Overview
Creative Design Bullnose Fascia is a roof-edge fascia from Metal-Era's Creative Design Series. Its cover has a rounded bullnose profile and hooks onto an extruded aluminum anchor bar that terminates the roof membrane at the edge. Covers are supplied in 4-ft. lengths with pre-punched, slotted fastening holes that allow thermal movement of the metal and set fastener placement and spacing.
Two versions are covered on this page. The single-ply version is made for fully adhered or mechanically attached single-ply roof systems. The built-up or modified version is made for BUR and modified bitumen roof systems. Both share the same cover profile, sizes, materials and 20-year, 120 MPH wind warranty option, and they differ mainly in how the membrane is dressed over the edge and how the anchor bar is sealed.
The fascia is one of the perimeter metal components that finish low-slope roof assemblies. The same Creative Design Series also includes Shadow Line and Cornice fascia, which are separate products.
Versions and face heights
Face heights run from 5 1/2 in. to 8 1/2 in. to suit multiple nailer arrangements. The single-ply version also comes in a 4-in. size, while the standard sizes are 5 1/2, 7 and 8 1/2 in.
- Single-ply version, product IDs BAF-55, BAF-70 and BAF-85: face heights of 5 1/2 in., 7 in. and 8 1/2 in., with a second dimension of 4 1/4 in., 5 3/4 in. and 7 1/4 in. respectively. Coverage is drawn for 2, 3 or 4 nailers.
- Built-up or modified version, product IDs BAFM-55, BAFM-70 and BAFM-85: the same face heights and second dimensions. Coverage is drawn for 1, 2 or 4 nailers, and the holes are pre-punched 1 in. down, centered in the first nailer.
Covers are supplied in 4-ft. lengths. The anchor bar is supplied in 12-ft. lengths and is field cut as needed. Support clips are 4 in. wide, formed from 20-gauge galvanized steel, and sit at 4 ft. on center.

Cover materials and finishes
Covers are offered in 22-gauge galvanized steel and .040-in. aluminum. The anchor bar is extruded aluminum.
For Creative Design Bullnose Fascia, standard colors are coil-coated and carry a 30-year Kynar 500 finish warranty. For Creative Design Bullnose Fascia, ten express colors are offered: Dark Bronze, Bone White, Cityscape, Almond, Medium Bronze, Sandstone, Sierra Tan, Slate Gray, Stone White and Clear Anodized. All colors are also available in mill finish.
- Custom post-coated Kynar 500 colors include a 10-year Kynar 500 finish warranty, and a 20-year warranty is available on request.
- Anodized finishes carry a 5-year warranty. Coil-anodized finishing has no warranty. Post-coat Class 1 batch anodizing is available with a 5-year warranty, with an option to increase it to 10 years for an upcharge.
Specially fabricated products are available for individual project needs.
Testing and approvals
The bullnose fascia is tested to ANSI/SPRI/FM 4435/ES-1. Both versions are FM Approved, and both carry an ANSI/SPRI ES-1 design pressure of 290 psf. The installation instructions for both versions carry the FM Approved 1-120 mark.
The Shadow Line and Cornice fascia in the same series have no ANSI/SPRI/FM 4435/ES-1 testing.
Anchor bar, splice plates and fasteners
The anchor bar secures the roof membrane at the edge. The cover then hooks onto it, so the cover itself is not face-fastened. When a roof is replaced, the anchor bar can be removed, cleaned and reinstalled without loss of strength or appearance. The non-penetrating design needs no stripping-in or heat welding.
- Anchor bar: extruded aluminum, supplied in 12-ft. lengths, fastened 12 in. on center through its slots with 2-in. stainless steel fasteners.
- Splice plates: EPDM splice plates are included, set under each end of a 12-ft. bar with a 1/2-in. gap between bars. On the built-up or modified version each splice plate has a sponge gasket that sits snug to the end of the anchor bar.
- Fasteners: all fasteners, with a driver bit for the miter fasteners, are furnished by Metal-Era.
- Sealant: the non-curing sealant is supplied by others.
The recommended driving tool is a 600 to 800 rpm electric drill with a depth-sensing nosepiece. Fasteners are not over-driven, because stripping can occur at high driver torque, and impact tools are not used.
