Overview
Creative Design Bold Face Coping is a metal coping cover from Metal-Era's Creative Design Series, made to cap a parapet wall and give the roof edge a simple cornice profile. The cover snaps over a row of anchor clips fastened to the wall, in 12'-0" lengths, with no crimping and no adhesives. Fastening holes are pre-punched, and the stainless steel springs on the anchor clips are attached at the factory.
The product is intended for buildings such as financial institutions, universities, schools and churches. Bold Face is one version within the series: the same sell sheet also covers Bullnose, Reveal, Cornice, Leak-Tite and Stone-Look versions, which are not described on this page. All of them share a 20-year, 120 MPH wind warranty, a choice of colors, sizes and materials, and prefabricated miters and accessories.
On a parapet, the roof membrane is laid over the top of the wall, covering the treated wood nailer or other substrate completely, and the coping then caps that termination. Bold Face coping is one of the perimeter metal components used to finish low-slope commercial roof systems where the roof meets a wall.
Sizes and stretch-out categories
Bold Face covers fit these dimension limits:
- Actual wall width: 5 in. minimum and 24 in. maximum.
- Outside face: 4.5 in. minimum and 12 in. maximum.
- Inside face: 2 1/4 in. minimum and 6 in. maximum.
Covers are ordered by stretch-out, the flat width of metal needed to form the profile, in five categories:
- Category I: stretch-out of 0 to 6 in.
- Category II: over 6 to 10 in.
- Category III: over 10 to 18 in.
- Category IV: over 18 to 26 in.
- Category V: over 26 to 42 in.
Cover lengths are 12 feet. At each splice joint the covers are installed with a 3/8-in. space so the metal can expand and contract with temperature. The test standard entry for the Bold Face version is not applicable, and no FM approval or Miami-Dade approval is listed for it.

Cover materials and finishes
Bold Face covers are made in five material choices:
- 24-gauge galvanized steel
- 22-gauge galvanized steel
- .040-in. aluminum
- .050-in. aluminum
- .063-in. aluminum
For Creative Design Bold Face Coping, standard colors are coil-coated and carry a 30-year Kynar 500 finish warranty. On Creative Design Bold Face Coping, ten express colors are offered: Dark Bronze, Bone White, Cityscape, Almond, Medium Bronze, Sandstone, Sierra Tan, Slate Gray, Stone White and Clear Anodized. All colors are also available in mill finish.
For Creative Design Bold Face Coping, custom post-coated Kynar 500 colors include a 10-year Kynar 500 finish warranty, and a 20-year warranty is available on request. Anodized finishes carry a 5-year warranty. Coil anodized finishing has no warranty, while post-coat Class 1 batch anodizing has a 5-year warranty that can be increased to 10 years for an upcharge.
Anchor clips, splice plates and fasteners
The anchor clips are 12 in. wide and galvanized. Clips at 4-ft. on-center spacing are 20-gauge. Corrosion resistant stainless steel springs are attached to the clips at the factory and provide positive spring loading on the cover. Clip spacing is set by Metal-Era, and separate installation sheets cover clips at 4 ft., 3 ft. and 2 ft. on center.
Every joint between cover lengths sits over an 8-in.-wide concealed splice plate with dual non-curing isocryl butyl sealant strips applied at the factory. The plates seal the joint while allowing the metal to move thermally. A galvanized corner support clip, also 8 in. wide, supports each corner assembly.
Fasteners are provided with the order for the substrate named on it: wood, masonry or metal. When no substrate is given, wood substrate fasteners are supplied. On Creative Design Bold Face Coping, fasteners must be corrosion resistant and rated for a minimum 250 lb. pullout force in the substrate being used. Where an EIFS system is present, the fastener goes through the face and must be long enough to penetrate the nailer.
Miters, endcaps and accessories
Corners and ends are factory fabricated, so miters need no field fabrication. Outside and inside 90° miters and right and left endcaps are offered. Unless noted otherwise, miters and accessories are furnished with a non-penetrating quicklock joint and are factory sealed watertight. Welded miters and accessories are available at a surcharge and require a minimum material thickness of .050 in.
Separate print approvals cover further pieces for the Bold Face line:
- Inside and outside coping miters with endcaps, right and left hand.
- Inside and outside T miters.
- "Z" coping miters, right and left hand, with legs up to 36 in.
- Step-up coping miters.
- Peak and valley miters.
- Non-90° miters, with a worksheet for measuring the angle without a protractor.
- Transition coping miters, straight coping transitions, and straight coping transitions with capped ends.
- The Space Maker outside coping miter.
- Pilaster caps.
Radius and other specially fabricated pieces are made to the needs of each project.
Installation sequence
The caution is to install miters first, and the membrane note adds that the roof membrane is positioned on top of the wall, covering the treated wood nailer or substrate completely, with at least 1/2 in. of excess membrane beyond the nailer where applicable, as an NRCA requirement. The steps run as follows.
- Corner support clips: locate and fasten one 8-in.-wide galvanized corner support clip to one side of the wall.
- Miter splice plates and anchor clips: position the splice plate in the center of the anchor clip, then install the assembly halfway into each end of the corner.
- Miter: place the corner assembly into position and secure it at the exposed edge of the anchor clips.
- Endcap anchor clips: locate and fasten galvanized anchor clips to the wall with the fasteners provided for the substrate.
- Endcap splice plates: remove the release paper from the top of the factory-applied sealant strips and place the splice plate onto the second anchor clip.
- Endcap: place the endcap into position and engage it onto the anchor clip, pressing downward on the outside face first and then on the inside face until snap lock occurs.
- Anchor clips: fasten galvanized anchor clips to the wall at 4'-0", 3'-0" or 2'-0" centers (a separate installation sheet exists for each spacing), with the fasteners provided.
- Splice plates: remove the release paper from the sealant strips and place a splice plate onto the anchor clips at each splice joint, 12'-0" on center.
- Coping: position the coping over the splice plates and press downward until the outside face clears them. Engage the outside face by pushing downward on the front edge until snap lock occurs, then the inside face by pushing downward on the back edge until snap lock occurs.
- Completion: continue installing coping with a 3/8-in. space at the splice joints for thermal expansion, field cutting with a fine tooth hacksaw or snips where necessary. The protective film is removed immediately.
Wind warranty
The 20-year, 120 MPH Creative Design Wind Warranty is available on orders that call for it in the specification. It gives a maximum of 20 years and 120 MPH of coverage for repair or replacement of any portion of the roof edge system that has failed because of a defect in Metal-Era supplied materials. The finish warranties described above are separate from it.
