Overview

Seal-Tite XL Gutter is the largest gutter in Metal-Era's Seal-Tite family and is made in a box profile. Gutters are supplied in 12-foot lengths and hang from a lower mounting hanger on the wall, with pre-assembled Z-brackets inside the gutter. No individual external brackets or wind straps are used, so no post-paint is required on them. The system is one of the gutter and drainage systems installed at the edge of a roof.

The larger sizes drain large roof areas with fewer downspouts. The gutter is ANSI/SPRI GT-1 tested and FM Approved for wind uplift protection. For Seal-Tite XL Gutter, a 30-year, 160 mph wind warranty is available on orders that call for it.

Components are assembled on the roof and then set onto the wall. Pre-punched and pre-slotted holes set the fastener placement and spacing. The system can take optional waterproofing details: a gutter apron, a drip edge or a termination bar.

Sizes and versions

Four sizes are made, and the front height always equals the bottom width. The back is taller than the front, by 1 in. on the standard box version and by 2 in. on the version with a termination bar.

  • 8 in. front, 8 in. bottom, 9 in. back
  • 10 in. front, 10 in. bottom, 11 in. back
  • 12 in. front, 12 in. bottom, 13 in. back
  • 14 in. front, 14 in. bottom, 15 in. back

The termination bar version pairs the gutter with a CB-90 termination bar, with the top of the gutter flush with the substrate. Its back heights are 10, 12, 14 and 16 in. for the 8, 10, 12 and 14-in. sizes. A third print approval covers the gutter used with a mounting angle, which is needed where the building exterior is insulated panels, EIFS or another non-structural material.

The gutter cannot be cantilevered. The maximum downspout dimension is the gutter bottom width minus 1-9/16 in.

Materials and finishes

Gutters are made in three materials:

  • 22-gauge galvanized steel
  • .050-in. aluminum
  • .063-in. aluminum

The 24-gauge galvanized steel and .040-in. aluminum used in other Metal-Era gutters are not available in this size range. The pre-attached gutter cleat and the lower mounting hanger are made from the same material as the gutter.

On Seal-Tite XL Gutter, coil-coated standard colors carry a 30-year Kynar 500 finish warranty. For Seal-Tite XL Gutter, custom post-coated Kynar 500 colors include a 10-year finish warranty, and a 20-year warranty is available on request. Anodized finishes come with a 5-year warranty; coil anodized finishing has no warranty, and post-coat Class 1 batch anodizing can be raised to 10 years for an upcharge. A mill finish is also available.

For Seal-Tite XL Gutter, ten express colors are offered: Medium Bronze, Sandstone, Sierra Tan, Slate Gray, Stone White, Dark Bronze, Bone White, Cityscape, Almond and Clear Anodized. Express colors apply to 24-gauge, .040-in. and .050-in. material only.

Wind testing and approvals

The gutter is ANSI/SPRI GT-1 tested, the standard for gutter systems. Test pressures reach up to 266 psf horizontal, 291 psf vertical and 175 plf downward. It is also Factory Mutual approved for wind uplift protection.

Components, miters and accessories

Each gutter ships with the parts that attach it:

  • A lower mounting hanger, pre-punched for fasteners at 12 in. on center.
  • Pre-assembled Z-brackets, spaced 32 in. on center, with a pre-punched hole for the fastener.
  • A pre-attached gutter cleat that snaps into the hanger.
  • Splice plates, with fasteners and pop rivets.
  • A Rauch alignment bar, a tool that holds the lower mounting hanger in place while it is fastened. It is not part of the finished assembly.

The gutter itself has pre-slotted holes at 12 in. on center. Fasteners are provided for wood, masonry or metal substrates, and wood fasteners are supplied where none is named.

Left and right endcaps and inside and outside 90-degree miters are factory fabricated, so no field fabrication is needed. Expansion joints come in Style 1 and Style 2. Accessories are made with a non-penetrating quicklock joint, then factory sealed watertight. Welded accessories cost extra and need a minimum material thickness of .050 aluminum. Miters other than 90 degrees have a separate print approval.

Installation sequence

The installation instructions for the box version run in numbered steps.

  1. Optional continuous mounting angle: the angle is positioned over the roof edge and fastened 12 in. on center. Its fasteners are not provided.
  2. Membrane installation: the membrane runs over the roof edge and down the outside face of the wall, covering the mounting angle or treated wood nailers completely, with 1/2 in. of excess. Nailers are at least 2 x 4 and sit flush with the wall.
  3. Step 3A, lower mounting hanger: protective film is removed, the Rauch alignment bar is rotated into the hanger starting at the corner, and the hanger is fastened 12 in. on center. The bar recesses the gutter top about 1/4 in. from the top of the wall.
  4. Step 3B, lower mounting hanger installation: each next piece slides into the mounted piece with a 1-in. lap and is fastened 12 in. on center.
  5. Step 4A, miter Z-bracket installation: the Z-bracket sits 3 in. from the corner and 6 in. from the end of the miter leg, fastened into the 1-in. lip of the gutter.
  6. Step 4B, miter installation on wall: miters go first, pushed down into the hanger until the cleat snaps in. A heavy bead of non-curing sealant goes inside each miter end.
  7. Step 5A, gutter Z-bracket installation: the Z-bracket hooks under the leading edge lip and rotates into place. The first is fastened 8 in. from the end, then 32 in. on center, five per 12-foot length.
  8. Step 5B, gutter installation on wall: the gutter rests on the hanger and rotates until the cleat snaps in. It is fastened to the nailer through the slotted holes 12 in. on center.
  9. Step 6, splice plate installation: a heavy bead of non-curing sealant goes on the inside end, leaving a 3/8-in. gap at the joint. A 6-in. wide splice plate is riveted with 1/8-in. stainless steel pop rivets 2 in. on center, starting 1 in. from the bottom. A 6-in. EPDM butyl tape lapping the sections at least 1 in. is recommended.

Mounting angle

The mounting angle is a separate aluminum piece for use with this gutter. It comes in 12-foot lengths, mill finish only, with no lap, no splice and no miter. Slots measuring 5/32 by 1/2 in. sit 12 in. on center, and the material options are .080-in., .100-in. and .125-in. aluminum.

Wind warranty

The 30-year, 160 mph wind warranty also covers the Seal-Tite WR and Seal-Tite Gold Industrial gutters. For 30 years from the date of final acceptance, Metal-Era LLC replaces or repairs the portion of the gutter system that has failed due to a defect in Metal-Era supplied materials. Its obligation is limited to the owner's original cost of the system.

Written notice is due within 30 days of discovering a failure, and all accessories must be made by Metal-Era. The warranty does not apply if the system is damaged by wind above 160 mph, flying debris or natural disasters, or if the failure comes from the wood nailer separating from the building. It also excludes damage from negligence or misuse, work by others mixed into the system, and installation not made in strict accordance with Metal-Era's specifications and printed instructions.
