Overview
The CFR is a Metl-Span insulated metal roof panel with a concealed-clip, mechanically seamed standing seam. Metal faces enclose a foamed-in-place core. The panel is installed from the top side, with concealed clips and fasteners in the side joint.
It belongs to the Metl-Span range of standing seam roof panels for commercial and industrial buildings in the United States. It can be used on roof slopes as low as 1/2 inch in 12 inches. Separate data sheets exist for PIR-core and PUR-core versions.
Listed uses include coolers, freezers, food processing facilities and dry goods warehouses.
Materials and construction
The exterior face is G-90 galvanized or AZ-50 aluminum-zinc coated steel in 24 or 22 gauge, or AZ-55 aluminum-zinc coated steel with a clear acrylic coating in 24 gauge. The interior face, in 26, 24 or 22 gauge, is G-90 galvanized or AZ-50 aluminum-zinc coated steel.
The core is foamed in place, PIR or PUR, using zero ozone depleting (zero ODP) Class 1 foam.

Profile and dimensions
The exterior profile is a 2 inch high standing seam with an embossed Mesa profile between the seams. The interior profile is Mesa, nominally 1/8 inch deep, embossed or unembossed.
The exterior side joint is a concealed clip, mechanically seamed single lock standing seam. The interior side joint is a single tongue-and-groove interlock.
- Width: 36 inches or 42 inches.
- Thickness: 2, 2 1/2, 3, 4, 5 and 6 inches.
- Standard length: 9 feet 6 inches to 53 feet 0 inches, non-directional embossed. Longer lengths are available from Metl-Span.
Finishes and colors
The finish systems are Fluropon, Fluropon Premier, Fluropon Classic, Flurothane, Flurothane Coastal, WeatherXL and Igloo White Polyester. Colors are listed on a Metl-Span color chart, and they are approximate.
Color shift, shade variation, striations and longitudinal patterning can appear on metallic finishes and are inherent to them. The Light Stone color in Tuff Cote is not a match for Light Stone in Standard SP.
Exterior coating options are G-90 galvanized, AZ-50 aluminum-zinc, or AZ-55 aluminum-zinc with a clear acrylic coating. The clear acrylic coating applies to 24 gauge only.
Factory-prepared details
Panel ends are factory cut, notched and swaged. Factory-installed backer plates sit at the endlaps and remove pre-drilling for special fasteners. The vertical side seam reduces the number of side joints to seal.
A CFR roof seamer is offered for rental. The seam is closed mechanically on the roof, with the clips and fasteners placed in the side joint.
Thermal values
Values are for a 42 inch panel width. U-factor is in BTU/h-ft2-F and R-value in h-ft2-F/BTU. The PUR-core and PIR-core versions have separate values.
PIR core, at a 35 degree F mean temperature, from ASTM C518 and ASTM C1363 with simulation:
- 2 inches: U-factor 0.063, R-value 17.9.
- 2 1/2 inches: 0.051, 22.4.
- 3 inches: 0.043, 26.9.
- 4 inches: 0.033, 35.9.
- 5 inches: 0.026, 44.8.
- 6 inches: 0.022, 53.8.
PUR core, based on ASTM C518, ASTM C1363 and thermal modeling:
- 2 inches: U-factor 0.065, R-value 17.5.
- 2 1/2 inches: 0.052, 21.9.
- 3 inches: 0.044, 26.2.
- 4 inches: 0.033, 35.0.
- 5 inches: 0.027, 43.7.
- 6 inches: 0.022, 52.5.
Fire performance
The PIR-core panel reports these fire results.
- Surface burning under ASTM E84 gave flame spread below 25 and smoke developed below 450.
- ASTM E108: passed Class A.
- FM 4880: Class 1, product approved. Exterior wall use requires FM 4881.
- NFPA 286: the specimen met the criteria of IBC Section 803.1.2.1.
- CAN/ULC S102: meets the National Building Code of Canada requirements.
- CAN/ULC S107: passed Class A.
Uplift, structural and weather performance
Uplift performance is UL 90 rated, with FM Approvals Standard 4471 and State of Florida Product Approval.
- ASTM E72 and ASTM E1592: results in the load chart.
- FM 4471: Class 1 exterior roof structural performance, with an FM roof load chart.
- UL 580: UL Class 90 uplift at 5 feet and 7 feet.
- UL 1897: uplift resistance of 166 psf at 5 feet and 140 psf at 7 feet.
- ASTM E1680 air infiltration: under 0.017 cfm/ft2 at 15 psf.
- ASTM E1646 water penetration: no uncontrolled leakage at 15 psf.
- FM 4471 Appendix G and ASTM E2140: no leakage after a multi-panel assembly was subjected to a 6 inch static water head.
Load data, specification and details
The load span tables are based on Allowable Stress Design (ASD). Section 2.4.1 of ASCE 7-10 covers the ASD load combinations for ASCE 7-10 (LRFD) loads. FM Global requirements are on a separate page. The MasterFormat 2012 guide specification section is 07 42 13.19.
Published load charts cover the USA, Canada and snow loads. A Notice of Acceptance testing document is published for the CFR panels.
Published detail sets include the CFR Complete Detail Book, horizontal commercial and industrial details (base, corner, eave and soffit, window, joint) and the vertical C&I CF Detail Book. Named components include the V6 X-Span Clip and V6 X-Span Edge Trim.
