Overview
Seal-Tite WR Gutter is a metal roof-edge gutter from Metal-Era's Seal-Tite family. It is engineered and tested to the ANSI/SPRI GT-1 Standard for Gutter Systems Used with Low-Slope Roofs. The gutter is formed in 12-foot lengths with pre-punched holes and is carried on a 1-inch-wide, two-piece extruded aluminum internal bracket, so no external brackets or wind straps are used.
The gutter is one component of the gutter and drainage systems built at the edge of low-slope roofs. The 1-inch internal bracket also reduces the torque on the metal as it expands and contracts with temperature changes.
Three profiles are offered, box, offset and chamfer, each made in a standard design and an FM design. The FM design uses an alternative bracket configuration. Gutters ship with fasteners, and miters and end caps are fabricated at the factory.
The gutter is designed to drain large roof areas and is manufactured to the required drainage capacity and size. It adapts to optional drainage bars and to flow-through gravel stops.
Profiles and standard sizes
The three profiles are box, offset and chamfer. Face, bottom and back dimensions follow one size ladder:
- Face and bottom of 5 1/4 in. with a back of 6 1/4 in.
- Face and bottom of 5 3/4 in. with a back of 6 3/4 in.
- Face and bottom of 6 1/4 in. with a back of 7 1/4 in.
- Face and bottom of 6 3/4 in. with a back of 7 3/4 in.
- Face and bottom of 7 1/4 in. with a back of 8 1/4 in.
- Face and bottom of 7 3/4 in. with a back of 8 3/4 in.
The back height is always 1 in. more than the front height. Face heights run from 5 1/4 in. up to 7 3/4 in. to suit different nailers and coverage requirements. The bottom is provided in 1/2-in. increments.
A roof flange is optional. When no flange size is given, the gutter is made without a roof flange, and when no flange angle is given, the flange is made at 90 degrees.
The largest downspout dimension is limited by the bottom width, labeled B on the drawings:
- Standard design box: B minus 9/16 in.
- Standard design offset: B minus 1 9/16 in.
- FM design box: B minus 9/16 in.
- FM design offset: B minus 1 9/16 in.
- FM design chamfer: B minus 2 1/16 in.

For Seal-Tite WR Gutter, coil-coated standard colors carry a 30-year Kynar 500 finish warranty. On Seal-Tite WR Gutter, custom post-coated Kynar 500 colors include a 10-year Kynar 500 finish warranty, and a 20-year warranty is available on request. Anodized finishes carry a 5-year warranty. No warranty is available for coil-anodized finishing. Post-coat Class 1 batch anodizing is available with a 5-year warranty, with an option to increase it to 10 years for an upcharge.
For Seal-Tite WR Gutter, ten express colors are offered: Dark Bronze, Bone White, Cityscape, Almond, Medium Bronze, Sandstone, Sierra Tan, Slate Gray, Stone White and Clear Anodized. Express colors apply to 24-gauge, .040-in. and .050-in. material only. Custom colors and a mill finish are also available. Kynar 500 is a registered trademark of Arkema Inc.
Brackets, splices and fasteners
The internal bracket is extruded aluminum, 1 in. wide, supplied in two pieces that adjust to the gutter size. Lok-Tite is provided and required with all brackets. Gutter sections are joined by concealed splice plates 6 in. wide, which allow thermal movement and form a watertight seal at the joints. Non-curing sealant for the joints is supplied by others, and the blocking is also by others.
The two designs differ in how the gutter is held:
- Standard design: brackets at 2 ft. on center, with gutter fasteners and bracket fasteners both at 2 ft. on center.
- FM design: brackets at 18 in. on center, with gutter fasteners at 12 in. on center. Each bracket takes two fasteners in the base and one in the lip of the gutter face, and structural adhesive is applied at every bracket.
On both designs the flange fasteners, needed only when the gutter has a flange, are spaced at 12 in. on center. Pop rivets are provided.
Fasteners are matched to the substrate named on the order: wood, masonry or metal. When no substrate is given, wood fasteners are supplied.
Testing and approvals
Seal-Tite WR Gutter is ANSI/SPRI GT-1 tested to comply with the Standard for Gutter Systems, which the International Building Code references. The test pressures differ by design:
- Standard design box and offset: up to 223 psf horizontal and 136 psf vertical.
- FM design box, offset and chamfer: up to 596 psf horizontal, 224 psf vertical and 160 plf downward.
The gutter is Factory Mutual approved for wind uplift protection and is Miami-Dade approved, approval 23-0912.08 (12/11/28), for the High Velocity Hurricane Zone of the Florida Building Code.
Installation sequence for the FM design
The FM design installation guide is for the box, offset and chamfer versions and sets out seven steps:
- Installing Downspout Outlets. The outlet locations are determined and a hole is field cut in the gutter bottom. The outlet is inserted, a continuous bead of non-curing sealant is applied to its flange, and it is pop riveted from the outside at 2 in. on center.
- Installing Gutter End Caps. End caps are secured to the roof edge with the provided fasteners in every pre-punched hole, 12 in. on center, and in all roof flange holes when a flange is included.
- Installing Gutter Miters. Miters are fastened the same way, in every pre-punched hole at 12 in. on center.
- Installing Expansion Joints, if required. The joint goes where the roof plan specifies. It consists of two prefabricated end caps, one expansion joint cap and one expansion joint cover, with the end caps gapped at 1 in. maximum.
- Installing Gutter Straight Lengths. Work starts at the end caps and miters and moves inward to the center, with fasteners in every pre-punched hole at 12 in. on center. A 1/4-in. gap is left between gutter sections for thermal expansion, and the lengths of all straight pieces are reviewed before cutting to avoid a short section next to a full-length section.
- Installing Gutter Joint Splices. A continuous bead of non-curing sealant goes on both sides of the joint and the splice slides down into the gutter. It is pop riveted on the high side of the joint on three surfaces. There must be a splice at every joint.
- Installing Gutter Brackets. The bracket base is fastened first and the top part hooks on the face lip of the gutter. The top slides onto the base by 1/4 in. maximum, then a continuous bead of structural adhesive, 1 in. minimum, is applied. The top then slides on until aligned, and the face lip fasteners finish the bracket. Brackets are installed 18 in. on center.
Two notes accompany the steps. On Seal-Tite WR Gutter, all metal parts are isolated from ACQ treated wood or other galvanically incompatible material with appropriate membrane material. Appliance attachments such as lightning rods, signs or antennae that penetrate the edge system, cause a galvanic reaction or otherwise compromise the roof edge system are eliminated or isolated, per ANSI/SPRI/ED-1.
Wind warranty
A 30-year, 160 mph Seal-Tite Gutter System Wind Warranty is available on orders that call for it. It covers Seal-Tite WR Gutter, Seal-Tite Gold Industrial Gutter and Seal-Tite XL Gutter systems. The term runs 30 years from the date of final acceptance. Metal-Era replaces or repairs the portion of the gutter system that has failed because of a defect in Metal-Era supplied materials, and its obligation over the life of the warranty is limited to the owner's original cost of the system.
The warranty terms include these conditions:
- All accessories must be manufactured by Metal-Era.
- The owner gives Metal-Era written notice within 30 days of discovering a failure.
- The warranty does not apply to wind above 160 mph, flying debris or natural disasters, to separation of the wood nailer substrate from the building, to negligence, accidents or misuse, to metal work or material not furnished by Metal-Era, or to installation that departs from Metal-Era's specifications and printed installation instructions.
The finish warranties described above are separate.
