Overview

Creative Design Shadow Line Fascia is a roof-edge fascia from Metal-Era's Creative Design Series, formed with a shadow line profile. The cover is supplied in 12-foot lengths with pre-punched fastening holes. The holes are slotted for thermal movement of the materials and for correct fastener placement and spacing.

The cover hooks onto a 20-gauge galvanized continuous cleat and rotates up and over an extruded aluminum anchor bar, which terminates the roofing membrane at the edge. The design is non-penetrating, so stripping-in and heat welding are not part of the edge detail, and watertight integrity does not depend on flashing procedures, adhesives or lap sealants. Metal-Era holds a U.S. patent, 7,451,572, noted on the installation drawing.

One product name covers two versions that differ in how the membrane is terminated: the Single-Ply version for fully adhered or mechanically attached single-ply roofs, and the Built-Up or Modified version for built-up (BUR) and modified bitumen roofs. Both are part of the same series as the Creative Design Bullnose and Cornice fascia. The fascia is one of the perimeter metal components used with low-slope roof systems.

Single-ply and built-up or modified versions

The two versions share the same face heights, cover materials, finish options, cleat and 12-foot cover length. They differ in the anchor bar assembly, the product identification numbers and what seals the membrane at the bar.

  • Single-Ply version, for fully adhered or mechanically attached single-ply membranes: product ID numbers AEF-SL85, AEF-SL100, AEF-SL115 and AEF-SL130. Non-curing sealant, supplied by others, is applied along the anchor bar. Anchor bar EPDM splice plates are included.
  • Built-Up or Modified version: product ID numbers AEFM-SL85, AEFM-SL100, AEFM-SL115 and AEFM-SL130. An approved mastic or sealant and a flashing strip over the membrane are required at the anchor bar.

Each version has its own print approval, a one-page drawing that carries the dimensions, fastener schedule and an order block for material, color, finish, lineal feet of 12-foot lengths, outside and inside 90-degree miters, and right and left endcaps. The Single-Ply drawing is numbered 11010-1904 and the Built-Up or Modified drawing 11010-1408, both dated 06/09/17.

Face heights and product numbers

Face heights run from 8 1/2 in. to 13 in., chosen to suit different nailer arrangements and coverage requirements. Four sizes are made in each version:

  • 8 1/2 in.: AEF-SL85 (Single-Ply), AEFM-SL85 (Built-Up or Modified)
  • 10 in.: AEF-SL100 (Single-Ply), AEFM-SL100 (Built-Up or Modified)
  • 11 1/2 in.: AEF-SL115 (Single-Ply), AEFM-SL115 (Built-Up or Modified)
  • 13 in.: AEF-SL130 (Single-Ply), AEFM-SL130 (Built-Up or Modified)

On both drawings the cover profile has a 3-in. top dimension and a 1 1/4-in. rise. AutoCAD detail drawings are published for each of the four face heights in both versions.

Cover materials and finishes

Covers are made in .050-in. and .063-in. aluminum. The series sell sheet also lists 22-gauge steel for the Shadow Line fascia, and the order block on each print approval has boxes for .050-in. aluminum, .063-in. aluminum and other material.

Standard colors are coil-coated and include a 30-year Kynar 500 finish warranty. For Creative Design Shadow Line Fascia, custom post-coated Kynar 500 colors include a 10-year Kynar 500 finish warranty, and a 20-year warranty is available on request. Anodized finishes carry a 5-year warranty. Coil anodized finishing has no warranty; post-coat Class 1 batch anodizing is available with a 5-year warranty that can be raised to 10 years for an upcharge. All colors are also available in mill finish.

For Creative Design Shadow Line Fascia, ten express colors are offered: Dark Bronze, Bone White, Cityscape, Almond, Medium Bronze, Sandstone, Sierra Tan, Slate Gray, Stone White and Clear Anodized. Kynar 500 is a registered trademark of Arkema Inc.

Anchor bar, cleat and splice plates

The patented, extruded aluminum anchor bar terminates the membrane at the roof edge and is available to dry-in the roof structure. When a roof is replaced, the anchor bar can be removed, cleaned and reinstalled without loss of strength or appearance.

The cover hooks onto a 20-gauge galvanized continuous cleat. Joints between 12-foot cover sections are backed by concealed splice plates, 3 1/2 in. wide, provided at all joints. The interlocking, concealed splice plate design prevents splice plate migration under the panels and avoids the cover plates or lap joints seen at the seams of other fascia. Anchor bar splice plates are EPDM, and the bar sections themselves are installed with a 1/2-in. space between them.

