sq ft.

Fire and structural testing

  • FM 4880: Class 1 fire rating of building panels or interior finish materials
  • FM 4882: smoke sensitive occupancies, interior and exterior use
  • ASTM E84: flame spread 25 or less and smoke developed 90 or less
  • CAN/ULC-S102: flame spread 20 and smoke developed 45 for the panel insulation core
  • CAN/ULC-S138: passed, fire growth of foamed plastic insulated building panels in a full scale room configuration
  • NFPA 259: tested for potential heat of building materials
  • ASTM E72: vacuum chamber tested
  • ASTM D1623: tensile bond strength of metal to foam, with the sample pressurized to 2 psi at 218 degrees F in an autoclave for 2 1/2 hours
  • Skin delamination: none with direct pull-off pressure up to 1,188 psf

The FM ratings apply to thicknesses of 2 to 8 inches, 45 inch width, minimum panel length of 8 feet, and minimum facer gauge of 26 ga on both faces. FM compliance requires installation to the FM installation specifications on ApprovalGuide.com. The regional approval is City of Los Angeles (LADBS) CCRR 0567, FB 3080.

Allowable load and span

Span tables for this panel apply at an interior design load of plus or minus 5 psf, single span, with deflection limits of L/180 and L/120. They cover six facer gauge combinations, from 22 ga on both faces to 26 ga on both faces, and four temperature conditions: no differential, 50, 75 and 100 degrees F.

With 22 ga on both faces and no temperature differential, a 2 inch panel spans 21 feet 11 inches at L/180 and 25 feet 4 inches at L/120, a 4 inch panel spans 35 feet 4 inches and 38 feet 11 inches, and an 8 inch panel spans 55 feet 1 inch and 55 feet 7 inches. At a 100 degree F differential the same 2 inch panel spans 9 feet 10 inches and 13 feet 10 inches, and the 8 inch panel spans 32 feet 10 inches and 43 feet 7 inches.

With a 22 ga exterior and 24 ga interior and no differential, the 2 inch panel spans 21 feet 1 inch and 24 feet 1 inch, and the 8 inch panel spans 49 feet 7 inches at both limits.

Finishes and installation details

The standard finish is Imperial White in a Sherwin-Williams WeatherXL siliconized modified polyester, with a solar reflectance of 0.62, emissivity of 0.86 and SRI of 74. Several stock colors and USDA approved finishes are offered, as well as colors matched to a project. For heavy washdown interiors, CLEAN safe 120 antibacterial PVC and stainless steel facings are available.

The CAD detail set for the interior series, vertical installation, covers the interior panel profile, expanded and engaged joints, standard fastening, fastening patterns 1A through 5A, thermal cuts at the joint, insulated slab base channels, partition bases on curbs and insulated floors, outside and inside corners, framed openings with double pan or thermally broken jambs, stack joints, rakes against a membrane roof, low and high eaves, and wall-to-ceiling intersections.

Thermal warranty and certification

A 30-year limited thermal warranty is offered on panels with the QuadCore core. It covers the foam R-value, which must stay within 10 percent of the average published on the date of sale, for products bought on or after June 1, 2018. Continuous exposure to temperatures above 180 degrees F (82 degrees C) falls outside the warranty.

Insulated wall and roof panel systems from Kingspan hold UL GREENGUARD Gold certification to UL 2818 (certificate 86747-420, period 31 Aug 2017 to 31 Aug 2026). KS Shadowline Interior is one of the insulated metal panel products in the Kingspan controlled environment range.
