Overview
PermaSnap Coping is a snap-on metal coping from the PermaSnap family of Hickman Edge Systems, made for parapet conditions. The cover is supplied in 12-ft. lengths and snaps onto galvanized anchor clips with no crimping and no exposed fasteners. Miters and accessories are factory fabricated, and all fasteners and matched-color concealed splice plates are provided.
The product is made in two versions, PermaSnap Plus Coping and PermaSnap Coping. Each comes in tapered, flat and existing-slope forms, and the profile is flush on the inside face with a drip on the outside face. Both are tested to ANSI/SPRI/FM 4435/ES-1 to comply with the International Building Code.
PermaSnap coping is roof edge protection for parapet conditions on low-slope roof assemblies.
Versions and wall sizes
The two versions differ in clip gauge and wall size. The clips are 12 in. wide and galvanized, and they are spaced at 36 in. on center for all sizes.
- PermaSnap Plus Coping: 16-gauge clips. Walls from 6 in. to 32 in. wide, tested from 6 in. to 24 in.
- PermaSnap Coping: 20-gauge clips. Walls from 6 in. to 24 in. wide, tested from 6 in. to 16 in.
Face sizes are the same on both. The outside face runs from 3 1/4 in. to 12 in. and is tested from 3 1/4 in. to 6 in. The inside face runs from 3 in. to 6 in. and is tested from 3 in. to 4 in. A 3/8-in. allowance for wall variation is included.

Cover materials, finishes and colors
Covers for both versions are 24-gauge or 22-gauge galvanized steel, or .040-in., .050-in. or .063-in. aluminum. On both versions, oil canning can occur on larger face heights, and 22-gauge steel, .050-in. aluminum or .063-in. aluminum is recommended for a face height over 8 in.
The ten express colors are Dark Bronze, Bone White, Cityscape, Almond, Medium Bronze, Sandstone, Sierra Tan, Slate Gray, Stone White and Clear Anodized. Coil-coated standard colors carry a 30-year Kynar 500 finish warranty, and mill finish and custom colors are also available. Coping can be custom fabricated for specific requirements.
Wind testing and warranty
- PermaSnap Plus Coping: ANSI/SPRI/FM 4435/ES-1 test pressures up to 65 psf horizontal and 111 psf vertical, for a .063-in. aluminum cap on a 24-in. wall.
- PermaSnap Coping: ANSI/SPRI/FM 4435/ES-1 test pressures up to 69 psf horizontal and 121 psf vertical, for a 24-gauge galvanized steel cap on a 16-in. wall.
Both versions carry a 20-year, 120 MPH wind warranty. Both versions carry the ANSI/SPRI/FM4435/ES-1 tested mark.
Clips, splice plates and fasteners
Each cover snaps onto the 12-in.-wide galvanized steel anchor clips, spaced at 36 in. on center for all sizes. A concealed splice plate, 6 in. wide with formed wings, joins the covers and is matched to the cover color. One splice is used at each clip location. Fasteners are provided, including self-drilling screws and nails, and pre-punched slotted fastening holes allow thermal movement of the materials.
The components of a run are the formed coping cap in 12-ft. lengths, the 6-in. concealed joint splices, the clips, and inside and outside corner supports that support the inside and outside miters. Fastener counts, all included and required:
- Top of each clip: four fasteners.
- Face of each clip: two fasteners.
- Each splice: two screws.
- Each corner support: two fasteners, and two nails per outside corner support.
Wood fasteners are supplied. On both order forms the substrate is wood, masonry or metal, and wood fasteners are provided when none is named. Masonry conditions call for a 3/16-in. drill bit to pre-drill.
Miters and accessories
Miters and accessories are factory fabricated, so no field fabrication is needed. The order form for each version lists straight lengths in 12-ft. lengths, inside and outside 90° miters, left and right endwall flashings, left and right endcaps, transition miters, T-miters, Z-miters, ridge miters and valley miters. Welded radius and vault sections come in 4-ft. lengths, with radius-to-straight and vault-to-straight miters and end caps.
Unless otherwise noted, miters and accessories use a non-penetrating quicklock joint and are factory sealed watertight. Quicklock is the default and welded construction is a surcharge item, which needs a minimum material thickness of .050 in. Non-90° miters have a separate print approval, and the standard miters, endcaps and endwall flashings are drawn at a nominal 24 in. The drawing for the standard accessories shows a 1/4-in. gap and an outside face dimension of 2 in. at the ends.
Installation steps
All miters, end conditions and accessory conditions are installed before the straight sections. The guide numbers the standard steps as follows.
- Corner Supports: begin at the corner locations. Install the corner supports flush against the substrate and secure them with the fasteners provided. Nails go in one of the three lowest full holes, two required per face.
- Coping Clip: align the center of each clip from the corner so that the miter leg sits half-way over each clip. Each clip top takes four fasteners, located in the third full hole from the outside face.
- Coping Splice: separate the splices from the set, align the face kickouts of the splice and the clip, and secure each splice with the fasteners provided at the pre-punched holes in the face of the splice. Two fasteners go in each splice face.
- Coping Miter: place one leg of the miter over the corner support and clip, rotate backward and press downward on the cap to engage the clip, then repeat on the adjacent leg. An inside miter is installed the same way using inside corner supports.
- Coping End Condition: place clips at the end locations, hook the end cap or end term on the front of the clip, rotate backward and press downward to engage the clip. The end cap is secured to the clip with a pop-rivet or screw supplied by the installer, to prevent lateral movement.
- Coping Straight Section: after all corner and end conditions are installed, install the straight sections, cutting down and adjusting spacing as needed. Corners and end conditions are not cut; the straight sections take the adjustment. The back leg of the coping is secured to a clip every 48 feet with a pop-rivet or screw supplied by the installer, to prevent lateral movement. Sections are set with a 1/4-in. gap.
Installation notes and accessory conditions
For PermaSnap Coping, all metal parts are isolated from ACQ treated wood or other galvanically incompatible material with appropriate membrane material. Appliance attachments such as lightning rods, signs or antennae that penetrate the edge system, induce a galvanic reaction or otherwise compromise the roof edge system are eliminated or isolated, per ANSI/SPRI/FM4435/ES-1. Lightning protection systems are not affixed directly to the product.
Accessory conditions include inline miters, pier miters, tee miters, ridge miters, valley miters, horizontal Zee miters, vertical Zee miters, vaulted conditions and radius conditions.