Fasteners and splice plates arrive with the product. Sealant is supplied by others.

  • Anchor bar: stainless steel fasteners provided by Metal-Era at 12 in. on center, shown as #10 x 2 in. on the print approvals and #9 x 2 in. on the installation drawing.
  • Cleat: 1/4 x 1 1/4-in. masonry or wood fasteners provided by Metal-Era at 24 in. on center.
  • Roof edge nailer: treated wood, minimum 2 x 4, with its outside edge flush with or slightly past the outermost edge of the wall.

Miters, endcaps and accessories

Miters are factory fabricated, which removes field fabrication at corners. Outside and inside 90-degree miters and right and left endcaps are ordered on the print approval alongside the straight lengths. Non-90-degree miters have their own print approval and an angle measurement worksheet.

The Fascia Extender with no offset and the Fascia Extender with offset are the two Fascia Extender products, and installation is offered in a splice plate version and a lap joint version. The offset extender has pre-slotted holes at 12 in. on center and is furnished with a 22-gauge galvanized continuous cleat. It is made in 24-gauge or 22-gauge galvanized steel, or .040-in., .050-in. or .063-in. aluminum, and the .050-in. and .063-in. aluminum versions are provided with 3 1/2-in. wide concealed splice plates because of the material thickness. Welded miters and accessories are an option, and fabrication of miters and accessories is otherwise standard.

The lap joint extender is installed starting with the miters. The continuous cleat is fastened true and level at 12 in. on center, the drip edge of each extender hooks onto the cleat and is fastened at 12 in. on center, and panels run right to left as seen from the rooftop, lapped 1 in. at the notch provided and field cut as necessary.

Installation sequence

The Single-Ply installation drawing (11110-4255, Rev. C, 12/11/08) gives seven numbered steps.

  1. Roof Membrane. The membrane is laid over the roof edge and down the outside face of the wall, covering the treated wood nailers completely, with 1/2 in. of excess membrane left.
  2. Miter & Scupper Anchor Bar (Preparation). Miters and scuppers are laid on the deck with the outside face down and the aluminum anchor bar clean and free of dirt or dust. A heavy 3/8-in. bead of non-curing sealant goes at the right-angle intersection of the deck flange and the back of the anchor bar, along the full length of each miter anchor bar.
  3. Anchor Bar Splice Plates. Non-curing sealant is applied to each plate as in step 2, to both sides of the spacer and on the deck flange.
  4. Miter Bar & Miter Cleat Installation. Miter cleat pieces hook to the miter bar, with the ends of cleat and bar flush. The roofing membrane is folded at corners and the miter assembly is installed with one anchor bar splice plate under each end of the miter bar, snug to the bar ends. The miter bar takes 2-in. hex head stainless steel fasteners and the miter cleat takes 1 1/4-in. hex head corrosion resistant fasteners. Spillouts and scuppers follow, with sealant, fasteners and anchor bar splice plates.
  5. Anchor Bar & Cleat Installation. The anchor cleat is hooked to the anchor bar. The 12-foot anchor bar and cleat sections, with sealant applied, overlap the anchor bar splice plate, leaving a 1/2-in. space between bars. The bar is fastened at 12 in. on center and the cleat at 24 in. on center through slotted holes. Sections are field cut as necessary.
  6. Fascia Miter Covers. Miter covers go on first, with one splice plate under each end. Each cover engages the anchor cleat and rotates up and over the miter anchor bar until engaged along its entire length.
  7. Fascia Covers. The 12-foot covers go on with a 3/8-in. gap between sections and one splice plate under the far end of each. Each cover hooks its lower edge onto the anchor cleat and rotates up and over the anchor bar until engaged along its entire length. Field cutting uses a fine tooth hacksaw.

The protective plastic film comes off before each fascia section is installed. Installers wear protective eyewear, and fasteners are not over-driven because stripping can occur at high driver torque. A 600-800 rpm electric drill with a depth-sensing nose-piece is the recommended tool, and impact tools are not used. The cleat must be hooked into the miter bar before installing it.

Wind warranty

A 20-Year, 120 MPH Creative Design Wind Warranty is available on orders written to a project's specification. On Creative Design Shadow Line Fascia, the warranty provides a maximum of 20 years and 120 MPH of coverage for repair or replacement of any portion of the roof edge system that has failed because of a defect in Metal-Era supplied materials. The finish warranties described under cover materials are separate from it.
