Overview

Perma-Tite System 300 Fascia is the built-up or modified version of Metal-Era's Perma-Tite fascia family. It is a snap-on fascia: a formed metal cover is pushed down onto a galvanized waterdam that is nailed to the wood nailer at the roof edge, and the cover engages the waterdam along its whole length. Dual attachment points, one on the face and one on the roof deck, are built into the waterdam, and the cover leaves no exposed fasteners.

The same Perma-Tite fascia family also includes System 200 Snap-On and System 200 Crimp-On, both made for fully adhered or mechanically attached single-ply membranes. System 300 is the version for built-up roofing and modified bitumen membrane, and its installation sequence is written around those membranes: all plies are laid over the nailer, and the base ply overhangs onto the face of the nailer before the waterdam goes on.

Fascia covers are supplied in 12-foot lengths. Miters and accessories are prefabricated, so corners do not need to be formed in the field. System 300 is part of the perimeter metal that finishes built-up and modified bitumen roof assemblies at the edge. For Perma-Tite System 300 Fascia, a 20-year, 120 mph Perma-Tite wind warranty is available on orders that call for it.

Face heights and dimensions

Six face heights are made, each tied to the number of wood nailers it covers. H is the overall face height and X is the vertical dimension of the cover measured from the roof flashing down.

  • FA-350: H 5 1/4 in., X 2 7/8 in., covers 1 nailer.
  • FA-365: H 6 3/4 in., X 4 3/8 in., covers 2 nailers.
  • FA-380: H 8 1/4 in., X 5 7/8 in., covers 3 nailers.
  • FA-395: H 9 3/4 in., X 7 3/8 in., covers 4 nailers.
  • FA-3110: H 11 1/4 in., X 8 7/8 in., covers 5 nailers.
  • FA-3125: H 12 3/4 in., X 10 3/8 in., covers 6 nailers.

On the profile drawing, the top of the cover rises 2 3/8 in. above the roof flashing line and the drip leg sits 2 1/8 in. above the bottom of the cover. Standard fascia does not function with roof flashing thicker than 3/16 in.

Three taller sizes (9 3/4, 11 1/4 and 12 3/4 in.) are also made with a stiffening band. The band versions cover 4, 5 and 6 nailers with X dimensions of 7 3/8, 8 7/8 and 10 3/8 in. A 3 1/2-in.-wide splice plate is included at the joints of the standard fascia and the stiffening band version alike.

Cover materials, colors and finishes

Covers are manufactured in these materials:

  • 24-gauge galvanized steel
  • 22-gauge galvanized steel
  • .040-in. aluminum
  • .050-in. aluminum
  • .063-in. aluminum

Oil canning can occur on larger face heights. For face heights above 8 1/4 in., .050-in. or .063-in. material is recommended, and the 24-gauge steel and .040-in. aluminum options are the ones flagged for oil canning. On Perma-Tite System 300 Fascia, welded accessories require a minimum material thickness of .050 in.

The waterdam behind the cover is 24-gauge galvanized steel in every version.

For Perma-Tite System 300 Fascia, ten express colors are offered: Dark Bronze, Bone White, Cityscape, Almond, Medium Bronze, Sandstone, Sierra Tan, Slate Gray, Stone White and Clear Anodized. Express colors apply to 24-gauge, .040-in. and .050-in. material only. Express, standard and custom colors and finishes are made, and all colors are available in mill finish.

  • Coil-coated standard colors include a 30-year Kynar 500 finish warranty.
  • Custom post-coated Kynar 500 colors include a 10-year Kynar 500 finish warranty; a 20-year warranty is available on request.
  • Anodized finishes carry a 5-year warranty. No warranty is available for coil anodized finishing. Post-coat Class 1 batch anodized finishing has a 5-year warranty with an option to increase it to 10 years for an upcharge.

Waterdam, clips and fastening

The waterdam is 24-gauge galvanized steel with slotted fastening holes that allow for thermal movement of the materials and set fastener placement and spacing. A raised button-hole on the vertical face of the waterdam marks the face fastening points.

  • Spring clips are 4 in. wide and are set at 4 ft. 0 in. on center along each cover.
  • Holes in the top of the waterdam are pre-punched at 6 in. on center and are fastened as the job requires.
  • The waterdam is fastened through its pre-punched holes at 12 in. on center.
  • Fasteners are 1 1/4-in. galvanized ring shank roofing nails, provided with the fascia.

Fascia covers are installed with a 3/8-in. space between them, and the 3 1/2-in.-wide splice plate sits under the joint. Waterdam sections lap 1 in. at each joint.