Miters, endcaps and accessories
Miters are factory fabricated, so no field fabrication is needed. Outside 90-degree miters, inside 90-degree miters, right endcaps and left endcaps are made for both versions. Non-90-degree miters are covered by a separate print approval, number 11010-1103.
The Fascia Extender is a related accessory with lap joint and splice plate versions, available with or without an offset. The with-offset version has pre-slotted holes at 12 in. on center and includes a continuous 22-gauge galvanized cleat. Its materials are 24-gauge and 22-gauge galvanized steel and .040-in., .050-in. and .063-in. aluminum. The .050-in. and .063-in. aluminum versions are provided with 3 1/2-in. wide concealed splice plates because of material thickness.
For the lap joint version of the extender, miters are installed first. The continuous cleat is fastened 12 in. on center, true and level, and the drip edge of each extender hooks onto the cleat and is fastened at 12 in. on center. Panels are installed right to left as seen from the rooftop, with a 1-in. lap at each joint at the notch provided, and the protective film is removed immediately after installation.
Installation sequence for the built-up or modified version
The membrane is positioned over the edge and down the outside face, following the roofing membrane manufacturer's recommendations. The steps run in this order:
- Roof Membrane. A modified bitumen membrane runs over the roof edge and down the outside face, with an optional base sheet.
- Roof Edge. A sacrificial flashing strip is laid where the membrane manufacturer requires one, extending at least 8 in. onto the roof membrane and down the outside face of the wall, 1/2 in. beyond the wood nailer, with laps of at least 3 in. On built-up roofs, a bitumen envelope is placed over the ends of the plies, and the flashing strip is mopped in with Type III or IV asphalt.
- Miter and Scupper Anchor Bar (Preparation). Miters and spill-out scuppers are laid outside face down on the deck. The anchor bar is cleaned, then either a 3-in. wide, 1/4-in. thick band of mastic or a heavy 3/8-in. bead of non-curing sealant is applied to the back along its full length, depending on the roofing manufacturer's recommendations.
- Anchor Bar Splice Plates. Mastic or sealant is applied to each splice plate as in step 3.
- Miter Bar Installation. Miters are fastened with 2-in. stainless steel fasteners, with one splice plate under each end of the corner. Spill-outs and scuppers follow.
- Anchor Bar (Installation). 12-ft. sections are positioned over the splice plate and butted into the gasket.
- Support Clips. At miters the clips sit over the anchor bar 8 in. from the corner. On straight runs they sit at each end of a 12-ft. bar and at 4 ft. on center between.
- Miter Cover (Right Half). The right, tabbed half goes on first, with its face angled up for clearance past the support clip. It is rotated into place and engaged on the anchor bar with slight downward and inward pressure of the palm.
- Miter Cover (Left Half). The left half goes on the same way.
Installation sequence for the single-ply version
The first seven steps of the single-ply sequence are:
- Roof Membrane. The membrane is positioned over the roof edge and down the outside face of the wall, covering the treated wood nailers completely, with 1/2 in. of excess membrane. The outside edge of the treated wood nailers, minimum 2 x 4, is flush with or slightly past the outermost edge of the wall.
- Miter and Scupper Bar (Prep). A heavy 3/8-in. bead of non-curing sealant is applied at the right-angle intersection of the deck flange and the back of the anchor bar, along the full length of each miter anchor bar.
- Anchor Bar Splice Plates. Non-curing sealant is applied to each splice plate as in step 2.
- Miter Bar Installation. The membrane is folded at corners and miters are installed with 2-in. hex head stainless steel fasteners, with one splice plate under each end of the corner.
- Anchor Bar (Installation). 12-ft. sections with sealant are positioned over the splice plate, with a 1/2-in. space between bars and fasteners at 12 in. on center.
- Support Clips. Clips go over the anchor bar at the miter joint, then at 4 ft. on center.
- Miter Cover (Right Half). The tabbed half is installed first, hooked onto the anchor bar and rotated into place. The bottom of any cover not preceded by a lap joint is pulled down to engage the anchor bar.
Straight cover lengths follow the miter, lapping 1 in.
Wind warranty
The Creative Design Series 20-Year, 120 MPH Wind Warranty is available on orders to meet a project's specification. It covers repair or replacement of any portion of the roof edge system that has failed due to a defect in Metal-Era supplied materials, up to 20 years and 120 MPH. The finish warranties described above are separate.
