Overview
Menzies Multi-Flash Insulated Pipe Flashing is an aluminum flashing for plumbing pipes that pass through a roof, sold by Portals Plus under the Menzies name. A single flashing fits plumbing pipe sizes 1 1/4 in. (32 mm), 1 1/2 in. (38 mm), 2 in. (51 mm), 3 in. (76 mm) and 4 in. (102 mm), so one unit covers the whole range without measuring or stocking several sizes. Each version has a 4 in. (102 mm) roof flange.
The product comes in three versions: Pitched, Spun and Spun TPO. Pitched is made for a pitched roof, and the two spun versions are made for a flat roof. All three are listed to meet Canadian and U.S. standards by QAI and meet CSA B272 and IAPMO PS 64.
The flashing is one of the penetration flashings used where a pipe leaves a membrane or metal roof, including the assemblies covered under flat roofing systems. The flange is secured to the roof deck and then flashed with the roofing membrane.
Pitched, Spun and Spun TPO versions
The three versions share the pipe range and the 4 in. (102 mm) flange. They differ in roof type, construction, coating and part number.
- Pitched: for a pitched roof. A heavy aluminum extruded tube is welded to the flange. Easy tear-out plugs on the top seal fit the pipe size. The roof pitch must be specified when ordering. Part number 400-4340P, size 1 1/4 in. to 4 in.
- Spun: for a flat roof. One-piece aluminum with an 8 in. (203 mm) water height. The top and bottom seals both have tear-out plugs. Part number 400-4340, fitting 1 1/4 in., 1 1/2 in., 2 in., 3 in. and 4 in. pipe. It is also available in TPO Direct Weld.
- Spun TPO: the Spun flashing with a TPO coating, for a flat roof. One-piece aluminum with an 8 in. (203 mm) water height and tear-out plugs in the top and bottom seals. Part number 400-4340TPO, size 1 1/4 in. to 4 in., weight 1.80 lbs.
The flashing is custom ordered by roof pitch. Pitch up to 3/12 is treated as a flat roof and pitch over 3/12 as a steep roof.

Moisture seals and condensation control
The spun versions carry a moisture seal at the top and another at the bottom of the flashing. Together the two seals create a dead air space around the pipe, and that air space acts as the insulator that prevents condensation. The Pitched version has a top seal only, and its bottom seal is left out.
Each seal has tear lines for the pipe sizes the flashing accepts. The tear-outs are marked for these pipes:
- 1 1/4 in. plastic and 1 1/2 in. copper
- 1 1/2 in. plastic and 2 in. copper
- 2 in. plastic
- 3 in. plastic
- 4 in. plastic
The Spun TPO flashing has a 5.06 in. I.D. stack and a 5 in 1 cap that is UV resistant. The Spun TPO drawing is dated 05/19/16 and is numbered Multi-Flash Pipe Flashing Spun TPO ZV.
Materials and construction
The body of every version is aluminum. The spun versions are formed as a single piece of spun aluminum with a 4 in. base flange and an 8 in. water height. The Pitched version is built differently: a heavy extruded aluminum tube is welded to the flange.
The Spun TPO version has an aluminum body with a TPO coating, made for a flat roof application. The Spun version is also offered in TPO Direct Weld. The Spun TPO flashing weighs 1.80 lbs.
Standards and listings
The flashing in all three versions is listed to meet Canadian and U.S. standards by QAI and meets CSA B272 and IAPMO PS 64. CSA B272 and IAPMO PS 64 are also among the Spun TPO drawing's features.
The QAI listing document in the product resources, Listing No. P325-2 (Report No. P325-2 Edition 5, last revised August 14, 2018), is issued to Menzies Enterprises, Ltd. in the Roof and Floor Drains class under ASME A112.6.3, ASME A112.6.4 and CSA B79. Its model tables are Menzies drains, scuppers and drain seals, and the Multi-Flash model numbers 400-4340, 400-4340P and 400-4340TPO are not among them.
Installation steps
Installation differs for flat and steep roofs. The flashing is custom ordered by roof pitch.
Installation for pitch up to 3/12 (flat roof)
- Clean and prepare the roof and pipe surfaces. Remove debris or materials that may prevent the pipe-flashing flange from laying flush on the deck.
- Bottom moisture seal (5 sizes): match the pipe size with the correct cutout on the bottom seal. Do not use a sharp instrument to pierce or cut the seal. Break the seal with a blunt object, such as a car key or ballpoint pen, and tear the material out by hand.
- Slide the bottom seal down the pipe so that the seal is flush with the roof deck.
- Center the aluminum flashing over the bottom moisture seal.
- Prepare the top moisture seal to fit the pipe: match the pipe size to the tear line and peel the material away as in step 2.
- Slide the top moisture seal down the pipe to the aluminum flashing.
- Force the top moisture seal over the bead located at the top of the flashing.
- Secure the aluminum flashing flange to the roof deck using a minimum of 3 round head fasteners screwed into a solid substrate. Fastening evenly spaced, 1 in. from the edge of the flange, is optimal.
- Flash the aluminum flange with the roofing membrane, following the membrane manufacturer's instructions.
- Adhere to installation requirements as determined by the regulatory authorities for the region.
Installation for pitch over 3/12 (steep roof)
- Follow steps 1 to 9 above. There is no bottom seal on a pitched flashing.
- Adhere to installation requirements as determined by the regulatory authorities for the region.
Ordering and part numbers
Each version has one part number that covers the full 1 1/4 in. to 4 in. pipe range:
- 400-4340P: Pitched, 1 1/4 in. to 4 in.
- 400-4340: Spun, fits 1 1/4 in., 1 1/2 in., 2 in., 3 in. and 4 in.
- 400-4340TPO: Spun TPO, 1 1/4 in. to 4 in., 1.80 lbs.
The roof pitch must be specified when ordering the Pitched version. Because a single flashing fits every listed pipe size, a pipe size does not have to be chosen at the time of ordering. The size is set on site by tearing out the matching plug in the seal.
