Overview
Creative Design Stone-Look Coping is an aluminum parapet cap from Metal-Era's Creative Design Series. The cover is finished with a three-color spatter coat, and the 8-in.-wide splice plates at each joint are tooled so that they mimic masonry mortar joints. The cover is supplied in 4-ft. lengths and snaps down over galvanized anchor clips fastened to the wall, with no crimping and no adhesives.
This page covers the two versions of the product, tapered and flat. They share the same splice plates, anchor clips, materials, colors and accessories and differ in the shape of the cover top. Other Creative Design Series coping profiles, including bold face, bullnose, reveal, cornice and Leak-Tite, are separate products.
On a parapet, the roof membrane is positioned on top of the wall, covering the treated wood nailer or other substrate completely, and the coping then caps that termination. The coping is one of the perimeter metal components used to finish low-slope roof assemblies at the roof edge.
Tapered and flat versions
The tapered version has a cover top that slopes, with a 7/8-in. dimension on the inside face side and a 1 3/8-in. dimension on the outside face side. The flat version has a level top, with 7/8 in. shown on both sides. Both are made in 4-ft. lengths and both allow 3/8 in. for variation in the wall width.
- Actual wall size: 5 in. minimum and 32 in. maximum.
- Outside face: 3 1/2 in. minimum and 12 in. maximum.
- Inside face: 2 3/4 in. minimum and 6 in. maximum for both versions, with a Stone-Look minimum of 2.25 in. in the series range.
For Creative Design Stone-Look Coping, covers are ordered by stretch-out, the flat width of metal needed to form the profile:
- Category I: over 0 in. to 9.75 in.
- Category II: over 9.75 in. to 13.75 in.
- Category III: over 13.75 in. to 21.75 in.
- Category IV: over 21.75 in. to 29.75 in.
- Category V: over 29.75 in. to 45.75 in.

Materials, colors and finish
Covers are manufactured in two aluminum thicknesses: .050 in. and .063 in. Steel and .040-in. aluminum are not offered for this coping.
Four standard spatter colors are available, each a three-color spatter coat:
- Brown Stone Spatter
- Cast Stone Spatter
- Lime Stone Spatter
- Sand Stone Spatter
A 10-year Kynar 500 finish warranty is included with the spatter colors. Radius and specially fabricated products are available as custom work.
Splice plates, anchor clips and fasteners
Every joint between cover lengths is backed by an 8-in.-wide tooled splice plate. Each plate carries two factory-applied strips of non-curing isocryl butyl sealant that seal the joint while allowing the metal to move with temperature changes. All splice plates ship with the product.
Anchor clips are 12 in. wide and galvanized. Corrosion-resistant stainless-steel springs are attached to the clips at the factory and hold the cover under positive spring loading, so no adhesive is needed. Fastening holes are pre-punched and slotted to allow thermal movement. Metal-Era determines the clip spacing; the installation drawing for the 4-ft. version sets the clips at 4 ft. on center.
Fasteners are provided with the coping. The order names the substrate as wood, masonry or metal, and where no substrate is given, wood fasteners are supplied. The installation notes call for fasteners that are corrosion resistant and rated for a minimum 250 lb. pullout force in the substrate used. Where the wall is EIFS, the coping is fastened through the face with a fastener long enough to penetrate the nailer 1 1/2 in.
Miters, endcaps and accessories
Miters and all other accessories are welded and factory fabricated, which removes field fabrication. The print approval forms provide for outside miters at 90 degrees, inside miters at 90 degrees, right endcaps and left endcaps; non-90-degree miters have their own print approval and measurement worksheet.
Further accessory drawings cover:
- Step-up coping miters and peak and valley miters;
- inside and outside T miters and Z coping miters;
- transition coping miters, straight coping transitions and straight transitions with capped ends;
- inside and outside coping miters with endcaps;
- the Space Maker outside coping miter and pilaster caps.
On Creative Design Stone-Look Coping, welded accessories require a minimum material thickness of .050 in. The Z coping miter has a maximum leg length of 36 in. and can be ordered in welded or quicklock construction.
Testing and approvals
The tapered version is ANSI/SPRI ES-1 tested.
Installation sequence
Installation of the tapered or flat version at 4 ft. on center opens with the caution to install miters first. The steps are numbered as follows:
- Corner support clips: locate and fasten galvanized corner support clips to the wall.
- Miter splice plates and anchor clips: position the splice plate in the center of the anchor clip, then install the splice plate and anchor clip assembly into each end of the corner.
- Miter: place the corner assembly into position and secure it at the exposed edge of the anchor clips.
- Endcap anchor clips: locate and fasten galvanized anchor clips to the wall with the provided fasteners, placing the fastener in the third full hole from the bend.
- Endcap splice plates: remove the release paper from the factory-applied sealant strips and place the splice plate onto the second anchor clip.
- Endcap: hook the outside face of the endcap over the anchor clip and rotate it into place, then engage the rear leg onto the anchor clips by pressing downward until the snap lock occurs.
- Anchor clips: fasten galvanized anchor clips to the wall at 4 ft. centers with the provided fasteners.
- Splice plates: remove the release paper from the factory-applied sealant strips and place the splice plates onto the anchor clips at the splice joints, 4 ft. on center.
- Coping: locate the cover over the roof membrane and hook the outside face over the anchor clips, then press downward on the rear leg until it engages the anchor clips and rotate it into place.
- Completion: continue installing coping with a 3/8-in. space at the splice joints for thermal expansion, field cutting where necessary with a fine-tooth hacksaw or snips, and remove the protective film immediately.
The roof membrane is positioned on top of the wall so that it completely covers the treated wood nailer or substrate, with 1/2 in. minimum excess membrane beyond the nailer where applicable, an NRCA requirement.
Wind warranty
A 20-year, 120 mph Creative Design wind warranty is available on orders that call for it. For Creative Design Stone-Look Coping, the warranty provides a maximum of 20 years and 120 mph of coverage for repair or replacement of any portion of the roof edge system that has failed because of a defect in Metal-Era supplied materials.