Wind testing and approvals

System 300 is tested to ANSI/SPRI/FM 4435/ES-1, the standard referenced by the International Building Code for roof edge wind resistance. It is FM Approved for wind uplift protection and carries Miami-Dade approval 23-0912.08 (12/11/28) for the High Velocity Hurricane Zone of the Florida Building Code.

ANSI/SPRI/FM 4435/ES-1 design pressures are given by face height and material:

  • FA-50 to FA-80 in 24-gauge or .040-in. material: 196 psf.
  • FA-50 to FA-80 in .050-in. or .063-in. material: 216 psf.
  • FA-95 to FA-125 in .050-in. or .063-in. material: 116 psf.

The stiffening band version lists a design pressure of 116 psf for FA-395 to FA-3125 in .050-in. or .063-in. material.

Miters, scuppers and radius work

Outside and inside 90-degree miters, right and left endcaps, right and left endwall flashings, and three scupper types are ordered with the fascia. Miters and accessories are furnished standard unless welded construction is specified, and welded accessories need at least .050-in. material. Non-90-degree miters have their own print approval and a measurement worksheet.

  • Overflow, spillout and downspout scuppers are each offered in style A, a tapered 1 1/2-in. drop, and style B, flat.
  • A miter counterflashing is placed on each corner.
  • Radius fascia is made for curved edges. The radius condition must be given either as the actual known radius in feet and inches or from field condition measurements, and fabrication proceeds only after a signed print approval is received.

A fascia extender is made for the same edge. The lap joint version hooks the drip edge of each extender onto a continuous cleat, with the cleat and the drip edge fastened at 12 in. on center, and the panels lap 1 in. at a notch. The version with offset has pre-slotted holes at 12 in. on center and includes a continuous 22-gauge galvanized cleat. In .050-in. and .063-in. aluminum it is provided with 3 1/2-in.-wide concealed splice plates because of the material thickness.

Installation sequence

The installation instructions for the built-up or modified snap-on version run in this order:

  1. Install all plies of built-up roofing or modified membrane over the nailer, letting the base ply overhang onto the face of the nailer. Take extreme care to avoid spilling asphalt over the edge.
  2. Locate and install the miters, nailing through the pre-slotted fastening holes on top of the nailer and on the outside face. Mark the scupper locations but do not install scuppers yet, leaving a 14 1/2-in. gap for each. Install the 12-ft. waterdam sections from right to left as seen from the roof top, nailing through the slotted holes and lapping the joints 1 in.
  3. Space the waterdam 14 1/2 in. apart at each scupper location and fasten the waterdam flange 6 in. on center with the provided nails.
  4. Install the scupper with the provided ring shank roofing nails, with the roof membrane under the scupper and the scupper flange set in a continuous bead of non-curing sealant supplied by others.
  5. Position the roof flashing up the fascia and scupper waterdam, trim it flush with the cant, and nail the waterdam 12 in. on center through all raised fastening holes on the outside face.
  6. Center the extender below the scupper and fasten it through its pre-slotted holes.
  7. Place spring clips 4 in. from the end of the fascia cover and push the cover downward until it engages the waterdam and fits tight against the sides of the scupper.
  8. Flash with the appropriate type and width of roof membrane flashing. Metal-Era asphalt primer is necessary to flash up the cant of the waterdam, and overhanging flashing is trimmed flush with the face of the cant.
  9. Place the miter counterflashing on the corner.
  10. Install the miter covers first, with one splice plate and one 4-in.-wide spring clip inserted at each end, half exposed, and two clips in the corners of the miter. Push the covers downward until engaged along the whole miter.
  11. Install the 12-ft. fascia cover sections, with one splice plate and one spring clip under the far end of each cover and clips at 4 ft. 0 in. on center. Leave a 3/8-in. space between covers and field cut with a fine tooth hacksaw where necessary.

Installers wear protective eyewear, and the protective film is removed immediately after installation where applicable.

Wind warranty

The 20-year, 120 mph Perma-Tite wind warranty runs for twenty years from the date of final acceptance. Metal-Era LLC replaces or repairs the portion of the coping or roof edge system that has failed because of a defect in Metal-Era supplied materials, and its obligation is limited to the owner's original cost of the system.

  • Perma-Tite Fascia Systems and Perma-Tite Coping Systems are the only warranted products.
  • All accessories must be manufactured by Metal-Era.
  • The owner gives Metal-Era written notice within thirty days of discovering a failure.
  • The warranty does not apply to wind damage above 120 mph, separation of the wood nailer substrate from the building, metal work not furnished by Metal-Era, or installation not in strict accordance with Metal-Era's specifications and printed installation instructions.

The Kynar 500 and anodized finish warranties are separate.
